  • I had a hard time shifting my truck into park. After a while it wouldn't go all the way into park. Also I had to start the truck in the nuetral position. After searching online for a while I found a way to fix the truck for free using a screw driver to tighten 2 torx screws. Hope this video helps someone out there. I'm not a mechanic, just a regular do it yourselfer.

This worked great for my 2000 Ford F150. Before I saw this video I thought I had a stretched cable or something worse. All I had to do was lie on the floorboard and shine a light to the top, and there I saw the silver bracket with two screws. I could hand tighten both of them a lot, and then finished up with a torx. That did it, and I didn't need to adjust anything else, and it also didn't require removing anything from the dash. Five minutes total, and that included finding a flashlight. I had no idea, but what a simple fix to a shifter that won't set right and makes it hard to start. Thank you!

this fixed my 2002 Ford Expedition rolling out of park on a slight incline. I also adjusted the shift indicator while I was at it. Great video. It took longer to watch the video than it did to fix the problem.

OMG! I dont know who you are but I want to adopt you as my new brother. You have no idea what you have just done for me. I own a 1998 Lincoln Navigator and Approx. 2 weeks ago Im leaving the bar to go home and my truck wouldnt start. I checked everything but nothing worked. I then prayed (LOL) and thought of putting it in nuetral and it work. Over the course of time (up until now) the issue worsened. I was scared that i would have to replace the transmission or something else expensive. Anyhow, I knew it wasnt the transmission because when the truck drove it drove great (no slipping). So I decided to do something I should have done weeks ago.....GOOGLE IT! And there you were. First thing that popped up was your video. Now Im here at work, first one to get and Im watching your video in complete awe and joy. I decided to run out the truck and in less than 2 minutes I fixed my problem. It actually took me longer to get under the console and locate the screws but once I did it was a matter of seconds. Dude, I owe you sooooooooooooo much. Im a single father trying to save money to start a business so I didnt want to be trapped into purchasing another vehicle or a big repair bill. My Navigator and I have been through alot and its been paid off for years. Its going to run with me until it says it cant go anymore. Seriously, I dont know you but I thank you graciously.

Dude.. I can't thank you enough for this video. Truck wasn't shifting into park and the overall shifting was very sloppy. Followed your instructions and everything is working perfectly, shifts like a dream. Also, the bolts that are being tightened are torx head bolts and the bit needed is a T-30. Thanks again for the help!

I was extremely stressed about this exact same situation on my 2002 ford e150 xl van.
I had an appointment next week to have a new steering column put in because the tranny mechanic said it was either the linkage or the steering column. He qouted me @ starting price of $550 including parts and labor.
I watched this vid i decided it was at least worth a try.
I fixed it and wanted to say thank you for taking the time to upload it and save me $550. You saved the day & it means the world to me.

Perfectly explained and your lighting and Camera did a superb job of showing the adjustment of the shift pointer and why the shifter itself becomes loose over time. Your viewing audience may want to put a small amount of loctite blue or red on the loose screws before they tighten them. No need to take them completely out, just a couple of drops on the exposed threads will do.
    Thanks again,

I have a 2001 F150 and was experiencing this problem, brought it the dealership they said that it was the PAS module, they claimed it was fried, and wanted $600USD for the module and $300 in labour. I decided to bring it to a friend that worked on transmission s. We explored under the dash and checked everything related to the steering column, discovered the bolts you showed, well sure enough mine were loose. Once tightened, problem gone. Thank you sharing, I should have made a video and shared the solution to the problem with everyone.

I experienced this same issue recently. The mechanic told me I would need to change the cable because it was stretched. I found this video and was able to tighten the two torx screws and the problem was resolved. No adjustment was necessary and everything now works properly and is aligned. Thanks for posting for those of us who hate spending money that isn't necessary.

Thank you so much. My wife drives this truck daily. 1997 F150 was difficult going into Park and sloppy going through the gears. There also was a torx T30 bolt in the floorboard I found and I did not have a clue where it came from. The head was round and a T30 bit fit it perfectly. After finding this video online it took me about 10 minutes to find and fix the problem. Again, Thank You So Much!!!!!!! You definitely saved quite a few people a good amount of money. I just accepted a job across town that starts next week and I wasn't sure I would have a reliable mode of transportation. First off I want to say Thank you HoodJob4u for taking the time to show us this repair. We would put our 2001 Navigator in park and all of a sudden it would roll forward OR backward making a clicking sound and we swore it was either steering colum or transmission issues. I went to google to type in the symptoms and your video came up in a forum and saved us a fortune. We were literally about to call the truck a loss because we thought it may have been major transmission issues. This completely fixed the problem and everything is working 100%. Our screws were way way looser than yours but thankfully still there. Now they are super tight. I am now going to check my 1999 Ford F150 as well even though it is not giving me problems yet. I am pretty sure those may be loose too.

Well like everyone else, the thought of rebuilding my transmission crossed my mind and after such the simple fix you showed here, I can't help but wonder how many people got taken to the cleaners by those unscrupulous service stations telling them all the new parts needed to fix this problem. thanks man my f 150 is a 2001 so a bit different of a set up I assumed I either had to climb under the truck to adjust a cable before I take the parking pin out or rip the dash all apart and all I had to do was just tightens the two screws no cable adjustment needed saved me alot of time

Thanks, my truck had the same problem, hardly could get it into park, and I fixed the shift indicator! I always thought I would have to take out the whole dashboard but no, the fixing was easy!

Awesome video. Your video helped me ID why my F150 gear indicator would not moved when I changed gears. The problem was the white mount gear adjuster was broken. I went to Autozone and bought the white mount for the gear adjuster. Problem solved for $13 and 30 minutes of my time.

Same thing happened to me today. Called ford and they want $117 for the part and I'm not going to pay that price just so I can have something that says "motorcraft". What's the name of the part you got?

Thank you SO MUCH for this video!!! I've spent months driving my truck trying to force it into park. I thought I was going to have to take it to the shop and spend hundreds to get it fixed. Was able to fix it myself in minutes and it works like new! I'd like thus video 100 times if I could!

Thanks for the video! This was exactly what was wrong with my 98 F-150. My truck is now going into park and the shifter feels way smoother.

wow. Thanks. It literally took me 5 minutes to tighten those screws. I used the T25 bit driver. not sure if that is the exact size but it worked. I had a little problem spinning the little Wheel thing that is supposed to change the length of the wire but I'm not as concerned with everything lining up, so much as I am the truck staying in park and not rolling

Glad I could help. The crazy thing is I'm sure the tranny mechanic knew it was a quick fix. I guarantee you if you would have brought your van in, he would NOT have said "Hey, never mind $550. Just give me $20 for the quick fix."

Thank you, this video worked for our situation. T-27 is the screwdriver I used. I had it for working on my Fusion, it is a special size and looks like it may be a common thing for Ford. I'm not a mechanic though, just what I have experienced.

Wow thank you so much for the video. This is a huge help. I have a family of ford owners and I knew if it wouldn't start to put my key in the ignition and take it out of park and put it back in but it is taking a couple of tries. I will definitely do this this afternoon
