The reason why they decided not to give the engines side rods was because it was easier to animate. Had they kept them, though, they probably would've looked and been animated like how they are in the test animation.
All they had to do was not cancel the original show. Make AEG a spin-off and not a reboot. Keep the CGI series still going with older fans in mind, and have AEG going at the same time for the kids who will progress to the CGI series as they get older
The problem with that concept is that the main goal of Thomas is to sell Matel merch. I am not sure targeting the CGI series at older fans will help that, many of them are not interested in the CGI series since they prefer the model era, so I don't think it would encourage them to buy Thomas toys for their kids. Watching old episodes with their kids would work better.
@@survivingworldsteam, just have Mattel push Bachmann to have advertisements for their Thomas and Friends line of model trains more. With Mattel’s main merch being for AEG, having Bachmann advertise the models might push kids to want the Bachmann models more due to them being toy trains for older kids.
That's not what a spin-off is. A spin-off is a separate show that takes place in the same universe as the original show, which is nothing like what AEG is.
The biggest reason they chose to give Thomas & Friends this look was beacuse it was their most popular IP. They could have give it to any other train franchise and it would not have been as big a problem.
The that pissed me off about AEG is that they explicitly said they wouldn't be using wheels as hands. It just shows how little Mattel cares about their own word, let alone a franchise they bought just because it's profitable
They do seem to use their wheels as if they were paws at least, like if they were four-legged animals. Not necessarily dexterous hands. Not yet at least.
All Engines Go is Just a Series to attract kids to buy them merch since that’s actually the reason why big world and big adventures exist too and that’s why Thomas And Friends Was Cancelled In 2017 and rebooted in 2018 with gender equality bullcrap and Shitty Episodes. TBA Any Kids show that is created today especially if is a toy company if it doesn’t make them profit through merch they consider it a failure and get cancelled
Mattel doesn't realize that there are adult fans who love The Railway Series and the classic series of Thomas because they appeal to ALL audiences. Not just a tiny age bracket. Classic Thomas' audience's range (in my mind) is 1-99. AEG's range is around 1-3. Rev. Wilbert Awdry said it best when he said that when you write a children's story, not only do you have to write a story that is entertaining to the child, but also to the parent who has read the story again, & again, & again, & again. At the moment, I am making an HO scale layout of Duck's Branchline that is both faithful to the books and has a season 3-4 look to it.
Great review! You make a good point about how the 2D art style could work if done right! I think the new style of the show was a missed opportunity to make it feel more like the Railway Series books instead of just another kids show. A lot of great kids shows like Thomas were based off of book series and a lot of them try to make the surroundings look straight out of the pages and even some of them start their episodes with a cool shot if a book opening. Thomas & Friends have done similar things in the past like with the Hit Era’s “Dear Christopher” segment before the intro started, or C. Reginald Dalby’s simplistic engine designs being replicated for the Tv models. Now that the show is in 2D, the backgrounds and settings could’ve resembled the beautiful countryside scenery from C. Reginald Dalby’s paintings! However, while I do think the designs could work in the reboot I don’t think the animation can. Every crash is either off screen with a big dust cloud, or is on screen but is really silly and ridiculous and I don’t think crashes can be pulled off as well in 2D as in CGI or Live Action, which is a shame because they were always an exciting part of the show. Also the soundtrack is really repetitive to me. I problem I have with the Hit Era is the overused themes that never change whether it’s a Season 7 episode or a Season 11 one, but atleast the music was good to listen to on it’s own, and the music in the runaway scenes were pretty exciting and unique! But the soundtrack in All Engines Go is even more repetitive, because the characters don’t have their own unique themes (besides Kana) and there’s not an episode in the reboot I can remember that has a special theme made specifically for a certain scene, and to me it makes the episodes less memorable. Even as it’s own show, All Engines Go doesn’t really make sense with how the island of Sodor works. There’s no express trains, there’s rarely any passengers, Gordon does Sir Topham Hatt’s job, and there of the engines rolling freely without rails, which makes the tracks pointless. I like some parts of the reboot, like James, Annie, Clarabel, Salty, and Cranky being in character and having great voice actors. Or Carly being less annoying than she was in CGI. But those little things can’t save the reboot for me and it’s sad that this great franchise is being owned by a company that doesn’t care about the show’s legacy, and the great music, characters, visuals, stories, action, realism, and variety in tone being completely wiped away so the show can be as basic and bland as every other Kids show out now. Maybe if we’re lucky enough someone who works on the reboot will see your video and understand why All Engines Go is disrespectful to the franchise it’s based on, and maybe some of those problems will be fixed or attempt to be, but even if that doesn’t happen I’m grateful that you made this video!
Yeah suddenly the Hit Era and it’s lows don’t seem completely bad. Yes the ridiculous specials, overusage of bland 3 track sets covered in trees and the 3 strikes formula still suck but at least they operated in the manner of trains. If the AEG characters use their wheels for hands, than it’s already showing they don’t care
Honestly as someone who disliked the reboot, even to the point where I had to explain it to my folks who knew of my lifelong love for the franchise, I told them that Bruno is something original out of the reboot I don't hate and that ignoring the autism brownie points that Mattel was using him as a vehicle (this coming from me who is branded autistic but doesn't give a crap about the subject in the slightest), I could easily see him as being a part of not just the prior TV series, but I could even see a well written story about him back in the days of the RWS.
unfortunately I think Mattel just did it for brownie points as the company has said that they don't want to associate the brand with autism, however it is good to see that the creators of the character actually care about their work, heck push-along Bruno is the only piece of merchandise that I have bought from the new show
@@WaksWorld05 Yes and I acknowledge that, however that doesn't change the fact that Mattel only saw Bruno, unfortunately, as a marketing ploy based on how they reacted in the Thomas Land case like you mentioned. This however doesn't mean that Bruno was purely created for marketing only. As you said a lot of care went into his creation to accurately portray somebody on the autistic spectrum.
Mattel keeps thinking the toys aren't selling because of the show, when in reality, the toys aren't selling because of the toys themselves. Which somehow isn't blindingly obvious to them.
It’s the toys’ own fault. Also, the show was harder to access during the Brenner era with the exception of CZcams, resulting in kids not responding. And Mattel thought that the reason why kids weren’t responding, was because it was not fast paced enough like Paw Patrol, when that’s just not the case.
I hardly hear anyone outside the internet talk about Thomas these days! Do Mattel even know what they're doing with it? Sure the Barbie movie is doing well at the box office (knowing Mattel were in financial turmoil in recent years, I wonder if they conceived the Barbie movie as a band aid to said financial woes?) but ANY company, not matter how big, can fall as a result of one mistake!
Keep the model series and CGI series episodes close. We are going to need them to get the literal engines back on the tracks. Even the Hit era and Nitrogen era. We pick up with the end of BWBA and see if we can make something Wilbert Awdry would make if he were alive today.
No offense, but I do wish that Mattel would sale the Thomas franchise to other company which hopefully take good care in bringing back and continue the classic original show that we use to know!
Haven't seen the show (mere-second clips don't count), but I think you made a very good essay video on the reboot. Also, I really like your mockup of Kana. Looks much cleaner than what she really looks like.
My pitch for a Thomas the Tank Engine movie would be as follows: It's World War 2. A boy, who is obsessed with trains because his father raised him on them, is pressured by his adoptive uncle to train to become a soldier to fight when he is old enough. He refuses to, and so his uncle takes him on a boat trip to the Isle of Man where he can have an old friend of his train him instead. But, during that trip, the boy is shipwrecked on Sodor while his uncle dies in the wreckage. He comes to know Thomas and his friends, and through his interactions with them, they all learn that being useful isn't just doing what you were designed to do, but just making other people happy, and just wanting to live with purpose in their lives. All the characters would have arcs of their own that tie into one another's (James learning that he's more than just his red paint, Percy learning he can do more than just pull small trains, Gordon learning to not be so arrogant, etc.) and Thomas's backstory would be directly based on his actual origins as a bedtime story told by a father to his sick son. The tone would be laid back and low-stakes, just like the books and the show, even while it is tackling big themes on what separates humans from machines, and how death can make your life more precious. The trains' mouths would move when they talk, but they would adapt a stop-motion aesthetic, like something in The Lego Movie or Marcel The Shell with Shoes On. The cast would include Jim Broadbent as Sir Topham Hatt, Dev Patel as Edward, Charles Dance as Gordon, Luke Evans as James, Rami Malek as Percy, while Thomas would be voiced by an up-and-coming child actor. The look and score would be based heavily on that in the tv series, with many of the same shot compensations and music cues. It would be something made for the fans while also being accessible to newcomers who may not have truly understood the appeal of Thomas The Tank Engine and while he has endured for generations.
I demand that the credits of this movie feature at the start "IN memoriam of the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. We hate the bullshit that Mattel has made out of your franchise so brought it back to its respectful place in the hearts of loving generations. May you and your trains continue to roll on for eternities to come, as truly 'the world's number one'"
I enjoyed your review on All Engines Go. You did a really great job. It may not be a favourite to most people, but as time went on, there are people that do genuinely like it, and that is fine. Thomas can be enjoyed by any generation of people, old or new. There's fans of the original show, and there's fan of the reboot.
LeoKimVideo was mentioned: he said that the merch of All Engines Go was a neccessary evil to keep the franchise alive. I just wish that they kept this look to merchandising in the way that My First Thomas was. Remember that?
After Thomas and the royal engine, Mattel did have plans produce one more classic series before the AEG take over, from the visions, it could’ve been the best series of the whole BWBA era for Thomas. Since there’s two separated animation studios, we could’ve very well seen both seasons of the two separate show’s premiere in early and late 2021.
Is the reboot THAT BAD? My answer: YES!!! Because not only it destroyed my childhood, but it insulted the works of Britt Allcroft and the Awdry family!!! In fact, this new show deserves all the hate and backlash it gets!!! However, Neil Crone’s reprisal as Gordon in the US dub and Bruno as a character are two of the only GOOD qualities of this show.

