Science Think hello madam.. What is the oxidation number of MnSO4? Please tell
Sudip Pandey , SO4 has an oxidation number of -2 , And the summation of oxidation states of all the elements is zero therefore Mn should have +2 oxidation number . So that
Mn + SO4 = 0
(+2 ) + (-2 ) = 0
Overall charge on the molecule is zero .
If you want to calculate it : -
We know ,Mn shows +2 oxidation state and Oxygen shows -2 . Let the oxidation number of Sulphur be x ,
MnSO4
(+2) + x + 4 (-2) = 0
2+ x - 8 = 0
x = 8 - 2
x = +6
Therefore , Sulphur has +6 oxidation number .
If we calculate for Mn , let the oxidation number of Mn be x ,
MnSO4
x + 6 + 4 (-2) = 0
x + 6 -8 = 0
x = 8 - 6
x = +2
Therefore , Mn exists in +2 oxidation number .
Oxidation Number in MnSO4 ,
Manganese (Mn) : + 2
Sulphur (S) : + 6
Oxygen (O) : - 2 ( Each oxygen atom )
