Callie & Jamie | When Am I Gonna Lose You

  • I will call upon a big description for this one.
I love The Fosters and Callie is probably one of my fave characters ever so, naturally, I followed the fandom to Good Trouble. The show is the natural evolution of The Fosters: the same debates, the same take on social issues happening in the world but applied to "young" adult everyday life and with a more irreverent approach.
I've always found Callie a complex character and Brandon had an important role in shapping her. Not in terms of having a say in who she should be but in Callie herself being able to figure that out. That said, Brandon and Callie will remain one of my favorite ships.
Callie and Jamie have one of those exciting relationships (and well written [and directed] - just like the show) where they're able to discuss their views on the world, agree to disagree and still like one another. The idea behind this video is to show exactly that: the journey of a relationship in which two people are constantly challenging eachother with their differences. The question is not if they'll lose the understanding of eachother, but when.
Jamie looks like a genuinely good guy, who with all of his defects, just wants to make the girl he likes happy and safe. And I don't entirely think it's one sided. At all. Let's see what the writters have in mind for them.
Thank you for watching (and reading if that was the case).

Keyword being HEALTHY! I agree. They have arguments like any couple but it's never physical, emotional, or mentally abusive and that is the key. They're young, still learning about themselves, how to adult, and balance work. I think couples therapy and more communication between them would be fab and so fun to watch on screen since there aren't many shows that normalize healthy relational conflict AND therapy.

Their relationship is the definition of healthy people in conflict/dealing with personal issues that overlap their relationship. Overall the relationship isn't toxic. They aren't physically, mentally, or emotionally abusive towards each other. Their downfall is that they both ignore/choose not to/don't understand/are unsure how to process their own issues and or past trauma which comes out sideways with things they hyper-fixate on. I think it would be a PHENOMENAL storyline to show this couple in therapy and 1-1 therapy because in life people aren't going to have that perfect fairytale/cinematic romance. There is conflict. There are external factors. There is past trauma. There is self-sabotage. BUT it's important to showcase the HEALTHY difference between these things versus glorifying an abusive relationship and movies/tv justifying it as "aw they're so cute" or "they're so passionate."
I really love their challenges and how they continue to overcome it. They take the time to say, "no we can't be together" even when it hurts, and at times watching it seems frustrating.
SEASON 3 FINALE SPOILER ALERT BELOW.
I loved how the season 3 finale brought their journey full circle. In the courtroom, they were able to journey through the other person's experience/thought process and when the kid was on the stand, look over and GET what the other was trying to communicate when they last broke up. It wasn't that they were trying to change the other person (which is what it came out to look like), but rather SHOW the person they loved why this stance mattered so much and why they wanted the other to share the same belief--because it meant the world to them.
They both realized the weight of the ethics in law AND had the wave of "woah, we really are growing up" at the same time.
Overall I really like how Jaime chose to acknowledge his privilege and learn. I think that says a lot about a while wealthy male who had EVERYTHING growing up and to make genuine space for Callie who had the opposite upbringing. He repeatedly showed Callie (even when he made mistakes) that he is open to learning and trying something that he doesn't know about/agree with. I think for anyone to take that positive stance is spectacular--especially when you find that within a life parter.
I also really enjoyed how Callie started to become more vulnerable and talk about HER dreams and HER goals while in a relationship with him. I think Jamie's privilege of being able to chase after what he wanted and be okay with vocalizing and admitting to himself that he wants XYZ, was slowly rubbing off on Callie. I thought that was so cool to see how that was both something she struggled with yet started accepting.
I'm hoping that season 4 at least has them strengthen their friendship. AND start a practice of their own. I think they compliment each other so well. If it happens to blossom into something more....well, I'm onboard that ship. ;)
Okay, that concluded my essay on two fictional character's love story LOL.