Thomas was designed to aim at kids and adults. But this reboot takes everything away. In fact, this show is soo bad that even some kids that did liked Thomas hated this reboot.
I know big companies like Hasbro, Mattel, Disney, Paramount etc have cash cow properties they will seemingly always be able to rely on to stay profitable, including Transformers, My Little Pony, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol and others but no company is too big to fail! It is ALWAYS possible for a company to make a mistake or two SO big that it causes them to fall HARD. I'm not saying Mattel WILL go that way, but I HAVE heard about their financial problems in recent years, leading me to believe the Barbie movie was made to really help them get back up. In the 80s, Atari's then-parent company Warner Communications focused too much on the E.T. Atari 2600 game, getting it rushed into stores in time for Christmas and that game being a flop, causing them to lose a LOT of money through 1983 and in 1984 they sold Atari off, split into 2 companies: Atari Corp. and Atari Games. I'm sure DreamWorks will make a lot of dough at the box office with Trolls Band Together and Kung Fu Panda 4 but the box office failure of Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken could've happened with any movie! What if Trolls 3 or KFP 4 turn out to be really bad, get universally panned and flop at the box office? I know they're both based on popular DW IPs but good movies can have bad sequels! Personally, with how badly Mattel have been handling Thomas since BWBA, I REALLY hope they LOSE Thomas one way or another! What would I do if I were made Thomas' new owner? - put the original 5 pre-Gullane seasons back on TV (the original cuts, NOT the goof-laced remasters seen on later DVDs! If showing the original cuts means I have to track down the master tapes of foreign dubs and play the English soundtracks over those, so be it!) - make all 24 pre-AEG seasons easily available in full on DVD and also release the HD seasons in full on Blu Ray - give Tomy the motorized and die-cast Thomas toy rights and Brio the wooden toy rights (Brio DID have a Thomas range until sometime after Magic Railroad came out!) - get to work on the reboot Thomas DESERVES: a proper retelling of most RWS and pre-Gullane TV stories, some things I'd have to change to be more gender/disability/race inclusive (one change will be that I'd make Duck female, which said engine WAS in the Greek dub until season 17!) and my first choice of animation studio? Blue Zoo, responsible for Digby Dragon, Pip and Posy and the Paddington reboot! Their model-looking CGI is really good! The faster-paced style they use for their Paddington reboot would be a good fit for a new Tintin movie! - overall, I highly doubt it'll happen, but if I WERE made Thomas' new owner, I'd nurse said IP back to health the way it deserves!

