Underwater Navigation and using a Compass Underwater while scuba diving can be a bit challenging at first, however, it really isn't as hard as some people may think. It can be intimidating, but with a few simple tips I share in this video, you'll be able to use your compass underwater to navigate without any issues. I teach you how to do an out and back reciprocal, as well as make 90-degree turns to navigate a square pattern. I also break down the various types of compasses, such as wrist-mount compasses, console-mounted compasses, digital / computer compasses, and hand-held compasses. While this isn't a replacement for a class like the PADI Underwater Navigation course, I think you'll find it covers a lot of similar information so you'll be ahead of your classmates if you decide to take the Underwater Navigation Speciality Course.

This is EXACTLY how all agencies should be teaching this. Thank-you
Thanks for the compliment!!
Good show, I like it. January 2024 I passed advanced scuba diving course in Cuba it was with SNSI which is not recognized by PADI in Canada. For underwater navigation I used Perdix it was OK but, when I used compass I can't see other things on display. Next January I'll dive in Dominican Rep in La Romana. It will be with Dresell Divers and I'll take the PADI advanced diver course with them. Today I purchased Suunto SK-8 compass so it will be more handy. Yours video helps to get idea how to use it and understand it. By the way, you have many good tutorial videos. I'm almost 70, but I'm happy from what I'm doing with support form people like you. Thx man.
I’m glad you liked the video and you’re finding them helpful! I love my compass, I think you will too!
That is too bad that the course in Cuba wasn’t recognized. Sorry to hear that! It sounds like a great trip coming up though!
Gracias por la enseñanza, es muy clara y comprensible. Saludos desde Perú.
You are very welcome!
Thank you! I'm getting my Open Water certification soon and my PADI book explains this skill in such a weird way.
No problem!! I’m glad it was helpful!
Good luck on your class!!!!!
I was so stressed about having to do this for my AOW this week, but honestly not turning the bezel and instead just aligning E/S/W for the 90 degree turns is such a game changer. SO much easier 😵 I don't know why I didn't even think of this before. Thank you!
So happy to hear it helped! Let me know how your AOW goes this week!!! You got this! Congrats on furthering your dive education and reply here when you do the navigation portion! This trick saved me SO much time in basic navigation so I'm glad it was an unlock for you 😊
You’ve taught more in this video than my instructor taught in both my AOW navigation and search and recovery courses.
I tried to keep it to basics 😅, maybe I covered too much haha. Thank you for the compliment though (I’ll assume it’s good that you learned a lot from the video!)!!
You should have definitely learned out and back and square patterns in your AOW Nav course. Your instructor didn’t have you do those? 😱
Like, versus what your instructor taught overall???
Far better than what was given during the Nav course. thanks!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
This is the best explanation of how to use a compass in scuba. Enjoyed!
Thanks so much, that’s a huge compliment for me, as that was definitely my hope!
Please feel free to share it with any divers you know 😊
I searched all over youtube about how to use compass while diving last few weeks...cant even get a suitable video for me, suddenly youtube recommend your video to me ! ❤ thanks for your great sharing.
Oh my gosh, I’m sorry I didn’t post it last week! Haha. I’m glad you found it useful and I hope it still serves you well! Share it with your dive buddies if they need an overview too, haha.
Where were you diving last week? Any fun trips? Thanks again for commenting, hope to see you in future videos!
@@CircleHScuba haha! My next dive trip is coming Saturday, Still newbie here starting want to learn about this! Your video came in the right time man! xD
See you in future videos!
Oh awesome!! Have fun on the trip, let me know how it goes!
This is the first video on underwater compass use where I let out a sigh of relief because I finally *understand*. You break up all the steps so nicely and clearly. Excellent and very educational, thank you!
Woohoo!!! Happy it was helpful! Thanks for the comment, 🙌
happy to see a brother of the craft on this hobby.
Only a couple people have noticed, but happy to meet you as well
Although I succeed the PADI navigation specialty I learned a lot from you, Thank you so mucht
You’re welcome! Certification is part of it, but I think continued learning is always important. I’m so happy to hear this helped! Let me know if you have any questions!
Awesome video, thanks!!!
You’re welcome! Any other skills you’d like to see?
