Black Dynamite: The Greatest Modern Comedy No One Has Seen

- This is my video explaining why Black Dynamite is the funniest and best parody movie ever made. Because while few films can say they’re the best in their genre, Black Dynamite is easily one of them. A parody of blaxploitation films from the ‘70s, Black Dynamite knows its source material so well that it almost becomes what it’s parodying.
But why do other parody movies miss the mark and what is about Black Dynamite that makes it the best one?
This is my analysis of the great film and an appreciation of a comedy that deserves to be seen by more people.

• Black Dynamite (2009) ...
What is Black Dynamite?
Black Dynamite is a 2009 American blaxploitation action comedy film starring Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, and Salli Richardson. The film was directed by Scott Sanders and co-written by White, Sanders, and Byron Minns, who also co-stars.
The plot centers on former CIA agent Black Dynamite, who must avenge his brother's death while cleaning the streets of a new drug that is ravaging the community. The film is a parody of and homage to the blaxploitation genre and its era. It had a trailer and funding even before a script was written. Black Dynamite was shot in 20 days in Super 16 format. The film was released in the United States on October 16, 2009, for only two weeks (with an "official" premiere at the Toronto After Dark film festival) and was well-received by critics. It was released on home video on February 16, 2010.
Michael Jai White originally thought of the idea for Black Dynamite around April 2006, while listening to James Brown's "Super Bad". White had also held blaxploitation movie parties where he picked up the "funny inconsistencies" in the films. White rented costumes, photographed himself, and showed it to Sanders who was attracted to the idea. The same blue costume on White's photograph was used in the final scene of the film.
The original trailer was recorded even before the film went into production in order to raise money. It incorporated scenes from old blaxploitation movies with old voice-overs from Adolph Caesar. The trailer was shot on Super 8 mm film for around $500[6] and contained numerous cultural references that placed the film in the 1970s, such as referring to the star of the film as a Baltimore Colts running back (the Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984) and marveling at Black Dynamite's "five thousand dollar car" and "hundred dollar suit". White and Sanders showed it to Jon Steingart, who told them "Oh my God. Okay, we can raise the money for this."
Once financing was secured, writing the script took about three weeks. During the writing process, Minns's almost "encyclopedic knowledge" of blaxploitation helped them produce the script more quickly.
Cinematographer Shawn Maurer shot Black Dynamite on Super 16 Color Reversal Kodak film stock to get the high contrast and saturated look common in many low-budget Blaxploitation films of the 1970s. The film was then converted to digital for editing. The filmmakers supplemented their shoot with period stock footage from Sony Pictures Stock Footage, using films such as Missing in Action, Charlie's Angels, and Police Woman. Black Dynamite was shot in the Leimert Park and Angeles Vista sections of Los Angeles over twenty days, with several green-screen days and one reshoot day. The film had such a low budget that they had to "think in the same ways that they had to think" in the classic blaxploitation movies.
As an homage to the low production values and "one take only" style of blaxploitation films, many filming errors were done on purpose. For example, in one scene where Black Dynamite stands up from his desk, a red boom microphone appears above his head (which was common in Rudy Ray Moore films, such as Dolemite). Some of the actors recite their stage directions before their intended dialogue (In one scene, an actor verbalizes the stage direction "the militants turn startled" and continues on saying the scripted dialogue "How did you get in here?").
And if you’re still reading this - hello.

3:35 is the single most greatest scene of all movies ever
how good
What about 5:41 ?
@@thelewis2898 That look on Black Dynamite's face at the end laid me out. I always liked the "I threw that sh*t before i entered the room!" boomerang gag. As with all of this movie: Delivery is key. Put this movie in the hands of Friedberg and Seltzer and they'd kill the humor.
@@thelewis2898 I love those moments in the movies where he looses his cool.
jeeesssss
"Sarcastically I'm in charge" is one of the greatest lines ever spoken on film
Idk “get your hands off the presidential dinnerware you moon cricket!” was pretty good.
"The militants turn startled."

