Think everyone was fully aware of what they were doing it was the running joke of the show. I look at it that both were so comfortable and not uncomfortable about sexuality that they could show those strong feelings that ppl wanted for eachother without actually changing their sexual preferences. They are definitely mans man meaning they are not gay but feel openly comfortable with expressing their feelings for eachother.
I think they are fully aware of it i don't think they watch it or read it though. The show is also fully aware

Absolutely hilarious! Have watched several times now, gets funnier every time. :P Would love to see one done with scenes from the newest seasons.
