  • THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOR TIV PALACE , GBOKO 1946-2021
    TOR TIV WITHOUT PALACE
The man who got the previllege to be made the first Tor Tiv was HRH Makir Dzakpe of Mbaduku, Vandeikya Local Government . Dzakpe was a World War 2 veteran who after the war had returned to Gboko in the 1940s and joined the colonial government prison services.
He, like most of the emerging Tiv elites of his time , settled mostly in the Gboko Central Area . Some of his neighbors were Malam Shaka, Ajai Kume, Dan Magena , Gberikon Ahenjir, Wayo Byua , Manta Abela , Garba Angyundu , Agbende Ikima , Ayua Yeke, Kpojime Nyamor , Akaahan Agbo Kpire, Ugoo Uyough , Nyianshima Nundu , Uganden Akaazua and others .
So naturally, what could be regarded as the first interim Tor Tiv Palace was the residence of Dzakpe which today is located on No 2 Tafawa Balewa Street, Gboko Central. This was so because, there was no Palace for the King prior to this . His house was a very simple and humble abode roofed with "acho" , an impproved version of spear grass, that others commonly used in and around Gboko . He lived here with his many wives and children . He was on the throne from 1946 till 1956 when he died .
    AN ITALIAN MODEL EMERGED
Apart from ruling his people , the first Tor Tiv had to supervise the building of a befitting palace for the throne . He applied and got funds from the Government of the Northern Region for the building of the Tor Tiv Palace a few years after his installation in the 1950s.
In 1953, a young Italian by name Mr Antonio Giovanni Ferrero, arrived Nigeria and registered his company, AG Ferrero and Company on 10th January, 1953 and established his headquarters in Kano.
According to Wekipedia , the city of design and fashion in Europe, Milan, saw an architecture of excellence in the 1950s with unique architects like Giovanni Muzio, Piero Portaluppi, Gualtiero Galmanini, Luigi Pollastri, Gio Ponti, Giannino Castiglioni. One of these might have influenced Ferrero when he arrived Africa and began building landmark buildings, especially in Northern Nigeria.
Eventually, it will be AG Ferrero and Company that would build the Tor Tiv Palace and other significant buildings in Gboko. The building of the Tor Tiv Palace was most likely to have started in late 1953 or early 1954 and was completed in 1956. Other signature buildings along this Italian model in Gboko included The Police Post, The Post office , Area Court and Ministry of Works offices that still stand today close to the Tor Tiv Palace . The outstanding feature of AG Ferrero and Company's structures was that all top of their buildings were decked .
Although he supervised the building of this palace, Makir Dzakpe did not have the honour to occupy it . On his death in October , 1956, Gboko and Tivland wept not just because they had lost a king, but it was also painful that he could not occupy the magnificent building he had dutifully built .
    THE FIRST PALACE
The palace had six blocks which were divided into the Tor Tiv office, the Secretariat and security offices , a Boys Quarters, a Girls Quarters , a Kitchen , Banquet Hall and the Tor Tiv lodge . Close by these buildings was also the library.
On his appointment in 1956, Gondu Aluor became the first Tor Tiv to occupy the palace. He was there till 1978 when he died . From 1978 to 1990, the Third Tor Tiv , James Akperan Orshi also occupied the palace .
    THE RENOVATIONS
On his selection and installation in 1991, the fourth Tor Tiv, Alfred Akawe Torkula who was on the throne from 1991- 2015, became the first Tor Tiv to carry out minor renovations and an addition on the palace that was first completed in 1956 by the Italians.
This was actually under the military administration of Lt Col. Fedelis Makka. Torkula, when he was selected and installed, it is learnt, "refused" from the beginning as a mark of honour that he was not occupying the same lodge that Aluor and Orshi, his predecessors had occupied. Subsequently, a new flat was specifically built for him. This became the first addition in the palace .
Other renovations that were further carried on during the long and eventful reign of Torkula were the covering of the deckings with roofing sheets to prevent leakages .
    AN AMBITIOUS SECOND PALACE
When Torkula died , the adminstration of Samuel Ortom, decided to break down the then 60 year old palace (1956-2016) that was built under the colonial government and surpervised by the first Tor Tiv, Makir Dzakpe and in its place build a modern and befitting palace for the Tor Tiv.
On his installation in 2016, the fifth Tor Tiv, HRM Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse, was moved to the Benue State Guest House, Gboko that was primarily upgraded to house him to allow work go on the new palace.
Now the Palace is completed and the King Is Enjoying a beautiful Palace.