“But black dynamite, I sell drugs in the community”
They meant to make a parody of Blaxploitation, but wound up making the BEST Blaxploitation movie of all time
100%
The scene in the diner, where Black Dynamite and the other brothas uncover the whole Anaconda malt liquor conspiracy, is one of the greatest scenes of absurdist humor ever.
That is some Monty Python level shit and it gets even more funny the more times you watch it.
easily one of my favourite scenes from the movie
The way the scene started was definitely absurd. But, if you look a little deeper, you can kind of connect the dots and follow along, making the scene both hilarious and somewhat logical. Black Dynamite just happened to tap into the Vulcan.
Seems like it's a sideways to the 1960s Batman show and the crazy non-sequiter logic Batman and Robin would use to decipher clues... though in this movie it goes on about 5 minutes longer than the typical Batman 'detectiving' scene.
So glad someone gave the credit that Black Dynamite deserves. Also Michael Jai White is awesome.
David Okinsky such a great film that sadly not many know about
As a person who grew up fascinated with Blaxploitation films, Black Dynamite was a dream come true. It's genre perfection.
Genre perfection is a great way to put it
The animated series was also brilliant. Beautifully animated and so funny.
Yeah I'm a big fan of the animated series. Was thinking of doing a video on it. Reminds me of the Boondocks, have you seen it?
@@motioninart I love boondocks. I’ll check out the animated series
That's a clever usage of credits.
took me so long
Black Dynamite is one of the most underrated comedy films of all time. It is a work of unabashed genius.
The movie does lose its subtlety during the fight at the end but all through the rest of the movie, its aim is dead on and I agree with your praise of this movie. There are gags so subtle that many viewers miss it, like the flashback images in Vietnam being different from the main character's description of the scene. More people need to see this movie. I also appreciate you pointing out the trend of awful parody movies that somehow hooked young audiences and made them believe pop culture references, many of the times verbally underlining the references, sans humorous or clever writing were the high watermarks of movie parodies.
agreed. the movie loses it somewhat in the last 20 minutes or so but it did give us doctor wu's arm being chopped off by a boomerang and those 20 minutes alone are still better than any of those awful parody movies. I wish younger audiences knew more about Black Dynamite than those mainstream "films"
that's part of the parody, too, though, the over-the-top shift in silly action. that it feels different from the rest of the movie is also what makes it 'right,' even if it doesn't quite maintain the perfection up to that point. the last shot of him with the gun and women at his feet, though, is pure wonder.
there's still enough there to make it amazing. the only shot that rather took me out of the movie was the helicopter exploding scene, it always looked way too modern to me. i agree, the parody becomes far more obvious, though, like the cheap sets.
@@motioninart The Kung Fu Island sequence is pretty great because it's basically a genre switch out of nowhere, that relies on stock footage and goes nowhere. The trope being the Big Lipped Alligator moment, and feeling so out of place is much of the point.
The last 20 minutes did give us Richard Nixon using nunchucks so
This movie achieves all of its goals, and does it so well it rivals any Academy Award winner. Authentic, funny, thoughtful, great sets, perfect timing, incredible music, great pacing, tasty script, correct costumes and a formidable cast. WOW, one of my favorites.
DYNOMITE
..DYNOMITE
Black Dynamite is like the best of the early Mel Brooks spoofs. It combines surreal and incredible humor with a startlingly accurate recreation of the visual look and feel of what’s its parodying
agreed. personally, I think Mel Brooks doesn't even compare to this film and the only thing that comes close is Young Frankenstein which is more to do with Gene Wilder. Blazing Saddles could also be up there.
BD is great. if you've never seen an actual Blaxploitation movie you wouldn't even know this was made in 2009, or that it was as parody!
easily one of my top five comedies of all time
you need to be aware of those movies and production values to appreciate it, though. there are so many jokes about bad production gaffes you have to watch the movies repeatedly, and still not notice them all.
I love 70's movies. When I saw Black Dynomite I was catching every reference. One was from Grease, another was from Billy Jack. These folks really knew what they were doing.
They really were
I was so high when I watched this I remember I was mad I never seen it thinking it was 40 years old till I started seeing the actors😂 I never laughed so hard at a movie before in my life definitely slept on
it's a shame not many more people know about it
Recently showed my friend Black Dynamite (as more people should watch this film) and he loved it. I think the last 20 minutes is absolutely over the top, but I think it's actually earned. Throughout the entire film, there's so many subtle nods and jokes you don't know would be intentional unless you've seen enough 70's schlock. So by the time everything goes off the rails in the finale, you're kinda already invested an in it for the ride.
Also it gave us Nunchuck Kung-Fu Richard Nixon as the final boss and that will always be my favorite Nixon.
I didn't know it was a parody movie until i introduced it to my family, my dad looked it up and was like "it's from 2009...".
I genuinely thought it was just a really funny 70's flick.
“Sarcastically I’m in charge”
Black Dynamite is hands down the funniest movie of all time, and I really don't say that lightly. It's a genuine work of art and is deserving of preservation in the National Film Registry
One of the most underrated movies of all time. Near perfect homage to Blaxploitation movies, lovingly crafted. With just enough of a nod to the Zucker Brothers, as well. Brilliant.
Rewatched this recently, forgot how funny it was! I love that scene where Black Dynamite is chasing the character Cream Corn, and he's purposefully making sure he's knocking the obstructions over
Hahahaa I love that montage
You should have use three words. Black dynamite, fool.
Jorge Hernandez I forgot to say fool but I did pimp slamp them afterwards

