    This is the hippest documentary on jazz that I have ever seen. Back around 1978 I was a delivery driver in Los Angeles and Jackie was playing at Shelley’s Man Hole in Hollywood and I could not afford to pay to get in so I stood outside and put my ear to the door and looked in the widow and listened to Jackie. He was in his 50’s at that time and he sounded great and I wanted to wait outside when he would leave the club but I was tired and I I had a long drive home so I split but Jackie will always be one of my favorite jazz musicians

    What makes gil noble such a great jazz interviewer, he's a jazz fan that is knowledgeable and respectful to the music, and those who played it. Jackie McLean was a true giant.

    Just wonderful. Coming from a Jazz Musician who feels the need to give back and KEEP THE FLAME BURNING - for the future generations - this was such a genuine discussion. So many intangibles, nothing staged. Jackie mentions the importance of Music History in the overall Jazz education. Coming up, I was fortunate to take a full-year class "Concepts of Music" which really dove into the origins of Jazz (Rhythm, Cultures, etc). Thanks again!

    So Charlie Parker and other modern music artist back then were basically
    'sampling' music and producing it like hip hop producers in the 80's til
    today.

    • @brucescott4261
      @brucescott4261 Před 3 lety +2

      James Earl Cash ...They were not sampling.

    • @jamesearlcash1758
      @jamesearlcash1758 Před 3 lety +1

      @@brucescott4261 No not technically for obvious reason but
      nonetheless they were replaying other peoples stuff just
      playing it in a way that it wasn't easily recognizable just
      like today with sampling. The only difference is Bird
      played what he was 'sampling' from those classical music
      pieces whereas back in the days of hip hop producers
      were both replaying and sampling records of previously
      popular music. So whether you replay a music piece or
      run it through a sampler the concept is the same, both
      are using other people's music to create theirs.