Here’s what they could’ve done: - make AEG a CZcams exclusive thing and it can be that nothing “show” that doesn’t affect the brand or heck use Barney for that kind of scenario instead since you can do *anything* with Barney - have their 2022 Wooden Railway Reboot and maybe the interactive motorized talking engines be at stores and have the AEG merch stay online - let CGI *not continue* but have reruns on Cartoonito and maybe even have Paramount+ have the UK version considering that Bob the Builder on Paramount+ only has the UK dub or heck maybe if Mattel can’t even do anything with HiT in general (they let Thomas be anything else but a train and don’t even care about the other HiT properties) they should sell HiT to Sony but they just focus on the merchandise and that’s that
It annoys how people said something like "Mattel created Kana," "Mattel created Bruno," "Mattel created Rebecca," or "Mattel created this character and that character." It was the writers, not the company itself. Mattel is only responsible for the toy brands. Writer =/= Company. Anyways, well said. I am someone who was introduced to Thomas as a one year old back in 2003. I despise AEG, but this video is well done made.
Carly being turned into a crane engine does actually have a reason to it. Show creator Rick Suvalle wanted a big sister figure to pair up with Sandy and believed Carly made the most sense as there were no fermale crane engines in the original show.

Personally, if I HAD to choose, i would have rather us still have bwba than THIS. But, i honestly wish bwba didnt happen, and we still had the brenner era. Imagine if the brenner era used remixed versions of the classic series themes. THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!!! Anything is better than what we got 😞
Instead of BWBA they should have done some thing with 30 episode seasons where 15 episodes are set in a 21st century Sodor and the other 15 episodes are retells of RWS and Classic Series.

While I do think kana being a ripoff of coco from Chuggington is a possibility it’s more likely that she is a stolen oc as I found out that someone called merciresolution made there own Thomas oc named Kohana with a very similar name and design I’m unsure if it’s true that Mattel stole Kohana or not but it’s decently likely Also while I personally don’t like aeg hell I think it’s abysmal as both a show and a reboot but I do think this video was very good and had a nice take good job on the video you honestly deserve a lot more subscribers and views then you already have
Something I realized about AEG is that it sometimes does not apply its own logic. There was that one episode where James was scared of the dragon thing and was backing up. He could've just jumped to the other rail no problem (Like, how the other engines kept doing) but he kept backing up. Which is so weird imo. I think there are more cases of AEG not sticking to it's own logic (or lack thereof) but bah, I can't be bothered to watch it myself, the voices tick me off

I wasn’t going to watch this before because I’m very argumentative and thought this would basically be only the usual negative rant, but I’ve seen your updates (I just didn’t recognize you, sorry). I’m glad that this is a more composed video describing the good and the bad. I do want to bring to light about the writing here though; I think the writing has raised it’s standards from the episode ‘Something Broken, Something Blue’. I never expected an All Engines Go episode to get emotional, if you have seen the episodes with Thomas and his boxcar ‘Boxy’, you’ll have to watch this one it’s one of the best episodes of the series ever. I even saw some other non-AEG fans actually feel for Thomas in the episode. Daniel Share-Storm teased that an episode for season 3 will have a really intense/emotional moment for Bruno, after seeing this episode, I’m even more excited for what the Bruno season 3 episode will bring.
I was born in 84, my dad actually worked at Hunslet Engine Company, who BUILT trains that were shipped all over the world (you've probably seen one of theirs) and was reet into Thomas as a kid, even had the Railway Series books and some of the toys! I grew up, grew out of Thomas, as you do and kind of forgot about it, until I saw it on the EPG one day and thought "huh? Is that still going? Huh..."! Then there was Falkone's Synth Metal Remix of the theme! Then, segwaying from their obligatory roast of how badly mismanaged Southern Rail is, "Have I Got News For You?", the long running satirical news quiz on BBC1, brought up the Big World Reboot, Private Eye editor Ian Hislop praising the new engines and characters they were going to be bringing in! I had copped for it before, but was a little apprehensive, feeling it didn't really feel like the Thomas I knew as a kid... Then, one fateful morning, I copped for All Engines Go... I thought my coffee had been spiked... I live alone... You know, I do believe there is a way to rescue Thomas the Tank Engine... Does anyone else, even if you're not from the same era as me, remember how we used to view My Little Pony before Gen. IV, aka, "Friendship is Magic"? How it used to be jus for little brats? How we used to think of "Turtles is for boys, Pony is for brats and Care Bears is for toddlers"? You know how that has changed, albeit not entirely (Care Bears is still really only for little 'uns), so now we have teachers praising the characterisation in My Little Pony? In My Little Pony!! Maybe, Lauren Faust! I don't have anything else for the rest of that last sentence, but, really, do I need it?
Thomas the Tank Engine Series was one of my oldest childhood memories and since then I love both the models and the CGI. It's a shame that the CGI Thomas and Friends series has coming to the end because I would to see continuing visiting other countries a bit more as he hasn't have a chance to visit American, Germany, France, Mexico, Berlin, and Japan as well as meeting the other engines featuring in "Thomas and Friends The Great Race" like Vinnie, Frieda, Axel, Ivan, Etienne and Carlos. But sadly it's not going to happen now no thanks to Mattel.
25:30 Funny enough that you brought up Hilda, because it made me think of the production similarities between that show and Classic Thomas -Both are British book-based TV series with a laid back vibe. -The OG book writers had some part in them (Luke Pearson more than Rev. Awdry, but still) -Both have Feature Length movies (though Mountain King is vastly superior to Magic Railroad) -Hilda S3 plans to have completely original stories due to every book in the OG book series being already adapted (Much like Thomas S5) -Both have cheeky main characters who are small yet ambitious

