She deserves all the praise in the world. Overcoming that intense brainwashing has to be incredibly difficult.
100% correct. It still shocks me that someone brainwashed for decades could some how see the light and overcome severe indoctrination.
Andy Johnson Like Sarah
It wouldn’t have been brainwashing if she grew up they way. It’d be indoctrination
Now if only we could get all the people conditioned by Fox "news" to overcome their brainwashing and stop believing in absolute bullshit as truth and truth to be fake news; and to get people to know that TV preachers, megachurches, and prosperity gospel preachers are all cults too and dangerous ones at that, then America could heal and become stronger as a nation again. Trump has weakened America with hatred and prejudices and his damned ego.
She was raised in this lunacy so she didn't get the whispered secret of "this is all bullshit, just go along with it." She was raised being told the awful things she was doing were loving, so when confronted with the fact she was actually hurting people, she dealt with that dissonance by questioning what she was taught... and discovering on her own "Oh wait! Turns out this is all bullshit!"
It's the same basic thing that happened to that guy who was raised by neo-Nazis. He was grew up sincerely believing the bullshit he was taught, but he wasn't raised to be a terrible person. So, it was only when he was exposed to more information, and information that expanded his worldview, that he, as a genuine person, examined what he'd been brought up believing and recognized that it was bullshit.
I want to congratulate Silverman for not making her interviews about a fight for attention. She is making the interview about the guest.
I genuinely clicked with reluctance, worried I would be disappointed. Proud of you, Silverman! Well done!
You make your brand about not being classy, but you are classyAF.
Excellent comment!
Secure Administrator a cabin made of cinder blocks... interesting!
Yes there are so many issues to be worked out, however I have little faith in much change. It is very scary to think of where this world will be when my children are voting age.
I do love America, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, but I think our government is severely flawed.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Secure Administrator I’m sorry, I read your comment but I can’t get past the fact you have a 27 year old??? You look 27 yourself!!! Time has been great to you I guess lol 😂
Facts i hate that. Like why attack someone who's changed. Lol
@@MelinWisconsin Just a tip from someone who used to be in your position:
I would take the time to relearn our own cultural history here in America, there really is so much progress made at such an unprecedented speed in our Country and it helped me gain a second perspective on these difficult times. The real reason we're all aware of these problems is simply because People gain awareness before they gain power over a problem. Time and time again humans have re-conquered our own mentalities and cultures to improve life in ways those before them could not even imagine.
Those change-makers will be your child's generation, and it will most likely wont come from a government, or a company, or any solution you or I could conceive- but it will change life for the better, as it always has.
Megan is proof that there is hope for the world.
Narrow Indow Oh shut up, you moron...
DV well stated & correct
DV correct but don't assume that people can't become intellectually curious. the intelligence thing, while for big parts genetical, is not set in stone either IMO. Also be aware that the intelligence we quantify is relatively low resolution. It doesn't represent the entire spectrum of human intelligence. Also don't assume that fanatics are generally speaking not intelligent. You'd be surprised. From the studies i've read actually fanaticism, political extremism and such is actually most common with people that are further from the average. This includes highly intelligent people as it also does include very unintelligent people. the whole thing isn't one dimensional though. People can generally speaking always change.
By dismissing 99% of the world as incapable of discourse and positivity you're basically doing what the westboro baptist church does Lol. Think about it.
Take the high ranking NSDAP members and other convicted military personnel of the third reich etc which took IQ tests at the Nuremberg trials... All of them except Julius Streicher had IQs above 125 with many reaching waaay beyond even into the 160s. Tons of them had IQs in the 140s. We're talking about a standard deviation of 15. Some of those people were fanatical ideologues too or at least pretended to be (you actually see that happen often with very intelligent people, they know how to manipulate). Intelligence is not everything. Intelligence can be used for great evil. It's a powerful tool.
@Narrow Indow That's Gods business . . . not yours. He'll figure it out
I love Sarah’s interviewing style.
She allows her guests to speak.
In time, all questions are answered.
Proud of Megan!
I want someone to look at me the way the Sarah Silverman looks at Megan
Allyson Wonderland --- Oh yeah? I might.

Like a basic human being? Can't be done. Sorry.
WHOA had no idea how wonderfully kind and genuine Sarah is. She’s an incredible interviewer.
