    We are in the process of making our couch and came across yours. I am so glad because you have addressed some things I didn't think about like the function that we need for our family, and the height, which I think about. I also like to commend you on cutting all your pieces out with a manual handsaw vs a circuit power saw. So above all your couch is amazing and elegant, your hard work has paid off. Oh by the way I love the wide square legs too, which I will be using for my creation. Thank you.

    • @HomewithMelody
      @HomewithMelody  Před 2 lety +1

      I am so happy to hear you find the height bit useful! I am not at the average height so I definitely pay more attention to details like that :D Thank you about your comment on the design, do email/tag me on Instagram your sofa when you've done it, would love to see it!

    Hi Melody--we did it! I had to have each 8' x 4' plywood sheet sawed in half so it could enter our home, but we were able to join them as one. It came out perfectly and my wife and I cannot thank you enough for your plans. It took us about 9 days because I'm 75 and my wife is 66 so we work a bit slower than your average 30-year-old. You rock!

    Just a suggestion for anyone planning to make this sofa. The legs can be made more lightweight. Use two rectangle pieces for the bottom and build the sides with 1-2 inch strips and one through the middle. Think like a figure 8. This makes the legs hollow cutting the weight significantly. Also instead of gluing two sheets for the base, glue a U shaped piece to the bottom. This will reinforce and make the couch look sturdy while not adding so much weight. It is possible that you can make this couch for less cost and material. An additional thing could be adding drawers to the legs because they are hollow. Just some ideas

    • @HomewithMelody
      @HomewithMelody  Před 2 lety +4

      All great ideas! 😃 One sheet for the base is probably enough too, given u added the 5th and 6th legs in the middle 👍

    • @melesiogarcia2469
      @melesiogarcia2469 Před rokem +3

      could u explain what u mean by a u-shape for the base? 😁

    • @missingMBR
      @missingMBR Před rokem +3

      drawers in the legs is such a good idea!

    • @missingMBR
      @missingMBR Před rokem +6

      @@melesiogarcia2469 I think he means the bottom layer of the base is a U shape. The bottom of the U is the front of the sofa, and the sides of the U are the sides of the sofa with no plywood at the back where the backrest is. So from the front and sides, it looks like you've used two sheets of ply but in reality the middle and back of the bottom layer is empty, and the U layer is there just for reinforcing the base. Purely as a means to cut down on the amount of wood used, thus making the build cheaper. Let me know if I haven't explained it well enough.

    • @sedrickhamani7843
      @sedrickhamani7843 Před rokem +1

      Please I don't understand the u-shaped based.

    The shelf on either side is a great idea. Iove the fact that it can be used as a bed, and sawn in half to transfer. I would make a plywood box for the legs (using less wood and lighter to move) but your design would be easier in that regard. I love how the back rest can be adjusted to the correct angle for the user by the shape of the wedges. Nice, and the back rest can double as another mattress for someone staying overnight.
    I'll only use 1 sheet of ply for the base (weight and cost) but overall, it is a great sofa. Many thanks.

    • @HomewithMelody
      @HomewithMelody  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you! I think I have the cost breakdown somewhere... But if I remember correctly, the plywood was £35 each, foam was around £200, the linen was the most expensive part but typically upholstery fabric starts around £45 per meter, I used around 5metres? Totally below £600? This was 2020, so cost likely not comparable nowadays!

    I loved your sofa. I am just little confused that how did you made sure that sitting cushion doesn't slip on board when someone slides on it while sitting. Hope you got what I am trying to say.

      Thank you! Yes I know what you mean, in part 2, you can see that due to the way the cover is made, there is friction between the sofa base and the bottom foam. It does move a little over time, but it definitely doesn't slide!

    Yep. This is really simple and beatifull. I don't get it. Why do companies make soo complicated furniture, yet they are ugly?
