Roberta Flack introduced me to this song many years ago and I have never ceased to love it. Now, at age 74, it causes my heart to seize with something unspeakable when listening to Josh Groban sing it. I look across the hall at the man I married in April of 1968 and want to hold him in my heart and arms for all eternity. It also tempers the tears I have today as the Corona virus steals lovers from each other all over the world. It is beauty like this song and this singer that helps us endure. Thank you, Mr. Groban.

I sang this version at my best friends funeral last week…we’re both 53, friends from birth, cancer was too vicious, he fought bravely for 5 years before crossing over, and this was also the song playing as he died when I was holding his hand….it destroyed me, but he wanted it played during his funeral, and asked me to sing it (I use to be semi-professional)…..it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. It’s so hard singing this touching song, when you’re literally crying the entire time…but I somehow made it all the way through, until the last note, when I just couldn’t hold back, and fell to pieces in front of everyone.he was the brother I never had, and loved him so deeply, it feels like my heart will never mend😰😰😰😰😰

Love this rendition of a classic song by Roberta Flack.
Roberta Flack's cover is the standard everyone remembers, but the song was recorded earlier by Bonnie Dobson, the Kingston Trio, Peter Paul & Mary, the Brothers Four, Joe and Eddie, the Chad Mitchell Trio, and Gordon Lightfoot.
It was written by Ewan MacColl, who said the only version he liked was by Peggy Seeger, who sang it in clubs in the late 1950s. He said he wrote it for her, and all the remakes were terrible.
Flack's version strips away the folk sound and substitutes sensuality that really fits the lyrics. She was inspired by the Joe and Eddie version.

This song was written by Ewen McColl, a Scottish folk singer famous in the 1960s. He wrote it for his girlfriend, Peggy Seeger. According to the legend, while on tour, Ewen McColl called Peggy from a public phone box, sand this song to her, and then asked her to marry him. Best engagement gift ever!
I recommend also listening to Nana Mouskouri’s haunting version, which is closer to McColl’s original melody.
