Word of encouragement for any newbies out there. I've been playing guitar for a long time, but I pretty much played rhythm the whole time. I would write or play simple licks at times, but never really tried lead. I decided I wanted to expand a bit and this song is one of my favorites. I was frustrated at first, but being an old bastard I know how these things work. I broke down the parts that gave me trouble and repeated them slowly and correctly until I felt I could speed it up. Honestly it took me a couple of days just repeating those parts and slowly integrating into the parts that didn't give me any trouble. I played those parts slowly and smoothly, slowing down and speeding up as I saw appropriate anytime I was on my couch hands free. I actually hadn't picked up the guitar in a few months, so my fingers were sore the first two days. I keep thinking of a phrase I learned from a friend I used to martial arts with, slow is smooth and smooth is fast
That's great advice. I'm definitely a newbie to this. I kind of did what you suggested before reading your comment but didn't know if the intuitive approach would pan out. The repeating of the parts that require you to slow down definitely helps. Would you say the repeating basically turns it into muscle memory and you're not really thinking so hard about it after so many practices?
I rented that movie back in the 90’s and dosed over a weekend. That guy at the beginning made us laugh for hrs!
Thanks, wish there was paper around this area
I it’s a shit ton
“Just do this” followed by an absolutely face melting solo 😂 That was beautiful and inspiring man
Finally. One of mayer’s best tunes 😉
Lmao
lololololololololololololololololololololololol
there is soooo much value in this play dead series. fucking love it!!
Probably my favourite Dead song ,played with love and dedication. Thanks man you've just made my day and given me weeks of playing to get this one down.
St. Stephen! Looking forward to this one. Thanks for the series! Love these videos.
I love the intro scene. “St.Stephen!!” Thank you for this video and time spent to it. Woot! God Bless you.
Thank you Davvy
Its Diwali in india and this the best gift i received. I wish health and vitality for everybody.
I had scrolled youtube for hours for a st.stephen lesson but never found any. Thank you for bringing this to life.
Take care brother
Been waiting for this since the first Play Dead episode! Thanks a lot, stellar work here, Davvy
Thanks for posting this lesson. Great run through!
Oh boy! I've been waiting for this one. Thanks my dude. Love you Davvy!
Love you, brother Kush!
Thanks for another great lesson, Davvy !
davvy! you’re the man!! thank u + sending love your way ☮️
Thanks you so much for this! Love this song; dropping 5 in the bucket next live stream.
The one and only St. Stephen. Thanks Davvy, There is nothing like playing St. Stephen. Enjoyed the lesson brother.
One of my favorites! Thanks man great lesson ✌🏼
'live dead' was the soundtrack for senior year high school (70/71) ... those songs are 'chemically' etched into the dna .. and what a splendid dissection down to the sequenced strands .. and darn funny too ..
That was an awesome lesson, dude!
Thanks Brother Davvy
I love this song. Thanks. You're a great teacher and love the humor.
One of my favorite versions is Oakland Show in October 1976. I think it was a Dick's Picks like 33 or something. Jerry starts with Alfred Hitchcock theme then the band flows into St. Stephen, then the flows into Not Fade Away where Jerry just tares it up and takes everyone on the adventure.
Great lesson - thanks Davvy ! Gotta say I love the part where you finish first part of intro and say "it's not too bad...well...it took me all day..." HAHAHAHA. That's when I knew I was in trouble ✌
This is so exciting, thanks man!
The dude abides
Amazing stuff man thank you!
I JUST GOT THE NOTI, IM HOING HOME AND LEWRNING THISSSS
Yeahhh! Brother thank you for this masterpice
Spell check my ninjas..

This is the best thing on the internet today
Thanks buddy...I was actually able to absorb that and play it...
Thanks for struggling thru that with us...
Great job! … and patience.
You are a legend
Thanks man totally appreciate the time you put into that. Great lesson. NFA! (but seriously, can you do NFA)
thanks!!
Finnaly my tune!
Awesome. thanks again Davvy! Funny shit at around the 7 minute mark reminds me of that guy from beetlejuice with the shrunk head lmao 🤣
Holy shit, that solo in the end left me breathless
How about some acoustic gweetar lessons?