27:46 No your not crazy at all, the designs and character are pretty similar, however Kana is a stolen Real Life Thomas OC, On Twitter a user by the name of MerciResolutions created an OC by the name of “Kohana”, Kohana was a young electric engine with a bubbly personality to be a sort of opposite to her much Older in Age, more experienced Steam Engine OC Kana has a lot of similarities to Kohana, one there both Purple High Speed Electric Engines, 2 they both have yellow eyes, 3 they both have almost identical names and I’m pretty sure they’re both Japanese, and finally they have identical personalities, unfortunately the original creator of Kohana can’t legally do anything, they don’t have the money and even they said they’d most likely lose a court case

If you ask me Thomas definitely needs a massive overhaul once All Engines Go's 4 seasons are done like how Faust did with MLP in 2010 and how she wrote more mature stories for the show because if your target audience are upset with your new series and you shrug off that critism from the very demographic you're aiming for, You know you've done something wrong and landed yourself in deep s**t
I've not watched any of AEG, though I remember Chuggington from when my kids were young and kinda liked it (though my god that theme tune is annoying and stuck in my head so much). We definitely need some more "proper" David Mitton era style Thomas, perhaps with modern CG that looks much more convincingly like the model era.
Another bad example of a reboot that Mattel did is Masters of the Universe Revelation. They advertised He-man to be prominent, but he dies in the first episode. Later on, he returns to life but doesn’t become He-man again until the finale. He is stuck as his alter ego, Prince Adam, who is supposed to be Adora’s (She-Ra’s) twin brother which the 2018 She-Ra show completely ignored due to She-Ra being split off of Masters of the Universe in terms of IP even though the original She-Ra was used to advertise Masters of the Universe toys (He-man included). Also, the more adult oriented Thomas merch is licensed out to Bachmann with its HO, G, and N scale models of the characters.
@@WaksWorld05, it is actually a reboot. It might be set in a similar world to the 80s He-man show, but it isn’t. It was advertised as a continuation, but legally, it can’t be a continuation due to Universal.
Funny you mention He-Man and She-Ra because they teased Hordak and The Horde in the CGI MOTU reboot. Which probably won’t get anywhere because of low sales. I wish it did better because I wanted to see their take on Catra.
The main reason all engines go sucks is the unrealistic portrayal of the trains. The thing that made thomas Unique was that it portrayed trains more realistic, unlike other train shows such as chuggington

I think we've all learnt a lesson here Never trust Mattel with a beloved UK property since they've driven Thomas, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam to their rebooted graves I don't really consider this reboot to be Thomas the Tank Engine but a Paw Patrol wannabe show with Thomas's skin on it like the Unlucky Tug said and even if it wasn't related to the Thomas brand, there would still be problems with it such as freight cars moving by themselves and the engines not needing tracks to get around when they can just use their wheels to walk around which defeats the whole purpose of them being.. well you know..... TRAINS!

@@jacobjcb8883 the only time Mattel screwed up an original property to my knowledge was the 2016 Monster High series (and even then the new 2023 version is an improvement over the trash pile that was G2 MH)

When I heard Thomas and friends was geeting a reboot back then I never really cared, but when I watched a few episodes of AEG along while watching angry reviewers afterwards, I truly understand now. The thing is I wanted to see if someone would at least make a review with not too much negativity. After all, a bad reboot must have some good things in it. That is why I found your video, and I'd expect someone like The Unlucky Tug to make a video similar to yours and it's really good. This part is off topic, but I have a question here at 18:29 for "Wrighing On The Rails". Is the music at 18:33 from Persona 5? If so then you must have good taste in music.
I showed an episode of AEG to my parents one day, and they genuinely enjoyed the wacky parts. I guess to people who view TTTE as a kid's show and know nothing about its 'core appeal', the reboot isn't that bad, but I really can't sit through an episode knowing the show's history. Or maybe I just personally don't enjoy cartoonish kid voices. No matter how long I listen to them, I just can't get used to them. Besides, I think TTTE is slowly evolving to fit younger audiences. I recently watched the whole show from season one to ten, and I could sense that the age was dropping to 9, 10 to like 5, 6. And now AEG is... 3,4?
What I would do is make a children's show about a realistic railway, featuring talking trains like Thomas. I say realistic because most train children's shows portray trains unrealistically. I imagine the main character to be an electric train called Eric, and he will be based on a class 460
This review was great - very balanced and fair, and you did a good job pointing out the good and bad of AEG and provide reason as to why, on its own, it's not as bad as one might think. From the perspective of a Thomas fan though, I think the reason why the reboot is so hated, particularly by fans of the original show, is because Mattel markets AEG as Thomas when it is absolutely not Thomas, because the core appeal of the realism - including how complex and interesting the characters are - is just gone. It started with BWBA and was then exacerbated in AEG. It feels like Mattel has intentionally bastardised the show's legacy and fandom just to make way for this cookie-cutter reboot, which is so disrespectful to the Rev. Wilbert Awdry, the original source material and those who loved it for what is was, and that hurts. Anyway, great video man. I wish you luck on your endeavours!

