I Remember being here Jamaica Armory 1979 as a High School Senior!!!! These were the Golden Days if Rap.. Starsky on the Wheels Hollywood N Cheeba on the Mic.. Old School Forever!!!!
The N. Bronx. movement been in effect from the start. Ask Kool Herc!!! The Valley Crew all day. Big up to Timmy Hall, KBJ and the Come Off Crew... Big up to T Ski Valley(Grand Groove). big up to Raheim, Big up to Haffin Park!!! Big up to DJ Break Out from Boston Rd. Sha Rock from Edenwald PJs, Kool Kyle Star Child reppn Gun Hill Projects. The Dominant Force Crew(DFC), Hypnotizing 5(House Crew), Famous, MCs, A Touch of Class, Chief Rocking MCs, The Stardust, T Connection, The Lay ups(5 train).
In my opinion, DJ Hollywood of the 371 Club in the Bronx was and is the top DJ and dance maker that I've ever partied to. The man gets you on the floor and takes you through a spin that keeps you dancing all night. The "Original DJ Hollywood" and no one can replace him!
I lived two blocks from the Armory !!! I remember all these shows not because i was there but my brother Ricky was! I could hear the music from outside but i was 14 and couldn't get in !
DJ Hollywood, a true pioneer of hip-hop. Underrated and unheralded, here is one of the true legends of the seminal days of hip-hop. Remember Club 371 in the Bronx? As DJ Hollywood once told me after I remarked there was no one to put on a show that nite at Club 371, "I am the show!" Keep Bangin!!!
Merci DutchOldSchoolFan for the upload! And thank all y'all True School pioneers for the stories y'all sharing here. I'm 41 and feel like a young boi standing by the door in in my pajamas looking throught the door, listening to you guys kick knowledge at a house jam!
This is my first favorite event for original hip hop music I was in 40 projects on this day because I was NOT old enough to be there. DJ cocaine 🦂 university and 176 Kool Herc gallesy 2000 get busy
peace to everyone watching the Netflix series history of hip-hop which is one of the best done series I've seen done in a minute on this. topic since Scratch. peace to all the old cats who commented 8 years ago on this classic piece. peace to all the 30 something year olds like myself who stay talking about I miss the 90s cuz it was so good, but still take the time to go back and find the inspirations and innovators to this artform. peace to anyone who has stumbled across these amazing cats who paved the way. to the young cats who want to know where this all came from, do your homework. wherever you at, go further back. it will be worth it. From Pigmeat to shit's Street true saying nothing meep meep... appreciate the evolution
Just wanted to add my crew to the list. DEATHMASTERS from southside queens ny. we started in 1976 and actually battled the original disco twins and cipher sounds back in the day. we wore RED AND BLACK and our symbol was like the hells angels but with batwings instead if angels wings. we still have crews in new london conn, waterford conn and hartford till this day continueing the old school sounds!
@XConYoungBlood i remember eddie cheba, he is the one that inspired me to start my own crew back in the day. and then we acually had a battle with like seven crews at club FANTASIA in queens new york. we are still carrying on the old school tradition with crews in hartford, waterford and new london conn. hip hop u dont stop.
It’s important to say that the sugarhill gang dogged their entire shit, because thats what they were told to do. Hiphop started spreading like wildfire in the 70s the same way punk rock did- it was just anti radio/ antiestablishment shit. The woman behind putting the sugar hill gang TRIED to get some MCs from new york proper, but none of them wanted to bastardize their art, so she got three kids from new jersey who didn’t know any better to do it. You can dissect every line of rapper’s delight and find it’s from somebody else. Every single line.
Just to add to the list. Cipher of sounds ,the original not this one who is out now, Disco twins, mean machine ,mercedes ladies. Alpaca sweaters, kangol hats, british walkers, paris nylons, nameplates and house medallions.
@mrbeeonline Waddup yo man to your recollection when did British Walkers hit I remember them like about 80-81 I think. I was 15-16 back then,if you was at these jams then you older than me. I was 13 in 78' I remember Cortefiels, Gabardines, baseball shirts,Robert Klein sweaters with the v pattern on the chest, Alpacas Blythe sweaters, British Walkers, Playboys, shark skins and all that but exactly when did British Walkers hit?
@moshua947 I was with a crew called DEATHMASTERS and i actually still have a flyer with disco sounds on it. I wonder if youre the same crew. We were both on the same flyer. get at me if this is the same crew
Well it the beat belongs to neither. Its a sample. Dj Hollywood would rap at a Disco but wasnt considered a part of Hip hop at the time. The beat is from the disco "Good Times". However, "Big Bank Hank" Jackson did steal much of his lyrics from a great MC at the time called Grandmaster Caz
Hank didn't "steal" the lyrics per se! He used them with Caz's blessing but did not credit Caz or pay him for his lyrics on the back end. To say Hank stole the lyrics implies that he did so without Caz's knowledge. Hank was the manager for Caz when he was approached by Sugar Hill Records (Sylvia Robinson) to be part of a group to make a Rap record. Caz though at the least Hank would look out and put him on, but Hank never looked back.
