The song originates from the area of Cameroon but the circumstances surrounding the time of the song's origin are less clear. Some sources indicate that the lyrics are, at the very least, a lament from the point of view of a single soldier, but other aspects of the song, including the way it is frequently performed (see cultural context section), has led to conflicting claims that the song is a tribute to African soldiers of World War II or a criticism of Africans who collaborated with European colonial authorities. The song is still used today almost everywhere in Africa by soldiers, policemen, boy scouts, sportsmen, and their supporters, usually during training or for rallying. It is particularly popular in Cameroon, where it is used as a marching song or rallying cry

Lemme explain the ambiguous dilemma I faced while listening to this song. First, I'm from Congo 🇨🇩, as a kid growing up we used to sing this song as part of all games we were participating in, either marble games or other kid games. I didn't know what the song was, till I had a phone. I was keen on knowing the original song but when I heard of "Waka Waka" by Shakira, I was like in two worlds where I didn't really question too much about the sound, coz we used to sing this original masterpiece. So I was lost in words since words don't litteraly correlate. I'm finally happy to find my most favourite song as a kid growing up. Thank likewise, Shakira for letting this song being spread all around the world. For people who are blaming Shakira for not acquiescing the fact that the song "Waka Waka" was sampled , I just read an article on Wikipedia and it's clearly highlighted that the original sound behind her song was from a Cameroonian traditional song. I don't know the language sang in the song but I had a quick wink on the translation of this masterpiece and I really feel it. Such a gem!
This make me cry because lots of people are forget this😢
The sad part is this song ends.
Such a beautiful song it has that upbringing beat that shows struggle of african countries.

I agree. I only found out yesterday that the original song was written in 1968. That was just completely baffling to me, I had no idea!
It was smart of Shakira to sample that song; I'm sure most Europeans/Americans who heard that song never heard the original before.
I don't thank her, since she claims the song belongs to her without acknowledging our African legend.