Teen titans go is an example of a *HORRIBLE* reboot of a great show. Like really? That show is a brain dead joke that is an utter disaster and mockery of what the original show was, I know this isn’t related to Thomas and friends, but I had to get that off my chest
But it has moments to say the least and the team behind the show is happy on what they’re making. Executives just wanting to use these brands and go for the youngest approach to kids.
After the two seasons of all engines go get released and the live action Thomas movie what's next for Thomas after that is Mattel going to continue holding on to Thomas as one of its properties or is it going to sell it off to tomy or Disney who will fix Thomas and make it better than before?? This is a pitty. I understand that the original method of making it with real models become to expensive. But what they could have done could be to make high resolution 3D scans of not just the roalingstock but also all the landscapes. (well, the one that is still around) and render the series the same way as the lego movie. Ultra realsitic 3D. I bet most people could not tell the diffrance between ultra realistic 3D and real models.
While I didn't go near the reboot myself (I just cannot bare looking at the animation - like I know Sodor is meant to be a brightly place, but not this bright here). However, it's each our own opinions and I'm perfectly fine for anyone who may enjoy it. I guess the only good thing I like is how Neil Crone and Eddie Glen from Magic Railroad came back (only Neil Crone reprising his role of Gordon while Eddie Glen did Toby - both of which for the US dub given that both productions were recorded in Canada alongside Shining Time Station and the CGI Series). Also, given the news of Duck coming back to the show, I wonder if they would get Kevin Frank or another Total Drama actor to voice him).
I never liked the new reboot of all Engines Go ever since it was announced back in 2021 and I still don’t watch it today it has lost all the charm and appeal that the original series represented and is insulting to the memory of the Rev W Awdrys timeless stories about a little blue tank engine and his many friends working together to be really useful engines on the fictional island of Sodor that still continues to inspire fans both young and old to this day and were a huge part of my childhood and I that’s why I will continue reading the Rev W Awdrys books and rewatch the classic model series made by Britt Allcroft and narrated by Sir Ringo Starr and the late Michel Angelis 👍❤️

I actually never watch all engines go but i did like watch 3 episodes but mostly half of the episode to where it's bout to end which shows how much i don't care about this reboot however i watched a episode that had in the title rusty i thought rusty was gonna come back but instead it was a disappointment, the episode actually was talking about a item named rusty that diesel has after that i couldn't follow the rest of the episode but i was still watching i just couldn't follow the plot due to how disappointed i was. I'm also planning to make a vid bout how to fix all engines go. From what we all see the big problem here is the show being unrealistic maybe if they had brought back some of the old crew members it could have been better or instead of a thomas reboot (that would make fans sad or idk) they could have make a show for big tim or a chuggington reboot. Teen Titans Go is not really a reboot though. It's a Comedy Spin off like thunder cats roar was. As for Mattel there weird they got Angry over the Aqua Barbie Girl song saying it was too rude yet its really tame only to get Nikli Minaj to do a terible remake of it for the Actual Barbie movie who is the exact oppsite music wise.

I'm not a Thomas fan but I hate All Engines Go! Like, Thomas was meant to be a talking vehicle show like no other. By that I mean that it is realistic unlike the other talking vehicle shows. And now it is like any other run of the mill talking vehicle show. It's so tragic to see Thomas lose its charm and uniqueness.

The reason why they decided not to give the engines side rods was because it was easier to animate. Had they kept them, though, they probably would've looked and been animated like how they are in the test animation.

All they had to do was not cancel the original show. Make AEG a spin-off and not a reboot. Keep the CGI series still going with older fans in mind, and have AEG going at the same time for the kids who will progress to the CGI series as they get older
The problem with that concept is that the main goal of Thomas is to sell Matel merch. I am not sure targeting the CGI series at older fans will help that, many of them are not interested in the CGI series since they prefer the model era, so I don't think it would encourage them to buy Thomas toys for their kids. Watching old episodes with their kids would work better.

With Mattel’s main merch being for AEG, having Bachmann advertise the models might push kids to want the Bachmann models more due to them being toy trains for older kids.

That's not what a spin-off is. A spin-off is a separate show that takes place in the same universe as the original show, which is nothing like what AEG is.

