They actually played this for the first year or so after Gowan joined, acoustic :) been quite a number of years since it's been played on stage! Also, they even played Babe with Gowan at one show only way back in 2000! But never again since.
fantastic! I understand that it's in the setlist because this was a #1 song in Canada......HOWEVER, this is actually the one song that I think this version of Styx should have in their setlist every night. I dont mind them leaving off some other DDY hits, but this song is one I would love to see them play everywhere.
I think now that Terry and Will are in the band, they have the vocal power necessary to pull it off again. Seems like JY is not keen on singing the high notes anymore.
I don't give a flying f what anyone thinks. Gowan and the boys sound AWESOME playing this song. He brings his own unique energy and it sounds perfect. Just like every other DDY song. Enough of the negativity. Styx is still Styx. 💯🙌
hey mister styx is a legal term. and the over whelming majority of styx fans want deyoung back for one last tour. gowan does a disservice to all of deyoungs songs.
@@pepperdog2039 There's no doubt many fans would like to see DDY back, and I'm sure nearly everyone wants a tour/some performances so he can perform those songs as only he can. That said, these decisions are out of our hands; to hear BOTs and all the others live from at least three of the original musicians(depending on the night)is a gift given all of the things that can and have happened to all the people who have been in this band. Rock on!
Lawrence Gowan didn’t saying the best of times the last time I went to see Styx at art Park Lewiston.ny last year on June 2 I can’t wait to listen to that when I go to the Budweiser stage next month on June 14, the best of times is a reunited song
Ive heard a few times in social media now that the third guitarist (the one who's not JY or Tommy) is Tommy's long time lover. Rumor,, I'm sure , but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Lawrence Gowan really like doing Mr. Roboto, had been knocking his bandmates doors for years to do it, and damn he really owned the song when they performed it live. Look at the audience reaction. Now "The Best of Times". This is a love song, one of the signature Dennis's ballad beside Babe. I don't think Lawrence yet to find his place performing this song in the video above. Dennis soulful melodic voice in this ballad is hard to redo actually. Time will bring him of course, to make him sing this song as his own, I don't mind a bit harder/upbeat version than the original ballad.
Must be sad to have nothing to do but cry about a past that cannot and won't be changed. Sounds like you need to go onto another band. Chicago maybe? No... they're bigger posers... mmm.... I dunno. Not many bands haven't changed members anymore. Guess you may have to go to reading.
Now all of a sudden, according to Tommy in a very recent, recent interview now says this is a brilliant song. The contradictory statements are too funny from these guys. And obviously, they now love Mr. Roboto. Dennis, JY & Tommy all had a share in that song from the playing to the mixing. But JY & Tommy hate it and they'll never ever do another concept album (But wait, 2017 comes and what do they do?). They hate it, they hate Dennis, they hate ballads. But they're up there every night playing Dennis penned tunes and earning money from Dennis penned tunes. Hypocritical. The war between Dennis, JY & Shaw continues and will never end until they're all gone. But, maybe it'll continue as they swipe barbs with each other wherever they all wind up at in the afterlife.
@@TomPate-hm7ci They are playing "his" songs, not "theirs" as far as who penned them in the first place. As a group, yes they played them and continue to play them to this day all the while continuing to bash Dennis and blame Dennis, I guess, for everything that went wrong with the group back then.
I've never heard them sound more like a cover band . The harmonies just don't sound like Styx anymore.. I think Larry did a decent job on the lead vocals.
This isn't a fair song for that assessment. On the studio track the lead AND BOTH HARMONIES are sung by Dennis. They kept his harmonies from the demo on the final track, so JY and Tommt never sang on it to begin with.
@pepperdog2039 It's both, thanks. I am well aware of Styx's recording history. The only vocal Tommy recorded for the track was the "tonight, tonight" line in the vocader.
According to Dennis DeYoung, both guitarists were on vacation when Babe was recorded originally. Tommy added the bridge and guitar solo for babe. The whole band sang on the best of times
@@b67y8y I'm Canadian and fully aware of Gowans solo career. IMO it's not Styx without DDY. Styx would not exist without DDY. Tommy had a huge impact on Styx and helped their success but without DDY , Styx would not have existed.
Again, again and once again, this sounds like garbage; a cheap imposter trying to replicate a classic tune written by one of the most talented songwriters, with a phenomenal voice. It’s amazing the hypocrisy of Tommy Shaw, he publicly ridicules this particular Dennis DeYoung penned song, yet he has no problem having this cabaret reject vocalist Larry Gowan butcher this gem in concert.
You nailed it Larry❤
Lawrence is so so talented, but I still miss the original sound with DDY! 😪
It's allowed. ;)
I do too, and am happy this song is being played live and with love and care!
💯 agree 👊
Thanks for recording/posting this Rick - not sure this will make it into the summer tour, and this is my all time #1 favorite Styx song.
I can't remember when they have ever played this one with Lawrence! Thank you for the post, 🙏

The best of times...like when Dennis DeYoung sang this song, LIVE, with Styx.

yes we love this from canada just beautiful thank you Gowan and styx
"our memories of yesterday" when the rightful singer of this band sang this song.

It’s not bad. But Dennis is soooo good. Just not the same
They havent played this since what 96?
2000... but only in accoustic. They may have done it in 1999 just before DDY stopped... but I'm unsure.
@PlanetSidewinder full song I mean. They did a snippet of it with Glen burtnik
@@beerubbed7345 full song I believe there was a concert in around 1999 with DDY, I think one of his last with them and they did it there I believe.

These notes do not lie in a good place for Gowan's voice. You can hear him struggling. I know how to fix that - get DDY to sing it.
