    This is a rare version of "Pigs on the Wing" featuring the widely-known two parts bridged by a guest guitar solo by Floyd associate Snowy White. It was recorded specifically for the 8-Track American and British releases, to suit the nature of the medium itself, which plays on an endless loop if you let it. It has otherwise been unobtainable since the death of the format. For more information see: blindseesall.bl...

    I’m not sure why this made me tear up a little. Man do I miss the 70s. Those were some of the best days of my life. I was only a young kid, but I remember my old 8-track player and all the great music that went along with it. I guess sentimentality never gets you anywhere.

      Sentimentality is the thing that will get you back to those days, even if its just a moment. And as far as the tearing up goes, I figure it will happen to anyone whos an avid fan of theirs. Hearing this secret solo is kind of like coming across a memory that you never knew you experienced. Beautiful pieces like this will do that to you ♥
      I'm glad their music is still hitting us in the emotions the way they did 50 years ago!

      When I was 14, I found an old 8 track car system in a box and mounted it to the wall of my bedroom with a DC converter to power it. I used two old car speakers mounted on both sides of the bedroom. 45 years later, I still imagine some of the track changes in the middle of some songs.

    I had a good friend of mine back in the 70s who was a huge fan of Pink Floyd, and I use to hang out over his house and listen to Pink Floyd for hours, he knew everything about Pink Floyd, well I remember listening to this on 8 track and then hearing it without this solo on the radio one day, and as I'm listening, I started noticing something seemed different but I couldn't put my finger on it, well I ended up getting that album and finally realized what was different, so I showed it to my friend who was the huge Pink Floyd fan and when he found out it was someone else doing the solo he took that 8 track and put it in the street and ran over it, he couldn't except someone else playing the solo that wasn't in Pink Floyed

      @@davidgilmore559 Not quite. What happened was, David Gilmour called up Snowy and offered him the gig as onstage ancillary guitarist/bassist. So Snowy goes down to Britannia Row studio, where the band was working. And Snowy just happened to walk in, when they had somehow accidentally erased one of Gilmour's guitar solos. So there was this really tense vibe going on, and Snowy walked into that. So Dave and Snowy talked about what Snowy was going to have to do, etc. And then Roger says, "Since you're here, why don't we record something?" and that's when they recorded this version of Pigs On The Wing.

    Back in the early to mid 70s, there were innumerable homegrown labels bootlegging 8-tracks, selling like hotcakes at flea markets in every small town to anyone with an 8-track player. Sometimes you might be lucky enough to spot "Not by original artists" in small print on the outer packaging. Incorrectly, some of us, at the time, may have heard this as a fake session guitarist. I can see how in making two parts that the short solo might have interfered with the buildup to the first solo in 'Dogs' but as one long track it not only worked, but was necessary for a longer and closer to full length song. As for having it in a 'part II' if it wasn't written later after the release of the record with 'Sheep' which sort of concludes the electric part of the album. If it was in existence before mastering it could have possibly have fit if it was made an acoustic solo. Still my favorite album which is normally a hard decision when there are at least 3 LP's tied for my second favorite.

Notice how much the music drops out and comes back and also notice the apparent lack of frequency response as well as (only if you have a good ear mind you) the background tape hiss. Now if you where to play the LP vinyl record of this same track on this same system, you wouldn't want the inferior sound of what this produces.

    Do all 8-tracks of this album have this version on it? I just got a copy today, and it does have the guitar solo on it, but that blog post made it sound like not all copies of the 8-Track had this version on it.

      Cartoonyworld109 I can verify that not ALL versions do, since I bought a red tape produced by Columbia in Canada without it before purchasing the British release that included it. I'd guess (not sure) that a telling factor would be whether any given release has "Pigs on the Wing" listed as a single track or in two parts. The Canadian version that I bought, for instance, has Pts. 1 and 2 of "Pigs on the Wing" listed separately; so do the Spanish and Italian 8-tracks made by Harvest and the Australian tape made by CBS. The British cart (Harvest 8X-SHVL 815) has "Pigs on a Wing" listed as one track, and as heard above, includes the solo. Though I don't have the American cart (Columbia JCA 34474), it looks like it has "Pigs on the Wing" listed as a single track, so I suspect it includes the solo as well. Maybe that's the one you bought?

    I'm confused...if the solo was put between part one and part two, how does it matter with the loop thing, unless part two is followed by the solo at the end, followed by part one at the start again...unless I'm missing something, the medium is irrelevant, surely?

    • @JudahMirvish
      @JudahMirvish  Před 9 lety +2

      slumpytube The 8-track version begins with Part 2, which is linked to Part 1 directly by the solo. I think you're right in arguing that the different format need not have led to any change in the music, but as it happened, it did -- the solo certainly wouldn't exist if Roger Waters hadn't been looking to loop the music for the 8-track

    • @mr2ew
      @mr2ew Před 6 lety +1

      Sean you are the confused one! This version doesn't begin with Part 2!!! It begins with Part 1 and then the solo bridges it to Part 2!!! And the whole thing is at the beginning of Track 1??? I don't get it at all? It doesn't have anything to do with the looping except maybe Roger didn't want Part 1 to ever follow Part 2 so he put them together in the right order at the beginning of the album. Thanks for posting it though, I think it sounds pretty good, especially since it seems like you taped it from the speakers right, otherwize I wouldn't be hearing you put in the tape at the beginning of the video right?

    • @JudahMirvish
      @JudahMirvish  Před 2 lety +2

      That's right! Pigs on the Wing is combined, with the usual Part 1 being directly bridged to Part 2 by the solo, while Dogs and Pigs are both broken up into 2 parts due to space limitations. The overall structure of the cassette is as follows:
      Program 1: Pigs on the Wing (Pt. 1/Solo/Pt. 2), Dogs
      Program 2: Dogs (conclusion), Pigs
      Program 3: Pigs (Conclusion)
      Program 4: Sheep

    • @patricksommer3971

      The full story is:
      Snowy White has heard that the band was searching for a live guitarist, so he came to the studio. They were just recording that song and had accidently deleted Gilmours solo. So they told Snowy “Hey, if you want the job, show that you can play. Here's a song, listen to it and play a solo over it“. And that solo actually made it on the UK and US Versions of the 8-Track Album.

    I'm sorry. The fidelity is way to good to be from an 8 track. They lack the high end and are full of tape hiss. Plus the meters are not moving in the right way. What is the real source here? It is not an 8 track.

    • @JudahMirvish
      @JudahMirvish  Před rokem

      It's from the 8 track! This is an old video by now, but my memory is that this was converted to mp3 directly though line out and that I then replaced the room audio in my cell phone recorded video with the directly recorded audio. I'm genuinely surprised to hear someone say it sounds good -- the high end is fair but I think the hiss is present for sure 🤷‍♂️
      So far as I know it's been released on the Snowy White greatest hits CD, but that's OOP and I'm sure you'll agree this is well below CD sound quality. Neither the meters nor the track changing mechanism on my player work properly but I think it sounds pretty good in person for what it is