Mattel doesn't realize that there are adult fans who love The Railway Series and the classic series of Thomas because they appeal to ALL audiences. Not just a tiny age bracket. Classic Thomas' audience's range (in my mind) is 1-99. AEG's range is around 1-3. Rev. Wilbert Awdry said it best when he said that when you write a children's story, not only do you have to write a story that is entertaining to the child, but also to the parent who has read the story again, & again, & again, & again.
At the moment, I am making an HO scale layout of Duck's Branchline that is both faithful to the books and has a season 3-4 look to it.
It just doesn’t sell as well and that’s a shame. If they did a barbie but made it less political maybe there’d be hope.
Great review! You make a good point about how the 2D art style could work if done right! I think the new style of the show was a missed opportunity to make it feel more like the Railway Series books instead of just another kids show. A lot of great kids shows like Thomas were based off of book series and a lot of them try to make the surroundings look straight out of the pages and even some of them start their episodes with a cool shot if a book opening. Thomas & Friends have done similar things in the past like with the Hit Era’s “Dear Christopher” segment before the intro started, or C. Reginald Dalby’s simplistic engine designs being replicated for the Tv models. Now that the show is in 2D, the backgrounds and settings could’ve resembled the beautiful countryside scenery from C. Reginald Dalby’s paintings! However, while I do think the designs could work in the reboot I don’t think the animation can. Every crash is either off screen with a big dust cloud, or is on screen but is really silly and ridiculous and I don’t think crashes can be pulled off as well in 2D as in CGI or Live Action, which is a shame because they were always an exciting part of the show. Also the soundtrack is really repetitive to me. I problem I have with the Hit Era is the overused themes that never change whether it’s a Season 7 episode or a Season 11 one, but atleast the music was good to listen to on it’s own, and the music in the runaway scenes were pretty exciting and unique! But the soundtrack in All Engines Go is even more repetitive, because the characters don’t have their own unique themes (besides Kana) and there’s not an episode in the reboot I can remember that has a special theme made specifically for a certain scene, and to me it makes the episodes less memorable. Even as it’s own show, All Engines Go doesn’t really make sense with how the island of Sodor works. There’s no express trains, there’s rarely any passengers, Gordon does Sir Topham Hatt’s job, and there of the engines rolling freely without rails, which makes the tracks pointless. I like some parts of the reboot, like James, Annie, Clarabel, Salty, and Cranky being in character and having great voice actors. Or Carly being less annoying than she was in CGI. But those little things can’t save the reboot for me and it’s sad that this great franchise is being owned by a company that doesn’t care about the show’s legacy, and the great music, characters, visuals, stories, action, realism, and variety in tone being completely wiped away so the show can be as basic and bland as every other Kids show out now. Maybe if we’re lucky enough someone who works on the reboot will see your video and understand why All Engines Go is disrespectful to the franchise it’s based on, and maybe some of those problems will be fixed or attempt to be, but even if that doesn’t happen I’m grateful that you made this video!

Honestly as someone who disliked the reboot, even to the point where I had to explain it to my folks who knew of my lifelong love for the franchise, I told them that Bruno is something original out of the reboot I don't hate and that ignoring the autism brownie points that Mattel was using him as a vehicle (this coming from me who is branded autistic but doesn't give a crap about the subject in the slightest), I could easily see him as being a part of not just the prior TV series, but I could even see a well written story about him back in the days of the RWS.

@@WaksWorld05 Yes and I acknowledge that, however that doesn't change the fact that Mattel only saw Bruno, unfortunately, as a marketing ploy based on how they reacted in the Thomas Land case like you mentioned. This however doesn't mean that Bruno was purely created for marketing only. As you said a lot of care went into his creation to accurately portray somebody on the autistic spectrum.
Mattel keeps thinking the toys aren't selling because of the show, when in reality, the toys aren't selling because of the toys themselves. Which somehow isn't blindingly obvious to them.
It’s the toys’ own fault. Also, the show was harder to access during the Brenner era with the exception of CZcams, resulting in kids not responding. And Mattel thought that the reason why kids weren’t responding, was because it was not fast paced enough like Paw Patrol, when that’s just not the case.
I hardly hear anyone outside the internet talk about Thomas these days! Do Mattel even know what they're doing with it? Sure the Barbie movie is doing well at the box office (knowing Mattel were in financial turmoil in recent years, I wonder if they conceived the Barbie movie as a band aid to said financial woes?) but ANY company, not matter how big, can fall as a result of one mistake!

My pitch for a Thomas the Tank Engine movie would be as follows: It's World War 2. A boy, who is obsessed with trains because his father raised him on them, is pressured by his adoptive uncle to train to become a soldier to fight when he is old enough. He refuses to, and so his uncle takes him on a boat trip to the Isle of Man where he can have an old friend of his train him instead. But, during that trip, the boy is shipwrecked on Sodor while his uncle dies in the wreckage. He comes to know Thomas and his friends, and through his interactions with them, they all learn that being useful isn't just doing what you were designed to do, but just making other people happy, and just wanting to live with purpose in their lives. All the characters would have arcs of their own that tie into one another's (James learning that he's more than just his red paint, Percy learning he can do more than just pull small trains, Gordon learning to not be so arrogant, etc.) and Thomas's backstory would be directly based on his actual origins as a bedtime story told by a father to his sick son. The tone would be laid back and low-stakes, just like the books and the show, even while it is tackling big themes on what separates humans from machines, and how death can make your life more precious. The trains' mouths would move when they talk, but they would adapt a stop-motion aesthetic, like something in The Lego Movie or Marcel The Shell with Shoes On. The cast would include Jim Broadbent as Sir Topham Hatt, Dev Patel as Edward, Charles Dance as Gordon, Luke Evans as James, Rami Malek as Percy, while Thomas would be voiced by an up-and-coming child actor. The look and score would be based heavily on that in the tv series, with many of the same shot compensations and music cues. It would be something made for the fans while also being accessible to newcomers who may not have truly understood the appeal of Thomas The Tank Engine and while he has endured for generations.

It may not be a favourite to most people, but as time went on, there are people that do genuinely like it, and that is fine.
Thomas can be enjoyed by any generation of people, old or new. There's fans of the original show, and there's fan of the reboot.

After Thomas and the royal engine, Mattel did have plans produce one more classic series before the AEG take over, from the visions, it could’ve been the best series of the whole BWBA era for Thomas. Since there’s two separated animation studios, we could’ve very well seen both seasons of the two separate show’s premiere in early and late 2021.

