Making a talandon or simantron ( percussion instrument )

- Talandon or Simantron is a percussion musical instrument
used in Greek Orthodox monasteries. A monk uses the instrument to call the rest of the brotherhood for prayer in the church or other monastic activities. I made it out of maple.

I was up in Metsovo last year and each night they would ring a giant one of these and it sounded all across town, it was such an enchanting sound! Beautiful work!

Don't know if I would ever make one, but I did get two things from this:
1) The techniques used to make the instrument would be useful for making a wooden paddle for a canoe (or college parties, whatever).
2) That hammer is adorable and is the first thing I am making once I get access to a lathe.

What dimensions did you cut the original plank down to? I don't have a planer and would buy pre-dimensioned lumber.
I think 15-20 mm. Somewhere around there. You don't want it to be too thick.

Monks are very musical :) Most monastic traditions use sound and chant for Kirtan. Orthodox, Tibetan, Vedic, Shinto, Gregorian, Benedictine, Franciscan. It is a beautiful way of praying ॐ
@@ScrapwoodCity I've re-watched several Orthodox Christian semantron vids, and I can't help but think those brothers (and one sister) would be pretty fair shakes as jazz drummers...or even marimba players.

we have such smaller instruments in Bulgarian monasteries.
They are pretty common through out the Orthodox world I guess!
hey, that made me wonder - why didn't they use bells?! maybe you can make one out of wood to hear how it would sound
@@tkzsfen They do. Usually the bells are used to call to prayer later in the day. In my experience the simantron is used primarily to call the monks to the midnight office, and/or to wake them up.
@@tkzsfen These were made when Islamic oppressors took over places with Orthodox Churches and they forbade ringing bells. So they used these instead.

χαχα, βασικά είναι έμπνευση από το ταξίδι στο Άγιον Όρος. Και εννοείται αν κάτι έιναι ξύλινο και βγάζει ήχο μπαίνει στη λίστα των πρότζεκτ. Επίσης άκουσα ότι γενικά τα φτιάχνουν από σφενδάμι. Το κελεμπέκι είναι πολύ κοντά και όντως είναι πάρα πολύ μουσικό ξύλο.Βγάζει σχεδόν νότα με το χτύπημα. Ευχαριστώ αδερφέ

Πως είναι ακριβώς το σήμαντρο δεν ήξερα . Με σένα θα μάθω σίγουρα όλα τα μουσικά όργανα και μη , που υπάρχουν σε αυτή την γη . Φυσικά είναι και ωραίο και ενδιαφέρον . Ασε που ζηλεύω λιγάκι γιατί έχω ξεκινήσει ένα σεμινάριο ξυλογλυπτικής και αναρωτιέμαι πότε θα γίνω Bob ο μάστορας !!!!!
χαχα ευχαριστώ! Καλή δύναμη με την ξυλογλυπτική θέλει κόπο και χρόνο αλλά είναι πολύ δημιουργικό σπορ!
Κάνω προθέρμανση γιατί του χρόνου , πρώτα ο θεός και μετά ο λαός , θα γραφτώ ξυλουργική . Θέλει δουλειά αλλά είναι ωραία και δημιουργικό . Το μόνο αρνητικό είναι ο χώρος γιατί ζω σε πολυκατοικία .
Ναι θέλεις εργαστήριο γιατί το κοπάνημα με τη ματσόλα δε λέει μέσα στο σπίτι. Δεν έχουν σημασία αυτά όμως, ξεκίνα εσύ και τά άλλα θα έρθουν. Κι εγώ μέσα σε διαμέρισμα είχα το πρώτο μου εργαστήριο, μετά με μαγικό τρόπο τα πράγματα δρομολογούνται! :)
