    In this episode, we are addressing a Seagate hard drive that ceased spinning due to a significant power surge. The client brought the drive to us after another local shop attempted data recovery. However, they were informed that the issue extended beyond the circuit board, requiring more extensive and serious intervention. Upon initial inspection, we identified a problem with the 5-volt power rail, which was promptly resolved by bypassing it. Despite this fix, the drive failed to initialize properly. Further diagnostics revealed that the EEPROM content belonged to a different hard drive.
    Fortunately, we successfully retrieved all donor units involved in previous recovery attempts, locating the original ROM chip. When the field hard drive was paired with the original ROM and a functioning printed circuit board, it initially spun up but eventually produced clicking sounds. Clicking after the bar search indicated potential damage to the preamplifier attached to the head assembly. A damaged preamplifier obstructs data access.
    To regain access to the data, we needed to replace the field head assembly to which the preamplifier is affixed. The condition of the preamplifier can be verified using a multimeter. By switching the multimeter to resistance mode and checking the pins leading to the preamp, it's possible to determine if the preamp is faulty. In our case, the readings from the field drive differed from those of the properly functioning drive. Data recovery became feasible once we replaced the head assembly with a compatible donor unit featuring a matching preamp.

    The Wiha tools are very nice tools indeed. Would have liked to see the rest of the recovery-proces. It's so cool how you do it.

    Thanks for your very good video and thanks for your tools list. Very usefull. The one thing that you can upgrade on your video is the blower noise when soldering. It can be boring on long video... Anyway, very good work. Please continue to share your know-how.

      It's too much extra work to do anything with it. These videos are as time consuming as they are. Remember, my main gig is not video making. It's the recovery itself haha

    Is that really a resistor or an inductor on the 5V rail? Looks a lot like an inductor (people also call it ferrite or coil, despite it not being a coil - coil is a spiral physical format).

  • @ZomB1986
    @ZomB1986 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Those components next to the connector are not resistors but "beads" (small-value inductors)
    You don't have to particularly praise Wiha for having such a 4mm swappable bit set. There are a dime a dozen wherever you look, and I have an 11 year old no-name brand case here that I use a lot and still doesn't show any signs of wear.

      I guess I overlooked that it's an indicator. Most of the time I see 0ohm resistors on most boards. Whatever they are, they fail same way after TVS goes

  • @dovkedar

    How do you know the resistors what their resistance is because I think they are not listed on the printed circuit and the diode is not listed either, is it possible to connect normal diodes and resistors? What is the power that can go through them? Thanks

    take'n that diode out of circut ..to stop the short ..i have watched many hours of tv and radio repair same test tech but on a micro level ..wild to see the head's replaced on the last video was something...it all started in the 70's head crashes on huge platter drives ..they try to rubild those heads as well ..our grandparents were deep into tech even then ..

    Usually bits are held in with a magnet. Do you worry about data getting damaged for screwdrivers that use magnets?

    Why is it OK to eliminate a diode?

    • @orange11squares
      @orange11squares Před 8 měsíci

      it's a protection diode, it's like removing a bodyguard from a shop, the shop will still work, clients (data) will still come in.
      But if that bodyguard is drunk (defective diode) then the clients will not come to the shop, the shop (HDD) will not work.

    i have a 4tb WD drive that won't spin up. thought it was the PCB so ordered a new one, but it still doesn't spin up. i don't have data on it, to recover, so at this point it's just a 'can i do it'... there is no noise when it's connected, i checked the cable with another drive and the heads aren't parked on the disk. anything i can do? it's already buggered, so not like i can make it MORE not working! thanks for any help. btw, what is with WD drives. i have seagates that last for years and years, but wd drives, either the drive or the usb connectors seem to sh*t the bed within a couple years.