Thomas was designed to aim at kids and adults. But this reboot takes everything away. In fact, this show is soo bad that even some kids that did liked Thomas hated this reboot.
I know big companies like Hasbro, Mattel, Disney, Paramount etc have cash cow properties they will seemingly always be able to rely on to stay profitable, including Transformers, My Little Pony, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol and others but no company is too big to fail! It is ALWAYS possible for a company to make a mistake or two SO big that it causes them to fall HARD. I'm not saying Mattel WILL go that way, but I HAVE heard about their financial problems in recent years, leading me to believe the Barbie movie was made to really help them get back up. In the 80s, Atari's then-parent company Warner Communications focused too much on the E.T. Atari 2600 game, getting it rushed into stores in time for Christmas and that game being a flop, causing them to lose a LOT of money through 1983 and in 1984 they sold Atari off, split into 2 companies: Atari Corp. and Atari Games. I'm sure DreamWorks will make a lot of dough at the box office with Trolls Band Together and Kung Fu Panda 4 but the box office failure of Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken could've happened with any movie! What if Trolls 3 or KFP 4 turn out to be really bad, get universally panned and flop at the box office? I know they're both based on popular DW IPs but good movies can have bad sequels! Personally, with how badly Mattel have been handling Thomas since BWBA, I REALLY hope they LOSE Thomas one way or another!
What would I do if I were made Thomas' new owner?
- put the original 5 pre-Gullane seasons back on TV (the original cuts, NOT the goof-laced remasters seen on later DVDs! If showing the original cuts means I have to track down the master tapes of foreign dubs and play the English soundtracks over those, so be it!)
- make all 24 pre-AEG seasons easily available in full on DVD and also release the HD seasons in full on Blu Ray
- give Tomy the motorized and die-cast Thomas toy rights and Brio the wooden toy rights (Brio DID have a Thomas range until sometime after Magic Railroad came out!)
- get to work on the reboot Thomas DESERVES: a proper retelling of most RWS and pre-Gullane TV stories, some things I'd have to change to be more gender/disability/race inclusive (one change will be that I'd make Duck female, which said engine WAS in the Greek dub until season 17!) and my first choice of animation studio? Blue Zoo, responsible for Digby Dragon, Pip and Posy and the Paddington reboot! Their model-looking CGI is really good! The faster-paced style they use for their Paddington reboot would be a good fit for a new Tintin movie!

- have their 2022 Wooden Railway Reboot and maybe the interactive motorized talking engines be at stores and have the AEG merch stay online
- let CGI *not continue* but have reruns on Cartoonito and maybe even have Paramount+ have the UK version considering that Bob the Builder on Paramount+ only has the UK dub
or heck maybe if Mattel can’t even do anything with HiT in general (they let Thomas be anything else but a train and don’t even care about the other HiT properties) they should sell HiT to Sony but they just focus on the merchandise and that’s that
I would argue AEG should have been a Geotrax reboot, a cartoony train property Mattel made themselves.

Something I realized about AEG is that it sometimes does not apply its own logic. There was that one episode where James was scared of the dragon thing and was backing up. He could've just jumped to the other rail no problem (Like, how the other engines kept doing) but he kept backing up. Which is so weird imo.
I think there are more cases of AEG not sticking to it's own logic (or lack thereof) but bah, I can't be bothered to watch it myself, the voices tick me off

I wasn’t going to watch this before because I’m very argumentative and thought this would basically be only the usual negative rant, but I’ve seen your updates (I just didn’t recognize you, sorry). I’m glad that this is a more composed video describing the good and the bad. I do want to bring to light about the writing here though;
I think the writing has raised it’s standards from the episode ‘Something Broken, Something Blue’. I never expected an All Engines Go episode to get emotional, if you have seen the episodes with Thomas and his boxcar ‘Boxy’, you’ll have to watch this one it’s one of the best episodes of the series ever. I even saw some other non-AEG fans actually feel for Thomas in the episode. Daniel Share-Storm teased that an episode for season 3 will have a really intense/emotional moment for Bruno, after seeing this episode, I’m even more excited for what the Bruno season 3 episode will bring.
I was born in 84, my dad actually worked at Hunslet Engine Company, who BUILT trains that were shipped all over the world (you've probably seen one of theirs) and was reet into Thomas as a kid, even had the Railway Series books and some of the toys! I grew up, grew out of Thomas, as you do and kind of forgot about it, until I saw it on the EPG one day and thought "huh? Is that still going? Huh..."! Then there was Falkone's Synth Metal Remix of the theme! Then, segwaying from their obligatory roast of how badly mismanaged Southern Rail is, "Have I Got News For You?", the long running satirical news quiz on BBC1, brought up the Big World Reboot, Private Eye editor Ian Hislop praising the new engines and characters they were going to be bringing in! I had copped for it before, but was a little apprehensive, feeling it didn't really feel like the Thomas I knew as a kid... Then, one fateful morning, I copped for All Engines Go... I thought my coffee had been spiked... I live alone...
You know, I do believe there is a way to rescue Thomas the Tank Engine... Does anyone else, even if you're not from the same era as me, remember how we used to view My Little Pony before Gen. IV, aka, "Friendship is Magic"? How it used to be jus for little brats? How we used to think of "Turtles is for boys, Pony is for brats and Care Bears is for toddlers"? Thomas the Tank Engine Series was one of my oldest childhood memories and since then I love both the models and the CGI. It's a shame that the CGI Thomas and Friends series has coming to the end because I would to see continuing visiting other countries a bit more as he hasn't have a chance to visit American, Germany, France, Mexico, Berlin, and Japan as well as meeting the other engines featuring in "Thomas and Friends The Great Race" like Vinnie, Frieda, Axel, Ivan, Etienne and Carlos. But sadly it's not going to happen now no thanks to Mattel.