Bee Bee yes! Loved every minute. It felt so refreshing compared to the late night talk shows we’ve come to know that feel forced
Bee Bee yesss! Haha I do too, they’re both incredible ladies
Bee Bee omg yes friendship :)
She just acting
She's so eloquent & beautiful! Not a scary clone of her mom like before. In case you EVER doubt your decision to leave the cult, don't. So many ex-Nazis & white supremacists have done the same. I'm sure many more will follow. Awesome interview.
Prophet Muhammad married a 6 year old girl.
@@wildbill8175 Seriously? No, he did not!
@@wildbill8175 mmmmk. But....what!??
@Kasper Kleine Tank Not that this makes it better but I believe the correct version is that he married Aisha when she was 6 but did not consummate the marriage until she was 9. It's fucked up, but its also weird we're talking about that here since its not relevant?
@Kasper Kleine Tank Islam in general isn't even that bad, I think you are mostly talking about wahabism. Wahabism is an ultra conservative intepretation that got very lucky because Saudi Arabia supported it and Saudi Arabia got very lucky when they discovered they had all that oil to fund lots of things to help wahabism like the construction of wahabist mosques and printing of wahabist quorans. So wahabism got spread all around.
Saudi Arabia only exists thanks to England and France making the Sykes Picot agreement drawing up their crazy map of the middle east cutting it up for their colonisation(that didn't really end up happening) with no regard for geography or what cultures lived there, thats why there are straight lines there on the map somebody drew them with a ruler with no idea what was under them. The crazy thing too about the Sykes-Picot agreement was that it was a betrayl of arabs since they had promised the arabs they'd help them create a unified kingdom after their help getting rid of the Ottoman empire.
But really you should create your own posts about it instead of hijacking others, otherwise it kind of looks like you are trying to 'what about' the topic away from discussing white nationalists and nazis. Plus remember the lessons of this former westboro baptist church member Megan, we are all people remember to have empathy even with the extremists!
I love that Sarah makes a point to introduce Megan as her friend. I think she knows that people still might judge Megan for her past, but Sarah is sort of protecting her before that starts because she knows people can change.
WOW. Everything about this blows my mind. I was raised in a fundamentalist evangelical community but it was nowhere near this extreme. Listening to her stories, her attitude, and seeing the way Sarah looks at her is just... I dunno, the whole thing is amazing.
joolieshinythings Is this Rebecca St. James? I knew u would come to ur senses!
East Village What? No,.
joolieshinythings Lol 😜
Youuu are Amazing.
3TNT3 Haha. That time she went on Fox News to say women who wear revealing clothes are to blame for rape or mistreatment. Free Rebecca from herself!
I really feel sorry for her. Even though the things they do are awful, they are still her parents and her sisters and she must still love them and miss them so much. It must be so hard for her to never be able to see even her sisters again.
sister she escaped wh 1 has 1other. yeah it must be very very hard.
She looks quite happy to me...her parents made a lifestyle choice and she is all the better for it. She a living a better life after escaping that abuse.
I do not think I can go five years without speaking to my mother.
@@AntiMasonic93 If your mother is in the Westboro Baptist church, the mother is no longer a human being...
@@ferox965 you didn't understand what she said, because she explains really well that everyone, even if you disagree with their beliefs, is a person and you have to listen and be patient and show arguments... She almost cried during the interview, because she miss her family, because she loves them no matter what, because she is kind and full of hope and comprehension and open minded.
I am brittish and this for me is the definition od being a true american. Open minded, kind, clever and looking forward.
As an American, I find that notion hilarious. Sorry to say.
As an American, I think that’s a really beautiful statement of what a true American SHOULD be. And many of us here still strive to be!
Yeah and then theres people like Trump and what this woman used to be.
As an American, I appreciate the sentiment. I do find it odd that a British person spelled their nationality, brittish. I mean, it makes a red line under the word.
Celf o gwmpas short films centre celf I think you're confused. That's not an American. That's a Swede
Another fantastic interview, with a bit of humor thrown in,. Thank you Sarah.
Its crazy how beautiful someone looks/is when they're not expressing so much hate. Megan is a completely different person.
Man, this very true. Kind and compassionate people spiritually shine regardless of their physical attributes.
@@Rath-Angkor-Thom I don't remember typing this 2 years ago. Lol.
@@mr.0lvera922 but you still stand by your statement? For me it will always be true😀
@@Rath-Angkor-Thom Nah. I've gone completely over to the dark side. She's hideous and should be excommunicated from society! 😫

Even if your family is evil, we still unfortunately love them. I really felt for her when she almost started crying about her family.