You shared this information in person with our AOW group last weekend. I couldn't agree more with your comments around digital. I had to recalibrate multiple times and it's a huge pain to read off the wrist(Perdix compass.) Wish I had followed your method the first time. Thank you for making the video!
Hey!!! Good to see you! Yes, digital is just hard to use and you don’t get the bezel “cheats” that I personally love for basic patterns like 90 degree turns, and the digital compass just doesn’t always seem accurate to me for whatever reason. I LOVE my Perdix but that compass, idk haha.
Thank you for a great well explained lesson on basic use of compass
You are very welcome!
Navigation can be a bit confusing at first. I didn’t quite understand it too well during my open water course. When I took advanced open water in Lake Mohave my instructor had me navigate I believe in a square pattern during my wreck dive. There’s a school bus around 50 ft mark I started off at the school bus navigated in a square pattern and counted my fin kicks and returned back to the school bus and it started to make a bit more sense. Very good video explaining how to do it.
Thanks! Yeah it is something you gotta practice enough to keep up on the skill so it’s not confusion next time you try doing it.
Sounds like a good AOW instructor!
@@CircleHScuba yeah he’s really good instructor he’s a independent instructor for Padi. My lessons have all been one on one vs a big group which I prefer since that gives me more one on one time. I’ve taken a few classes with him Open water, AOW, and drysuit specialty and would like to take the rescue course next to take me to the next level. I know it can be a physically demanding course but well worth it because it makes you a better diver and a better buddy!
@stevenciesiel777 rescue is the most fun I’ve had in a recreational course by far.
Thanks for all the great tip! You Rock🤘
Glad you find them useful!
Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much for the Super Thanks! I’m glad you found the video helpful!
That’s my first ever super thanks! Just…Wow!…..Sincerely thank you for the support! That just made my day.
I love compasses. They're the symbol of adventure.
And I'm guessing no matter how much the earth's magnetic field changes, even if it flips, this compass you used can still be used to navigate. Like it won't become outdated in a decade or 3.
I remember watching a video about plane landing strip numbers. If I remember correctly, the numbers are approximately degrees from magnetic North...
And different airports can have the same number on a strip pointing a different direction from another airport, or what a compass currently says, because, not only they may have rounded up or down, but also magnetic North may have changed since that strip or airport was built. It was a CPG Grey video.
Oh wow that’s interesting. I didn’t know that about airstrips and runways. I do enjoy a good compass though for sure!
Impressive. Your videos are full of knowledge :) Keep up the good work
Thanks!
Thanks for your help
Absolutely, I’m glad you found it helpful
How do you do that scuba gear knot? Love these videos.
The one for the bolt snap is here: czcams.com/video/ffo2-H0BmBM/video.html
I have a knot video here too: czcams.com/video/q7a_GYUBJN8/video.html
Good -
But who dives in straight lines or with 90 degree turns and same number of clicks ?
That's the skills they have you do for a lot of the navigation specialties for various agencies including the one I'm affiliated with.
I'd love to do some advanced nav patterns and such though, anything specific you'd like to see? This one was more so for "basics" and "beginners" that are new to compass nav and just need a few basic concepts down. Hard to make a video that's for everyone so I try to target content based on an audience demographic and sometimes it's useful for more than just "beginners" or "new divers" but other times it may just be for a small group of people (for example I did a video on how to get into cave diving that I don't expect brand new divers necessarily need/care about).
It's great when someone has dropped a piece of gear and you're searching for it......making the square smaller and smaller.
Blue water can be very disorienting and deceiving. Ive been trained in green water and had to surface a few times to get a heading on those blue water dives. Practice practice practice Good vid!
DGX sells a really nice handheld compass at a good price with a 30 degree forgiveness on tilt
Haven’t seen you for awhile, happy to have you back! Haha.
I totally agree, plain open blue water with no references is disorienting. I’ll check into the Dive Gear Express one!
4:26 my dude roasted me 😂😂
Do you have a cheap compass? Lol
@@CircleHScuba guilty
🤣🤣
Hello, can you add Turkish subtitles to the video?
Yes I will right now! I apologize for not having that. Give me 3 minutes and I’ll have it.
Oh there should be turkish subtitles already. Can you check please and let me know? I can redo them if needed.
Thank you🙏
You’re welcome!
