Getting over Shingles by Kerry-Lou

  • This video is about my personal experience with Shingles. The Shingles virus effects one out of three people over 60 years old, and many younger people also. Since a lot of my followers are over 50, I wanted to share this cautionary story, hoping that it may save some people from going through this unpleasant experience.
About five months previous to my getting Shingles, my doctor suggested that I have a Shingles vaccination, which I heard is 95% effective now, (The previous vaccination is 50% effective). Oh, how I wish that I had taken her advice!
I was diagnosed with Shingles within 48 hours, and started treatment with an oral anti-viral medication, and a topical anti-viral cream. The rash was still very uncomfortable, but would have been a lot worse left untreated.
The first symptom for me, was a circular, red rash on the inside of my arm, with quickly spread down my arm. The rash turns into nasty yellowish blisters. Watch the video to find out more.
FTC - Not sponsored - I am not sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. I recommend that you do your own research, and consult your doctor to find out what treatment is best for you, or if you should have a vaccination.

Thank you for the heads-up on this important health issue. I've known several people who have suffered with this condition and most of them were over the age of 70. I am now 60 and will get the vaccination from my doctor asap! For those who don't know....shingles is contagious. Very glad you got treatment and are now on the mend. :)

I just got the shingles in Jan of this year. I turn 60 in Sept. I went through the treatment regimen. I am taking 75 mg of Lyrica 2x a day but starting tomorrow night before bed, my MD said ok to drop to 75 mg 1x day before bed and will stop taking it completely within 2 wks. Because of lightheadedness and dizziness is the reason I want to come off Lyrica. My shingles pain is getting less and less now. Hopefully, within 2 weeks, the pain will be done for good. Almost 4 months of dealing with it. Also, shingles is only contagious if the person has not had chicken pox. Also, you cannot get chickenpox from the shingles as well. The newest shingles vax is only effective for about 4-5 years then after that time, then the effective rate drops dramatically plus the side effects of the vax are almost as bad as getting the shingles itself so I decided I will take my chances. Hopefully, I won't get it again. If I do, I know what to expect and how to get treatment for it.

Cindi Barber I have a friend who was diagnosed nearly two years ago. Covered a large portion of the torso. Could not tolerate clothing, moving, bathing, just the stirring of air across the skin painfully sickening. Left with neuralgia still. If you did have the chicken pox before, no price for the vaccine is too high to prevent or mitigate this suffering. Of course, your own decision is what's best for you. Best wishes 👵🏻

I had Chicken Pox as a child, as well as cold sores, which appear 1-2 times a year. Diagnosed with Cohn's (autoimmune) in late 40's, so cold sores frequency tripled soon after. My mother noticed the cold sores and nagged at me to get the Shingles vaccine, but she didn't have to nag much since it made sense that it was just a matter of time.
If someone's in the US and has insurance, just ask your pharmacist assistant if insurance covers you. They'll call you back in 1-2 days, and make an appt for the Pharmacist to jab you. Such a relief, a teeny jab saves so much pain.

After watching this video I immediately got onto a waiting list at my medical clinic to get the vaccine. We are the same age so reality really sunk in here. I received my first vaccine in March and the booster in May....DONE. The side effects of both shots were a bit to deal with so I planned accordingly so that I didn't have any other plans or appointments during that time. After each shot I experienced a fever, body aches and chills. These are the most common reactions that I was told were the body's normal reaction. After 24-36 hours all of these symptoms were gone. I used OTC ibuprofen to help alleviate the fever and aches which helped quite a bit. I appreciate this video so much Kerry-Lou. :-)

it concerns me to hear there may be side effects from the shots?

    • @helpfulnatural
      @helpfulnatural Před 4 lety

@@joanvanniekerk3678 Yes, the side effects are your body's response to the vaccine. ie: building antibodies. Everyone's side effects are different as to the severity. Some people don't have any. When I received the vaccine, I was told these were all a normal response. For me it felt like I had the flu but without all the sinus or stomach symptoms. It was just a fever, chills, and some muscle aches which came on about 8 hours after the shots. Day 2 was lesser than day 1, and day 3 they were gone. Be sure to tell your Dr. about any allergies or drug interactions you may have before getting the vaccine. Of course this is true with any vaccine, not just shingles. I'm so glad I got it done, especially now during the pandemic.

