- Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways!
Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.
In simple trust like theirs who heard
Beside the Syrian sea
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word
Rise up and follow Thee.
Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.
Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm!
Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Words: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892).
C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918)
Arr. H. A. Chambers to music from "Judith"
St. Bartholomew's Choir
Paolo Bordignon, Organist and Choirmaster
Stunning!
Beautiful. The words by John Greenleaf Whittier are timeless and Spirit-inspired.
My favourite hymn.
Such a beautiful hymn. Thank you.
Astonishing and lovely - AND the very rare Chambers arrangement! Even the Wells Cathedral doesn't get it right. Thank you. I will save it forever.
I absolutely adore this hymn and this rendition is beautiful
Mo loop móvv
♥️♥️♥️
This brought me to tears...for all the right reasons. Thank you so much!
Good for you guys!
Perfect song for the times
So poignant, especially because of the Covid 19 context in which it was filmed. I play this often. It never fails to uplift and inspire. Thank you, 'Barts'.
Unglaublich rührend 😌😔
Absolultely beautiful - the arrangement, singing, mixing and editing are top notch. Thank you for sharing and PTL.
I love the words in their poignancy!
Thank you sooo very much
Just brilliant!
The 2007 movie Atonement makes especially poignant use of this hymn. The scene is the Normandy beach in (I think) 1940, where 300,000 exhausted allied soldiers are waiting to be rescued before the Germans arrive. There is a gazebo filled with English soldiers, singing this hymn. Noble and heartbreaking.
It was Dunkirk where the soldiers were rescued. There's a separate film with that title. The boat rescue is also covered in "Mrs. Miniver" with Greer Garson.
Simply gorgeous. Everyone was awesome, but the men...bravissimo!!!
So very beautiful. I adore it. It was sung at my ordination 22 years ago. Brings tears to my eyes.
Used to love singing this arrangement
Thanks guys gorgeous sound
Absolutely love this. Truly beautiful
Lovely
Beautiful , Very, Very!!!!!!
Thank you and God bless you all, from Sri Lanka
So moving, partly because of the Covid context during which it was filmed. I play it often and never fail to be uplifted and inspired. Thank you, ' Barts'.
I love d song 4 restored my soul
I woke up now with the song in my heart
This is where I go when the day has been hard...
Harmonically wonderful, if angels sing it could well sound like this and please, please forgive our foolish ways.
How did you do this? It’s amazing!
So beautiful! It’s wonderful to see you all. I watch the service online especially to hear the choir and sermons but everyone has a mask on! Thank you for this from your Toronto friends!
Kudos to the organist for his sensitivity :-) Really beautiful rendition overall!
Thank you for this - it's so beautiful! Could I have permission to use it in our Zoom worship at Taunton United Reformed Church?