Yessssss finally
Davvy, thanks for the lessons! When you strum chords in a GD song, what method do you use to work in muted strums? Is it with the drum rhythm, just how you feel with no particular structure, or what?
Back in the 70's when there was no internet and no Davvy, we had to sit in front of an old stereo and play St. Stephen track over and over to try to figure out the chords. Never got them right. Did I add we only had pitch pipes to tune our guitars?
ST. STEPHENNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!
This man gets it!
@@TobyDavvy it’s funny I made that comment as the video was starting. Shoulda known you were gonna open with that. Great minds.
Thanks, dude. Mighty wholesome 🌈
Ps what's that guitar you're playing? She's a looker!
The beginning with the guys arguing about the movie was so funny
Any chance you could do Jerry band version of Lay Down Sally?
Fantastic. Thank you. ⚡✌💥🐢🧸🌈❤🌍🌞🙏
Right on. I gotta find someone to jam with
I love your new guitar Birdy! However, for these lessons it would cool if you could use a guitar with inlays so it’s easier to watch where your fingers are. I know you have dots on the side, so it doesn’t matter from your perspective. Either way, thanks for lessons!
I provide tabs with the lesson. I hear where you’re coming from, but I’m only responsible for so much. You should know where your frets are. I’ll be getting decals for Birdie, so this doesn’t happen anymore.
Did u go to Hollywood Bowl21 Davey?
Nooe
Is that THE John Williams, composer extraordinaire for movies!
Nice
Country garden?
Isn’t it “country *garland*
in the wind and the rain”?
Yup time go rewatch the movie
But for real if you read this comment can you hit the like button? This one was a big one y’all!
Another awesome vid, but needs more reverb!
Always need more reverb
New subscriber - can you tell me more about the guitar you are playing??
Her name is Birdie and I built her myself. There’s a video on the channel of the whole build process.
All about it, thanks friend@@TobyDavvy
EPIC!
The intro are getting better loll
anyone know what specific phred model that guitar is? Is it a custom or something? I can't find it anywhere, it's a cool body shape
I built that guitar. Her name is Birdie.
@@TobyDavvy oh cool! really beautiful guitar
Great tutorial! However I think moving forward you should have the chords charted out on the video with the specific fingering, it would make it much easier to follow along. Thank you!
Without inlays, it's slightly harder to follow things on the neck. Yes, tabs are ok but visual support on how teacher moves, mental shapes and stuff, is also important. That guitar is absolutely gorgeous but maybe for these kinds of lessons would it be a bit better with the wolf?
I hear you. I’m only responsible for so much, though. You should know where your frets are. But yeah, I’m probably gunna get some of those fret decals so this doesn’t happen anymore
@@TobyDavvy mighty kind response, thanks for the videos man dig it
Help on the way/slipknot! Next?
“St. Stepheeeeeeen!”
How have not done Sugar Magnolia
Sugar mags is comin!
fucking best CZcams channel !!
What city are you from Davey ?
I was starting to wonder what shaggy was up to nowadays, how's scoob?
I love that sexy guitar bro.
Has anyone seen the bridge
That elusive bridge
It was written about Phil Lesh’s Saint Bernard. Frfr
What?!
@@TobyDavvy , yes sir! I can’t remember if I heard about it from one of the documentaries or from Phil’s book but it wasn’t just from “some dude” I do believe
Also Stephen Gaskin…..
yes i thought the same thing too ... 'monday night class' ..
Next, can you teach me that the stove is hot?
Absolutely
As much as I love the Dead - and as much as I love the Live Dead version of St. Stephen (and the Eleven) - your sarcastic contributions are a bit on the "too much" side.
Cool, I’m sure there’s another lesson out there that will suit your sensibilities. Appreciate the judgement on these videos that I work very hard on. I’m sure yours are much better.
His passion and attention to detail is quite impressive and educational. Thanks brother!
15 minutes in and my finger tips are already telling me to fuck off. At some point this will stop being an issue I hope 🤞
Somebody stole his inlays
And sweet guitar. wtf is that thing?
It's his custom built guitar. He designed it and built it with his homies at his local shop. I'm blanking on the name of the shop. Amazing guys and an amazing guitar. It's got a Purple Heart stripe from the strap button to the top of the headstock. I can't say enough about how dope that guitar is.
Greatful Dead suck. Lame elevator music.
Yet. Here you are