I got shingles on the right side of my face a few years ago when I was 31. I was going through a very stressful time and started getting what felt like the worst migraines of my life. The paid would just not stop. Then it started feeling like I had glass shards under my skin on my eyelids and forehead. Doctors kept turning me away saying it was nothing. Finally, about a week later, my mother (who was a nurse) came with me to an appointment and said that I clearly have shingles. The doctor took a better look and said "Take her to emergency IMMEDIATELY" - I got whisked in and given heavy heavy painkillers and was told I could have gone blind had I not seen them in time. I had the worst experience, full-on sores on my face, right eye so swollen I couldn't see. It lasted two weeks and I still have neuralgia in that area to this day. I guess I'm here to say that it's not as common, but younger people CAN get shingles and it's one of the most painful things I have ever experienced.

I have exactly what you've described. Went to ER for headaches, sooo painful. I was accused of just wanting pain pills. I showed them my full bottle of Vicodin, a monthly med from my pain Dr. They did absolutely nothing for the pain. Why didn't they know it's the first symptom of Shingles?? 😢 I've had it for 2 1/2 months. Guess virus is gone, but still have residual pain. Because Drs didn't know what it was, I didn't get the anti virus meds early enough. My general Dr asked them to admit me to the hospital. Had shots in my stomach, 8 different drops in my eyes 5 times a day. They thought I might loose the vision in my eye, too. After my release I went to 3 eye Drs & they all told me something different. As did the 4 derm. drs. But they all said, "wow, you've really got this bad"! Who wants to hear that? 😕 All because I wasn't diagnosed in time. I'm still miserable, but for for, not as bad. My eye was so bad, I couldn't handle any light source. Even the cell phone on lowest setting. Stayed in my room for a month with no lights on. I'm 68 with stage 4 COPD. Didn't need anything else. I've never agreed with vaccinations. But, please get yours for Shingles!!! I will, when they say that I can!!! ☮️

It lasted around 3 months. I was stressed because I had just lost my only child a son a few months prior. Strong pain was developing in my right are real bad, but fortunately the medicine stopped it from developing there. I took extra b vitamins, my own idea because this inflammation is on nerve endings. Shingles is only contagious to those who have not had chickenpox. Just responding to someone who left a comment! Kerry could you please share with me the topical cream the doctor gave you. I am going through a bout of Shingles and the ER doctor said there was nothing topical and this is so painful. Thank you for sharing your Storying because I feel so alone in this battle. Mine hit my left backside and down the back of my left leg. I have been unable to sit for over four weeks. I have had to stand to eat and walk around to let it digest and then lay in pain. My skin feels like a have a bad sunburn. I am afraid of the long term nerve damage because of the severity of mine.

I had Chicken Pox as a child. My Mom had a really bad case of shingles around her abdomen and took forever to go away. So when I turned 60 I got the first shingles vaccine and had a bad reaction to it. When I turned 65 last year my doctor recommended the newest vaccine which was a two part shot, get one shot then 2 months later get the other one. Same thing happened - had a painful reaction to both shots, not as bad as the first vaccine though. Hopefully after going through those vaccinations I won’t develop shingles! I hope! I couldn’t even wear my clothes because it was around my waist band front to middle of my back. I had large fluid filled blisters all around an they were painful rubbing against my loose pjs. I don’t remember being stressed either. Took a long time to heat...my pjs bursted some of the blisters and I got new outbreak where the fluid ran. Mine were really painful.

I had the first shot way back when; then I had the 2-shot regimen at the end of last year ("new"), and not 3 months later I have shingles (on my face.....gnarly-looking). I'm one of the unfortunate few to have had the shots but still get shingles. On the other hand, how much worse would it have been if I hadn't had the shots? If you have unexplained scaliness (mine was never red bumps) or pain in weird places (mine was beside and above my ear; and on my cheek and eyelid), get thee to a doc. Shingles typically attacks only one quadrant of the body; I got mine on the R side of my face. Please don't tarry; get those shots. If you've got something scaly/itchy going on or have unexplained pain (like you bumped your head), go! mb

Hi Kerry Lou. Never heard this attacks people over 60. I just became 60 this January and I had it many many years ago. The first thing my doctor asked me was if I had animals in the house. When I said I had cats he said to look no further. As I remember it he told me you always get it from animals. In Belgium where I live it is called “ringworm” although it had nothing to do with a worm. Hope you get well soon xxx

    • @Love-mk8vh
      @Love-mk8vh Před 5 lety +2

scotosha It appears you are confusing shingles and the chicken pox virus with ringworm. Your doctor was obviously speaking about ringworm, not shingles. Ringworm is not a virus. It is a fungal infection that humans can contract from animals, including cats.
Shingles, on the other hand, results from having the chicken pox virus in one’s system. Cats do not get the chicken pox virus; therefore, humans cannot contract chicken pox or shingles from cats!!
As for ringworm, it is a fungal infection, not a virus!! There are skin conditions such as granuloma annulare that can look similar to ringworm.