I seriously thought that Black Dynamite was an old film the first time I saw it.
The first time I saw this movie it was 2012 and me and a bunch of my friends were hanging out and it was like midnight and we turned the tv to G4 wondering why there was a 70s movie playing. Then when I saw Michael jai white all hell broke loose. Probably the most pleasant surprise ever
Love this story haha. Have you seen the animated series?
@@motioninart yes I have!
Black Dynamite was the last movie I saw that made me laugh so hard it hurt. Goes to show how few good comedies are made these days.
Fantastic movie
I feel so blessed to have seen this in a theater. This introduced me to Adrian Young and his stellar soundtrack. So many memories from this.
Part if the reason they were so successful at imitating blaxploitation is bc they studied it and used a lot of vintage everything to have it be as authentic as possible
It's definitely one of my favorite parodies that stand on its own
Agreed. The filmmakers were masters of their craft and history of cinema when they made this.
I just watched this CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE last week and I am ashamed it took so long for me to watch it…I’m pretty sure that if I were to watch this movie high, I would literally die laughing.
It’s fantastic. Favourite moment?
It's a shame no one mentioned the Theme song, whoever composed it is a musical genius!

@4:12.... William T. Michelson.
It’s hilarious because that actors name is Mykelti Williamson. 😂🤣😂
Byron Minns's character was based off Rudy Ray Moore from Dolemite. He got Rudy's voice. Lol.
Hahaha amazing
He even did the whole trailer the way Dolemite would be the narrator on his own trailers!!
It is a crime against humanity that this wasn't a huge hit. Brilliant.
As a foreigner, I've watched this movie without being aware of source materials. And I loved it.
It was until recently I've discovered it was a parody (and a good parody) of other stuff, I was even more amazed.
YO!! Ain't you forgetting another great parody Blaxploitain movie "IM GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA!!" From the Waynas Brothers. Now That's is one seriously funny movie. Junior from London 😂😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Deadass, I enjoyed the animated series a lot and until today I had NO IDEA it was based on a movie
"Excuse me brothers"
"The militants turned, startled. This is private. How'd you get in here?"
" I .. walked in."
2:37 causes involuntary reflex laughter
so good
This is the Austin Powers of blaxploitation movies. Absolutely hysterical.
I love that. Great way of putting it. Even better than Austin Powers
Thanks for the great suggestion & analysis!!!
No problem!
Funniest parody since Naked Gun. It's right up there.
Definitely
I honestly thought it was a HD 70s movie until the guy from Person of Interest showed up.
how good haha
Saw this immediately when it came out because of Michael Jai White. Wasn't disappointed at all. Can't wait for his new movie, The Outlaw Johnny Black
Same. So good
This needs a sequel NOW!
*Anaconda Malt Liquor* makes an appearance in the Netflix movie "They Cloned Tyrone", another great half-patody half blaxploitation flick starring John Boyega, Jamie Foxx and Teeyonah Parris.
BD is brilliant, i love that movie so much. the thing is you need *some* background in the real genre to appreciate it, whereas today's parodies just tap into pop cultural references. also, it's two different kinds of comedy, the parody of film itself versus a more absurd style.
the performances are incredibly important -- it takes a good actor to play it straight, and even play a bad actor.
you literally make such good content, and deserve so many more followers

Why Dolemite? While it is classified as a black-ploitation film, and was made in the 70s, it was made indie by the lead comedian, unlike other black-ploitation films which made to exploit black culture for revenue by larger companies. Another good film to have used would have been Black Samurai, with Jim Kelly. Check that trailer out! :D