The current thumbs down numbers is 53, can't believe the WBC would let that many of their congregation watch CZcams. 😁
CrazyCatMomma Haha good one.
53 of her family church lol
LMAO
@Tom Smith
I don't think it's so much about giving her praise for being a normal decent human being ... I think it's more about the message she is trying to send about how others made it possible for her to reflect about her own actions by actually listening and asking thoughtful and relevant questions pertaining to her beliefs instead of attacking and ridiculing her. Being treated with kindness and as an equal, made her stop and think and re-evaluate her very own belief system; don't you think that is a powerful message on how to deal with those you thoroughly disagree with?
The 76 dislikes are probably from what’s left of Westboro 😂
Chimerahunt3r I thought the same thing!!
I don't even think there's 76 members left.
We hope that these 76 ppl will turn over a new leaf just like Megan..pls be open minded..n the world will be a better place for all humanity.
Sarah and Megan, very nice interview. I'm sorry for the loss of your family Megan. You're showing everyone that God is love. Whether you're Christian, Jewish, black or white, gay or straight. Three things he gave us, Faith Hope and Love , and the greatest is Love. We are all here to love one another. So, from someone from the LGBT community, I say Thank You. Thank you for opening your heart .
Oh wow
Megan is completely "non-religious" now. Faith will not cut it; you'll need evidence to enthuse the non-religious.
- “showing everyone God is love”
- is actually no longer religious at all and very happy for it
Way to completely miss all of the larger picture.
@@williamresham703 (this is old but JK Rowling witch trials brought me here). This is the logical error I keep seeing, and Megan's duplicity. She says reason and respectful challenge changed her views. But she also disavow Christianity based on Westboro's interpretation of the Bible. She says it is arrogance and hubris that allow one to have complete confidence in their interpretations, but then she feels she can hand wave away Jesus--not to mention centuries of biblical scholarship--based on the strawman her grandfather created. She says the bible has circular logic, but cannot see her own. The duplicity is maddening and shows reasoning is not the whole issue here.
she's glowing!! comparing to old wbc interviews really show how unhappy all that hate makes a person. I'm so happy she got out of it
Megan Phelps is inspiring. I love her story and I really appreciate learning that for as hurtful as Westboro is, they think they are being loving. That is so valuable to understand. How many extremists are this way? I don’t know. I expect the majority of bad ideas stem from fear, not “love”, but it is very important to find out what motivates extremist views.
Sodomites burning in Hell is not "extremist"... literally what the Holy Bible informs us of.
"I expect the majority of bad ideas stem from fear, not “love”...
I would add ignorance and being naive to the mix. These three things probably contribute the most to people being racist as well.
Shie H. They’re told it’s loving. But the leaders of WBC are filled with hate and fear and that’s why even though they were taught and some would have believed very much it was out of love, once challenged that fell away and all you see is the fear, hate and anger left behind. So glad She left even tho I’m sure it’s been hard. I felt so much for her and her sister when watching ‘the most hated family in America’ thing.
Shie H. As in I don’t think Shirley Phelps, her mother and last I checked leader or WBC, believes it is out of love.
God doesn't hate people. People do.
dietlamp You sure. I see a lot of hate wordings in verses in the bible.
The Bible does say God hates people, and says so many times. "The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity" - Psalm 5:5.
God doesn't even exist, yet alone hate.
Right on the money pal.
God has nothing to do with the Bible.
Megan you are a brave and intelligent woman, thank you for living your truth and spreading the love.
Sarah is just so multi-talented. Great interview: probing, compassionate, centered on the interviewee - and funny.
That's what makes this interview stand out. Silverman doesn't interrupt.
Sarah is showing amazing interview skills more than lots of journalist we see in the media today.
damn everytime she says hurricane katrina i think of that damn vine

Vine has caused so much problems 😂
Hi my name's Katrina. 😂😂😂
Could someone send me a link?
Wow. Megan Phelps-Roper. There's so much going on here. Articulate ex-extremist with an interesting, relevant story.
holy shit, I saw her on the Louis Theroux documentary about the Westboro Baptists! Would not even recognise her now! Incredible how much she has changed in such a short amount of time.
Keep up the good work Sarah. Thank you for these great interviews.
Good works are done by the ones who know God the father is real unlike this murders, spawn from Cain seed when will Able wake up aka the Christians 12 tribes , she just mocks and no one sees
FLAT EARTH RESEARCH u r so funny!
WOW. I didn't think she'd get out. Shame on me. I'm so happy she broke away, but I feel for her and even her family. They need to have a reunion to settle this. The family needs to tone down and find common ground.