-Both are British book-based TV series with a laid back vibe.
-The OG book writers had some part in them (Luke Pearson more than Rev. Awdry, but still)
-Both have Feature Length movies (though Mountain King is vastly superior to Magic Railroad)
-Hilda S3 plans to have completely original stories due to every book in the OG book series being already adapted (Much like Thomas S5)

Kana has a lot of similarities to Kohana, one there both Purple High Speed Electric Engines, 2 they both have yellow eyes, 3 they both have almost identical names and I’m pretty sure they’re both Japanese, and finally they have identical personalities, unfortunately the original creator of Kohana can’t legally do anything, they don’t have the money and even they said they’d most likely lose a court case

Thomas definitely needs a massive overhaul once All Engines Go's 4 seasons are done like how Faust did with MLP in 2010 and how she wrote more mature stories for the show because if your target audience are upset with your new series and you shrug off that critism from the very demographic you're aiming for, You know you've done something wrong and landed yourself in deep s**t
I've not watched any of AEG, though I remember Chuggington from when my kids were young and kinda liked it (though my god that theme tune is annoying and stuck in my head so much). We definitely need some more "proper" David Mitton era style Thomas, perhaps with modern CG that looks much more convincingly like the model era.
Another bad example of a reboot that Mattel did is Masters of the Universe Revelation. They advertised He-man to be prominent, but he dies in the first episode. Later on, he returns to life but doesn’t become He-man again until the finale. He is stuck as his alter ego, Prince Adam, who is supposed to be Adora’s (She-Ra’s) twin brother which the 2018 She-Ra show completely ignored due to She-Ra being split off of Masters of the Universe in terms of IP even though the original She-Ra was used to advertise Masters of the Universe toys (He-man included).
Also, the more adult oriented Thomas merch is licensed out to Bachmann with its HO, G, and N scale models of the characters.
I didn't mention that as it was a "continuation", not a reboot.

The main reason all engines go sucks is the unrealistic portrayal of the trains. The thing that made thomas Unique was that it portrayed trains more realistic, unlike other train shows such as chuggington

When I heard Thomas and friends was geeting a reboot back then I never really cared, but when I watched a few episodes of AEG along while watching angry reviewers afterwards, I truly understand now. The thing is I wanted to see if someone would at least make a review with not too much negativity. After all, a bad reboot must have some good things in it. That is why I found your video, and I'd expect someone like The Unlucky Tug to make a video similar to yours and it's really good.

I showed an episode of AEG to my parents one day, and they genuinely enjoyed the wacky parts. I guess to people who view TTTE as a kid's show and know nothing about its 'core appeal', the reboot isn't that bad, but I really can't sit through an episode knowing the show's history. Or maybe I just personally don't enjoy cartoonish kid voices. No matter how long I listen to them, I just can't get used to them.
Besides, I think TTTE is slowly evolving to fit younger audiences. I recently watched the whole show from season one to ten, and I could sense that the age was dropping to 9, 10 to like 5, 6. And now AEG is... 3,4?

This review was great - very balanced and fair, and you did a good job pointing out the good and bad of AEG and provide reason as to why, on its own, it's not as bad as one might think. From the perspective of a Thomas fan though, I think the reason why the reboot is so hated, particularly by fans of the original show, is because Mattel markets AEG as Thomas when it is absolutely not Thomas, because the core appeal of the realism - including how complex and interesting the characters are - is just gone. It started with BWBA and was then exacerbated in AEG. It feels like Mattel has intentionally bastardised the show's legacy and fandom just to make way for this cookie-cutter reboot, which is so disrespectful to the Rev. Wilbert Awdry, the original source material and those who loved it for what is was, and that hurts.

This is a pitty. I understand that the original method of making it with real models become to expensive.
But what they could have done could be to make high resolution 3D scans of not just the roalingstock but also all the landscapes. (well, the one that is still around) and render the series the same way as the lego movie. Ultra realsitic 3D. I bet most people could not tell the diffrance between ultra realistic 3D and real models.
While I didn't go near the reboot myself (I just cannot bare looking at the animation - like I know Sodor is meant to be a brightly place, but not this bright here). However, it's each our own opinions and I'm perfectly fine for anyone who may enjoy it.
I guess the only good thing I like is how Neil Crone and Eddie Glen from Magic Railroad came back (only Neil Crone reprising his role of Gordon while Eddie Glen did Toby - both of which for the US dub given that both productions were recorded in Canada alongside Shining Time Station and the CGI Series). Also, given the news of Duck coming back to the show, I wonder if they would get Kevin Frank or another Total Drama actor to voice him).

I never liked the new reboot of all Engines Go ever since it was announced back in 2021 and I still don’t watch it today it has lost all the charm and appeal that the original series represented and is insulting to the memory of the Rev W Awdrys timeless stories about a little blue tank engine and his many friends working together to be really useful engines on the fictional island of Sodor that still continues to inspire fans both young and old to this day and were a huge part of my childhood and I that’s why I will continue reading the Rev W Awdrys books and rewatch the classic model series made by Britt Allcroft and narrated by Sir Ringo Starr and the late Michel Angelis 👍❤️

I actually never watch all engines go but i did like watch 3 episodes but mostly half of the episode to where it's bout to end which shows how much i don't care about this reboot however i watched a episode that had in the title rusty i thought rusty was gonna come back but instead it was a disappointment, the episode actually was talking about a item named rusty that diesel has after that i couldn't follow the rest of the episode but i was still watching i just couldn't follow the plot due to how disappointed i was. I'm also planning to make a vid bout how to fix all engines go. From what we all see the big problem here is the show being unrealistic maybe if they had brought back some of the old crew members it could have been better or instead of a thomas reboot (that would make fans sad or idk) they could have make a show for big tim or a chuggington reboot. I, for one, am conflicted. I think it WOULD be a good show, because I like the acting and animation, but it's got the Thomas name attached to it. This isn't Thomas. If they were original and just ended the series with dignity, I wouldn't be so conflicted