    Warning, shingles horror story,
I was on dialysis and 5 years ago I was also on a small dose of prednisone, steroids. This was shortly after my kidney transplant failed so was still tapering off the steroids. Was 48 at the time, and working full time as I could dialyise overnight on my machine. I started to get this really bad itch mid-back, under shoulder blade. This prodromal stage, not that I knew it at the time, went for months. The itch slowly spread across my back, around under my arm and to top of abdomen. I used to use a dry raspy towel to scratch it. My doctor didn't know what it was.
One morning, I was rubbing the dry towel under my chest and it suddenly ripped up the skin. Immense pain, and then the rash appeared almost suddenly, from midline to spine.
I went to ER, got admitted straight away to a solitary, pressurised room and put on IV valacyclovir. The rash was two dermatomes wide, about 7 centimetres, and wall to wall blisters, no spare skin.
It eventually caused encephalitis and madness, had a straight jacket tucked away in the room, I noticed.
Eventually, long after the rash cleared, I recovered but I still have occasions of itchiness on the back, pain in the front - post herpetic neuralgia, or nerve damage.
Luckily, was in a pretty good hospital in Australia, good care, but this thing can be life threatening.

It started with a horrible lower back pain, next day spots showed up about 1 inch above my tailbone most of my left bum cheek and on the outside and inside of my lady parts. And a little tail that went down the back of my left leg stopped at about my knee. Went to Dr got the antiviral med The doctor said use cold compress and anti itch creams is all they can do. Im telling you I about went out of my mind with the relentless pain. As of the the 2nd of this month I’m so much better still dealing with nerve pain but it’s doable. Im still extremely tired but I guess not being able to sleep all last month it’s not a surprise. Im immune compromised so I guess that put me in the 10%. Get your shots if you haven’t you do not want to experience this. As far as getting shingles where I did it’s unusual my shingles just chose this particular nerve.

Hi Kerry-Lou I just watched this video today and was so pleased you raised the issue of shingles. I got shingles in 2016, it started as a blister above my eye. I went to the hospital emergency dept and was told it was a pulled hair follicle. I felt generally unwell, tired etc. it appeared to be getting worse and spreading down towards my eye. I went back to the hospital emergency dept and was told the same thing pulled hair follicle and it would take time for the anti-biotic cream to work. A few days later whilst holidaying with family I knew that this was serious and I needed another opinion. I visited another doctor and was immediately diagnosed with shingles. Luckily I received anti viral treatment immediately (it actually saved my eye). I have a permanent scar just near my eyebrow. Its so important to raise awareness of shingles for people over 60 (I was 56) so don't wait get treated immediately and consider vaccination.

Thanks for telling about your experience Karen! I have heard time and time again about mis-diagnosis of Shingles. My first sore was so small, then another popped up overnight, and I just went to a walk in doctors group. After one quick look at it, he said "it's Shingles" thank goodness for the quick diagnosis and medication! I can see why people just thin it's an insect bite, or something though. All the best!

I am 81 years old, I am starting on my 4th month, the blisters are gone but the blotches of skin from breast bone to my spine is still there, very painful to the touch and the shooting nerve pain is almost unbearable at times, nothing seems to help. Under my right arm is the worse. The meds have given me Gabertine which caused swelling in my feet and raised my Blood press also tried Duloxtine, makes you feel like you have the flu. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Bernard, I am so sorry to hear about this terrible experience you’re having. I wish I could help you, but I’m not a medical professional. My hope was with this video, to get people to get the vaccination for prevention. When I had shingles, I really knew nothing about it in spite of so many people suffering with it. Thank you so much for sharing your story, and maybe it will encourage people to get the vaccination. And I do hope whenever people see some kind of odd sore on their body, they will get it checked out immediately. It’s very easy to overlook the first signs. I wish you all the very best, and sending healing energy your way! 🌸💕

Got my shingles vaccine a few days after my 60th birthday. BTW: Very easy shot to take. I've seen too many people get shingles and have a hard time with it. So I was ready!

I asked my doctor for the Vaccine and he said they do not give the vaccine until age 60. I have 3 more years before I can get it. Ugh!!😢

Really? I wonder if they mean that it's not covered until you're 60. I guess it varies depending on where you live. My husband got his in CVS the drugstore and it cost about $180. He is 65 years old.

Check with your pharmacy which is where I had to receive mine, for some reason my doctor's office could not get a hold of the vaccine. Also call your insurance carrier to make sure it's covered if administered at the pharmacy rather than at a Dr's office. Hope this helps. :)