Or all die in a horrible fire. You know.
she doesn’t go for the “i was indoctrinated” angle she flat out says “i believed this. this is why i did these terrible things.” and that takes some true character. cool lady.
I am so fucking impressed by Sarah Silverman. This is actually really beautiful and I'm so in love with this show.
Right on, Sarah. Fascinating stuff.
Great Interview Sarah. You have a knack for the interviewing thing. I am happy to see Megan Phelps-Roper got away from Westboro Baptist Church. She seems so positive.
A remarkable woman. Takes a lot to reflect on yourself and make change.
Running to watch on Hulu!
Wow, great interview. Subscribing ~~💙
ILY America is a treasure. She is so good at engaging so many diferring pov.
Love u Sarah!!!
thank you sarah
I love how she addressed how to have discussion and how to listen. You have got to see the different perspectives and understand.
This is a phenomenal interview and so important in helping us understand how we should connect with people we think we despise.
Look at the light & happiness that shines from her, now. Wow. Sarah is right about her being such a positive person. She was indoctrinated since birth by a cult. Hatred was literally all she knew. I love her inspirational story. Good for her. 💙
I grew up in northeast Kansas in a university town about an hour away from where Westboro was located. As a child, I remember seeing them picket all the time. They even picketed my graduation (not because of me specifically - I have no idea why actually). I remember thinking these people were so hateful and crazy. When I first saw Megan's story of change I was so happy for her and I'm glad that she's spreading her message today.
This is so amazing. Great interview of a great lady. If only more people TALKED to the other side.
This girl, Megan I believe her name is, is very wise, it's super cool people took the time to try and get their point across, and the fact that she listened is pretty amazing. I hope other members from that church can see what their doing really isn't love, real love isn't telling someone that God hates them, or there gonna go to hell. I really liked this interview.
Wow. Just watched two amazing characters talk humanity. That's how cummunication is supposed to be done. Love both the interviewer and her guest.
The best segment. Very important, nuanced and empathetic.
Listened to Megan’s audiobook and watched many interviews with her. Never have heard her laugh before. This show was such a treasure- genuinely sorry it is no more.
Positive message and good in every way yet people thumbs-down the video. Fucking trolls.
sometimes i think people dont even know why theyre thumbs upping or downing. thank you for that, facebook. (psych)
+ FreeWorldChannel And they're so afraid of dying...They never learn to live. The Rose.
Those dislikes are from WBC.
The really good thing about Megan is that she doesn't just make us think, but makes us think again.
You can really tell that the people who have left the cult (because it’s NOT a church) have really benefited from leaving, I used to despise Megan but now I love her for her bravery in leaving and now she can be a conduit for change imo
Challenge the Extremists.
Make them change their minds for the better.
She was exposed and she understood.
But more importantly she was OPEN to learn and was able to put herself in the other’s perspective.
Most people cannot do that.....
Lovely interview, well done!! Megan, so proud of you, your courage, humility and honesty. I pray that you will be reconciled with your family one day. Xxx
Sarah hits a homerun yet again. She is so talented & thoughtful. Megan Phelps-Roper is so brave to leave that terrible, life destroying cult.
100% talented comedian & talented interviewer too. Sarah has always been very thoughtful. Great job, truly... Megan has done the right thing 100% Great to see this interview.
Brilliant conversation.
Man, I love Sarah Silverman more and more as time goes on. And I've been impressed by this lady for a long time now. Megan should be an inspiration for us all and a reminder that no matter what our past, no one is doomed. We can all change and grow and improve. I needed this today.
Oh wow that was really nice! Good job Sarah!
I have a ton of respect for her. She seems like an amazing person.
Wow, Sarah is a great interviewer. Great questions, listens to answers, and doesn't interrupt unnecessarily. Megan is a kind soul.
Well done Megan much respect to you for leaving them living with so much hate is not good for anyone
Okay I love this woman. Honestly. She is an angel. And the twitter troll made me die 😂😂😂
Megan is truly amazing. She has tremendous courage and confidence. Even in this interview which was supposed to be supportive, ended up being fairly critical. I give her so much credit for being willing to the the difficult and often unfair things, for the right cause. She's a true role model.
I love this and love you for doing this show and kind of interview! Megan, you inspire me to work harder to understand and love better. You are a hero.
This mentality is exactly the same within the Jehovah’s Witnesses. They try to “warn” others of the end of the world. They are extremists as well. People who leave are shunned by their family just like this woman. This was a great interview.
