    Nathan, as a 27 year high school chemistry / AP Chemistry teacher, I was impressed by your problem solving when it came to scaling your application rate. You utilized a basic concept I constantly stress to students. Increasing a sample size reduces experimental / measurement error. 👍. Three minute calibration versus one minute was a good call.

    Concrete. Is my vote.
    Asphalt is an annual maintenance head ache. And if you don’t get a heavy enough duty design it will be littered with puddles.

    Design for the pads. Is more your need for flat spots. To park cars. To entertain. To bounce a basketball.
    1” rise in 4 feet is fairly flat for above uses.
    1” in 2 feet will drain well.
    Just give yourself some of that 1:4 near the house.

    100% agree with keeping everything inside when able to. You missed an opportunity to save some sweet corn this summer. Raccoons need to be controlled there are too many on the landscape.

    Have your ever thought about growing seed beans for golden harvest or really any seed company ?

    • @BorderViewFarms
      @BorderViewFarms  Před rokem +1

      Not really. The processor for Golden Harvest is 2 hours away so it would be a bit of a haul. There's a Pioneer plant closer but I'm not really interested.

  • @w056007568

    Just a further question/clarification about seed rates for the beans (and any other crop in fact!) do you plant with a target plant population per square meter / yard in mind? If so do you tweak the seed rate to achieve the population target for any of the crops relative to seed size?
    I was thinking about the potential initial germination and establishment vigour in view of your comments on big seed versus small seed in this respect.

    • @BorderViewFarms
      @BorderViewFarms  Před rokem +2

      We have a target seed per acre rate. Could be anywhere from 120,000 to 180,000. Our planter does a good job singulating seeds so seed size dosent affect it much
      If you were using a drill you would have to adjust for every seed size to maintain the correct population

    Do different soybean hybrids have any specific uses? Example: Would a specific hybrid be favored for food production (soy sauce??) versus animal feed? Could a smaller bean hybrid bring a premium price if marketed for a specific use? Fewer bushels, but more per bushel.

    • @BorderViewFarms
      @BorderViewFarms  Před rokem +3

      Couple things, beans are not hybrids, corn is, sometimes I say the wrong thing. A bushel is 60 pounds no matter how big or small the beans are or how much room they take up. There aren't differences in uses of the beans we grow however there are specialty soybeans with specific uses, food grade, special oil content, clear helium, tofu, etc.

    • @w056007568
      @w056007568 Před rokem +1

      @@BorderViewFarms
      Another technical error surely Nathan! a bushel is specifically a measurement of volume (64 US Pints or 35.2 litres. Your standard for a comparison basis from one sample to others commercially may well be accepted as 60lbs. How are you paid on delivery of this crop? By bushel price or by actual weight delivered?
      The size of the beans in a bushel will result in variation of the contained weight. My point being that there will always be a reduction of beans per bushel as seeds get larger and vice versa as seeds become smaller.

    • @BorderViewFarms
      @BorderViewFarms  Před rokem +3

      @Dan Whiteford No, when dealing with grain, a bushel is measured in weight. Soybeans 1 bushel = 60 pounds. Corn 1 bushel = 56 pounds. When we deliver soybeans assuming 13% or lower moisture, it is net weight / 60 = bushels. It does not matter what the test weight is or the volume. I understand the traditional bushel measurement is a volume but, not when dealing in grain.

      @@BorderViewFarms Thanks for your answer, just hope no offence was caused in the process!!
      I will go back to land area measurement in hectares, yields in Kg per hectare and test weights in Kg per hectolitre.
      Fertiliser applied in Kg of nutrient per hectare and sprays applied in litres per Ha and measured in litres or kilogrammes or fractions of!!!
