The Best Selonding Balinese Ancient Gamelan (DNA Family Bali)
Selonding gamelan is a traditional Balinese musical instrument that is older than other gamelans that are now popular in the arts and used in traditional and religious ceremonies. This gamelan is a sacred gamelan used to complete religious ceremonies in Bali. The distribution of selonding gamelan in Karangasem Regency can be found in several old villages such as Bugbug, Prasi, Seraya, Tenganan, Pegringsingan, Timbrah, Asak, Bungaya, Ngis, Burdendem, Besakih, and Selat villages. In the context of the traditional village, this selonding gamelan is used to accompany large ceremonial processions such as usaba Dangsil, usaba axis, usaba sri, usaba gig and so on.
Gamelan selonding is made of iron blades that are placed with sufficient locks on the body of the gamelan without resonant blades (resonant bamboo). The sound produced by this instrument is very distinctive and classic, namely the gamelan in the pelog sapta tone (seven tones). Selonding is usually voiced to accompany the implementation of sacred ceremonies with different types of gending.
The word selonding is thought to have come from the words "salon" and "ning" which means a holy place, because judging from its function, it is a gamelan that is sacred or sanctified. Regarding the history of the emergence of gamelan selonding, it is uncertain, but there is a mythology which says that in ancient times the people of Tenganan Pegringsingan heard a roar from the sky and the sound came in waves. In the first wave the sound descends in Bungaya (east of the Tenganan Sea) and the second wave descends in Tenganan Pegringsingan. (Source: Wikipedia)