During WW2 the Jehovas Witnesses would do similar things to Westboro. They were of course pacifists so would never join the military, but they'd go to the families of dead soldiers to tell them they're in hell and the end of the world is coming.
@@OhMaDayzz you're completely full of crap
The sad thing is that religion is a lifestyle choice.
This is a great conversation
Sarah Silverman. You are amazing. This interview was absolutely riveting. Thank you 🙏🏻
THANK YOU
What a journey she has been on ❤
Kudos to Megan for being willing to change...maybe there is hope for the world.
Megan welcome to humanity! We are not perfect and we have lots of issues, but we have love and hope for each other. You are an inspiration to others. All the best to you and you hubby.
First saw her on Louis Theroux’s documentaries. You have to watch some of the clips! She came such a long way
I think he helped her look at the whole thing and wanted her to change
Thank you, Sarah Silverman, for this important format you're providing.
Amazing. Thank you Sarah for another great interview. This one makes me want HULU...not a good joke...
(But really)
I think rejecting bad doctrine is one of the most difficult things to do as a human. Leaving your family and every community tie you’ve built since childhood is heart-wrenching. Starting over must be so hard but she seems to be doing it with love and intentionality. I pray her family sees the truth and they can be reunited again some day.
God bless those who have the patience to deal with hatred straight up
Sarah Silverman with all her slightly raunchy humor that people say isn’t terrible- lives the most important value found in the Bible. - Love thy neighbor And she proves it magnificently as she does this show.
I love that dress I have the same one from old Navy
Wow Sarah is 47 she looks really good for your age.
This is fantastic
What this lady discovered when she left her church........ The people she targeted are more open and loving, caring and forgiving than her friends and family in the church. Make of that what you will.
Really fascinated by the psychological shift that Megan went through. I wish they spent more time talking about how exactly she let go of her former perceptions. Also worth noting is that you can really see how much Sarah loves her - at least that's what I saw. Really incredible warmth between those 2.
Her story is fascinating and she is very nice. I am friends with one if the main Twitter "trolls" who challenged her and eventually became friends with her, and i met her in Jerusalem.
It's an important lesson that however hateful her family and the WBC is (and she doesn't deny that for one second) they truly believe that the hate is doing God's work. To have to call into question everything you believe and then leave it behind you and go off alone is just astounding.
amazing transformation and world view shift. inspirational.
I normally can't stand Silverman but she was awesome in this interview
All I can say is WOW!!! This young womans demeanor has drastically changed from the first interview I've seen of her compared to this one. God bless this young lady
The ironic thing is, they threatened to sue anyone who picketed Fred’s funeral.
If I lived in Topeka I would have tested them. Let it go to court, say “I only did what they’ve been doing for decades, if I’m guilty than all of them are too” , then counter sue
Megan is incredible, so proud of her growth
Loved her on Howard sterns Hollyweird Squares!!!!!!
MORE EPISODES PLEASE SARAH WE LOVE YOU
I really liked how she called her "my friend Megan".
Good for Megan. GOD has now truly blessed her
This show is so awesome
If I have evvvvver 'encountered' a more impressive human being . . . I cannot recall them, at the moment. This woman just blows me away. I am awestruck by her for so many reasons and in so many different ways.
If owwwwwwnly such a person would ever run for president, and win..... I would be sooooooo much more optimistic for the future.
Sadly, it rarely works this way.
Wow. Just wow
this is BEAUTIFUL
I saw this girl on Louis Theroux' interview/documentary on the W Baptists.
I am a 32yr gay man that grew up in Topeka, ks. I know and have spoken to her cousins that were excommunicated before her rise to fame. I can tell you there is a lot more to her story, like what happened to Fred at the end ( I also wanna know more about his early days at southern tent revival meetings and his male friend).....maybe one day others, like her mother, will tell the tale.
She is so beautiful inside and out x
This show seems amazing
I love youSarah, please notice me! I have been following you around since your days on SNL. -- and your stand up!!! Please respond! I also saw you in Austin with Luise CK.
God bless you Megan.
Kudos to Megan. She is an inspiration, but I can't imagine how painful it must be to walk away from your family. You can see the hurt in her when she speaks about it and to do what she is doing takes a tremendous amount of courage. We all have mothers and fathers and caretakers that we love, and to cut yourself off from that isn't easy. She is doing a great service by telling her story and advocating for humane and compassionate behavior. I hope her mother comes around because she too looks like she misses her children.
