  • To a deer hunter, wool is the ultimate performance fabric. It keeps you warm (even when wet) wicks moisture, helps mask odors and is quiet. Follow along as I breakdown how wool functions the way it does, what to look for when purchasing wool clothes and my wool clothes of preference. Enjoy!

    Us Brits 🇬🇧 perfected the process of woollen clothing hundreds of years ago and our Melton boiled wool clothing ruled the world, we seemed to have lost our way in the last 100 years and our wool clothing industry is not what it was, I have Filson, Pendleton and Stormy Kromer products and they are amazing, The USA 🇺🇸 really does rule the world today in boiled wool clothing 👍🏻 Shame Johnson products are difficult to obtain over here 🙁

      I’m pretty fortunate to live only about 45 minutes from Johnson Woolen Mills. That place is literally overwhelming when you walk in. The inventory is huge. Jackets, pants, bibs,hats, Fanny packs, back packs, mittens, gloves, blankets. Etc etc…. It’s crazy the amount of stuff in there. I have to really behave myself because I want everything and could spend a fortune. 🤦🏼‍♂️😂🤣

      Pendleton is, and I don’t get it either, but it’s USA made FABRIC, then sent to China, other Asian countries or Central America for actual MANUFACTURING. So apparently it’s cheaper to take the USA wool, SHIP IT ALL somewhere else, pay THE OTHER COUNTRY to make it, then…PAY TO SHIP THE GARMENTS BACK….Yup, unions are great , priced themselves right out of manufacturing jobs. Atta boy

    Couldn't agree more ! I've got mostly Johnson wool gear , had it since I was 16 (57 now) . It's all in great shape and amazingly still fits !! I'll probably fall apart long before it does .... The one thing you failed to mention , and maybe this is a personal thing , is also the smell of the wool . Whether it's dry or wet , it smells like fall , it smells like hunting season , and , that in itself evokes so many memories from when I was a kid and could smell it on my dad's gear . I couldn't wait until I was old enough to go to deer camp and be "one of the guys" ..... Such great memories . Man I love hunting season 🦌😃... My son now wears his grandfather's hunting gear ! That's longevity , and that's awesome .... Best of luck this year to you and your crew . Create some more memories .......

    My question- As a hiker/backpacker i have been slowly transitioning to Merino for undergarments and synthetics for over garments… mostly for moisture control. Does your type of hunting mostly involve stalking/ walking or do you find wool to be suitable for ling sits? Thanks in advance

    I and a lot of guys in my area (south/central Indiana) are going to wool. What do you do for sent control? Does dry cleaning leave a chemical smell? Will sent control sprays like H.S. Strut or Dead Down Wind and others damage or lessen the performance of wool?

    • @MaineOutdoorEnthusiast
      @MaineOutdoorEnthusiast  Před 7 měsíci

      Nice to hear about the interest in wool! One of the biggest reasons I use wool is it naturally helps control sent. I don’t use any form a sent control beyond wool itself. As far as cleaning goes, it’s pretty much self cleaning. Dirt and debris is shed pretty easy once it dries. Finer wool garments like dress pants and what not I do dry clean, but not my hunting wool.

      That’s a good question. And to be honest, I really don’t wash most of my wool. Wool shirts I will have dry cleaned. But all outerwear I spot clean and that’s about it. Some of my older wool pants I have soaked in water, then allowed them to air dry (but that’s only items I’m not too worried about ruining). I won’t dry clean my wool outerwear. I feel, for the most part wool is pretty much “self-cleaning”.

    • @MaineOutdoorEnthusiast
      @MaineOutdoorEnthusiast  Před rokem +4

      Hi Aaron! I wipe it off when it’s fresh(usually with snow). Wool is pretty good at naturally shedding dirt, debris and is stain resistant. It’s not like other fabrics that absorb liquids easily. As long as the wool doesn’t become “overwhelmed” with a liquid...it wipes off pretty easy.

    how do you wash your wool ?

    • @MaineOutdoorEnthusiast
      @MaineOutdoorEnthusiast  Před rokem +1

      Hi Nick. Wool I wear close to the skin (merino base layers and the such) I wash according to the manufacturers specs which is usually just in the washing machine. More exterior clothing such as jackets and pants require more unique care such as dry clean only and what not. Some say you can wash it with no problems...however, I don't wash my exterior garments. I like to refer to wool as "self cleaning". Wool is pretty stain resistant, doesn't really retain odors. It pretty much takes care of itself. If I get a piece really muddy or dirty I'll spot clean that area and everything is good.

      I have the Northwoods anorak and a zip up jacket from asbell wool. They both are my best wool items, very well made and they have a good nap on the material to keep the warmth in. I have some Day One Camo gear made from wool that's pretty good too, but they no longer make any of their gear in wool unfortunately.

      I hate when I find something I like…only to have a company stop make it. Seems to happen to me a lot. Thanks for watching!
