  • The Tiger Hotel was constructed in the 1887 over the creek in a narrow portion of the canyon in Burke Idaho to house mine and mill workers. It survived fires, floods, expansions until it's demise in 1954, no longer of use. It is now considered one of the treasures of the legacy of Burke due to the creek under and railroad through novelty..

Itchy Boots just rode through there on her motorcycle tour and mentioned the hotel, so really great to see the pictures and background thanks.

Yes, saw that, and very interesting it was too. Good to see this further background information. I'm in the UK, and this is a different side to the USA than we get to normally see - and no less interesting for that.

Shades of Itchy Boots, CZcamsr from the Netherlands, who uploaded a video yesterday depicting that town with a brief history. She's a solo rider heading to Alaska on a Honda motorcycle. Over a million subscribers. Warning: Itchy Boots is highly addictive!

My grandfather worked in the Star Mine for 40 years as a gypo miner as did my dad but for a much shorter time. I was raised between Wallace and Burke (Frisco Hill). My mom's family was from Wallace and my granddad worked in the Hecla machine shops. There is no good way to describe Burke Canyon in the late 50's and early 60's when I was growing up. Wild-rough-no rules-live for the moment- might be a way to start. The canyon was very crowded, no room to put another house or structure. The Star Mine would hire high school kids in the summer to clear brush or would put them in the ball mill to find and throw out worn out iron balls used to crush the ore. This gave the kids a few bucks and would keep them out of trouble for a while. All the mine tailings went right into Canyon Creek, which seems unreal in this day and age. Just glad I got to see this part of Idaho history.

@@doobielawson702 Hey! My own family has a fair bit of mining history. My grandfather worked in the livery stable in another silver boom town of Silver City Utah when he was a young kid. Also, his mother's side of the family had 3 relatives killed and 1 survived (although badly hurt) the Scofield coal mine disaster. I was planning a trip out west and this video and Noraly's has got me all worked up to hit some of these sites the next time I'm out that way.

My Father was Born and raised in Burke in the 60s. Lived WAY up canyon and worked at the Star mine after Highschool. Highschool was down the road in Wallace. There was a sunny side of the canyon and a shady side. The shady side was covered in Trees and no one really went up that side, too steep and dark. Sometimes there was snow on the shady side of the canyon well into the summer.

Great information. What year is the (Sanborn?) map? My family genealogy has a cousin of mine, Annie Bergitte Johnson, who was injured when she fell two stories from the burning Tiger Hotel. It doesn't mention the year, but 1923 would be about right.

Was the railroad through the hotel part of the original construction? My grandpa was raised in Burke. He worked in the mines before he went to college. His father and stepfather also worked in the mines. I've been to Burke, Wallace and Nine Mile Cemetery in my genealogy searches.
