  • A 1988 European film was made about this place, so no surprise that this has become a popular tourist attraction among international travelers. The place re-opened in mid-2022 and Andrea Pruett, the owner (since her husband passed away), is usually there to greet people from all around. A Hampton Hotels Save-a-Landmark historical marker was placed there in 2003 and still stands.

I remember the cafe from the late 60s and early 70s. I am a native Californian, and we traveled that stretch of highway quite often. When you would pass through Newbury springs the cafe would always catch your eye, I believe it was because of the incongruity of the architecture. Somehow an A frame building with a shake roof seemed so out of place on the desert floor, as they were always seen in the California mountains.I am probably older than most of you as I always think of Jack Palance In"Spartacus" or as a tough in some film noir, love his character in Baghdad cafe.

Great memories of the place! It's good to have people recall the cafe during a different time

Bagdad Cafe used to be called the Sidewinder. The original Bagdad cafe was abandoned, though it still stands. After the movie was done the Sidewinder Cafe just kept the Bagdad name.

Great little video! This place is on my bucket list. I consider myself a geographical historic legacy person and after discovering this place and hence acquiring the namesake movie I will have to visit someday. Sad to see the motel is gone but I hope the sign can be restored like Roy's and soon too the Roadrunner Restaurant for a place to place neon tour in the desert night. Thanks!

You should definitely visit! But what you saw in the video is what you get for now. Food may be served in the future. Still, it's cool that it makes one feel like part of the movie! Thanks for watching

I've always stopped in the Bagdad Cafe when out exploring the desert east of Newberry Springs in the winter months. The ChiliSide was our meal of choice.. do they still serve it???

That's cool that you were there in the earlier days. Unfortunately as of now they are not serving food (at least they didn't during my visit)

My first time I was there the run down motel was still in the right of the restaurant. I ate there once and that was enough. The stops I made after that I didn't bother to go inside. I did see the movie...it was okay.

This was my last stop before I drove back to Las Vegas. Glad I made the detour...

Is the picture of Burt Lancaster still there?

I don't recall seeing any pictures of famous people in there at the time of my visit last month, so I have no idea 😐

Jack Palance was GREAT in City Slickers 1 and 2 with Billy Crystal. Funny without the usual stupidity. Great movies.

So much has changed, In 2000, there were pictures of all the cast on the walls and the cafe was pretty much as it was in the movie. It is sad that the Magic is gone, The outside is still ok and Brenda's office was a facade that has been removed. From what I see, I won't bother to stop. The Magic Is Gone, What made it what it was, has been removed. , It is a Historic structure turned into a cheap tourist trap. It is a shame.

You're not wrong. I was wondering what happened to Brenda's office (I recently watched the movie) and now I know. No disrespect to the owner, but it was very sad going in the place. I do hope they serve food once again...or maybe sell more goods, as the pandemic (among other reasons) hit them hard.

Disappointed you didn't add your name to the wall, somehow, someway! Also, no close up of the defunct motel sign? Now you gotta go back a 3rd time! ;) How was the food?

I know, this one probably could have been a bit better. I still need to watch the actual film (hopefully it's available to rent/buy on some streaming platform), even though I should have before I came here. I've left my mark on a lot of places out there, so no worries on that one. Unfortunately, I didn't get any food - something I felt bad about but they were happy they had visitors. There was also a couple from Italy that were there during my visit.

bombay would have been a better name. I witnessed a string of bombs including and especially a nitrogen bomb in the salton sea. I was at la quinta resort la quinta california october 1999 at a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation FDIC bank examiner conference at 10 or 11 am and the first nitrogen bomb and maybe more went off as soon as the conference started. I almost passed out in the parking lot while walking to conference room fuel vapors and heat.
In 2024 I went to minnesota to get eye exam and discovered i have a bullet hole above my eye that was leaking I was in 25 year amnesia and then i remembered the events $35 billion in lithium in salton sea is the prize. The salton sea was a basin and it was cracked. some call it the sink I call it a basin and some call it the aquifer
i lost my job my wife my home my land due to my expert audit skills. i use medical skills and warfare training analysis in high tech robberies. I want a home in belvedere or a $8 million estate in salton sea area. The lithium binds to silica and blinds children in 2024 In 1999 the fuel and fertilizer and maybe more ruined the salton sea and a string of earthquakes followed I am going blind. I need a home I would prefer my own death in a pleasant fashion with no one nearby to rescue in the middle of the desert. I want to be eaten by animals
My mother was likely a genetic experiment she had ovaries that also gave birth to eggs like echidna or platypus would but we are human or at least I am she likely had human ovary as well My testes were messed and my genome but I have special skills They harvested the math and speech part of my brain and shot me in the face and I survived. The nitrogen bomb or nuclear in 1999 and my throat was slit in robbery one month after the conference I drove a triangle to survive Mother wanted me to die when she was about to die She wanted me to get her gun and do it in the backyard so no one would rescue me. I should have obeyed. I did not know in 2004 what I know in 2024
The children of salton sea should be relocated with lithium money I too We deserve marin county.
