About Jay Wilson:
Hi My name is Jay Wilson and I am an avid African cichlid keeper and owner of NorthFinUSA. I love Keeping Fish and educating folks on how to keep a crystal clear aquariums along with helping Fish keepers get started in the fish hobby. When I am not messing with Cichlids or frogs I am playing with my son and working out. I currently keep Cichlids, Geophagus along with Tropheus and Goby, 2 vivariums and some shrimp and a betta. My dream tank ..... I guess I will never get there. Follow me on my fish keeping journey and do not forget to follow me on Instagram!

Ran across your channel by accident doing research for my African Cichlid tank. Your channel is SO MUCH MORE!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much
Thank you. I agree. Running an over stocked 250 gallon African Cichlid tank. 2 Fx6 and large sponge filter. Been caring for fish well over 40 years.
@Jay Wilson love your take on it, but this may seem like Crazy ideal, why can't you use the intake to bring water to Sump with a skimmer on top and lower, then use the return pump, would it make sense to use both. Canister filter the prefect filter for such things quietly, then you simple adjust flow back to tank with return pump, maybe I am over simplifying this. If your canister is natrate factory, great that why you send it to your sump and refuge, then bame return pump to tank. You can adjust flow back for level. Next best thing is power failure, no shipon. You could even have auto on and off level controller for safety if your filter gets plugged up. Good example is Fluval surface skimmer intake.
@@Jaywil07Agreed. Bottom sumps are a huge headache to clean out and an eye sore for doorless aquarium stands. All you need is a canister filter with 100- or 50-micron filter felt (which works better than Poly-Fil for removing green water algae by the way), and an Unscripted Aquarium Clarifier (UAC). Tiny device that’s safer than UV sanitizing filters and it won’t break your wallet.😊
This hobby is about doing what works for YOU! Canisters work for YOU! That's all that needs to be said. Well done Jay.
You gotta clean the canisters too.
💩🤎🥱
Spoken like a sump fanboy!
Wow! This is the first video i have watched of yours and i am blown away! I wasnt expecting to learn so much about you. I like how real you are and the fact that you teared up was cool and im glad you didnt edit that out. Im a new fan and have to see more! Thank you for the sump vs canister info and the life lesson as well🙏
Love your videos! You are a inspiration to the hobby! I have learned so much from you and your content. So thank you for all that you do!
Right in the feels today, Jay. Stories of my late father are the only thing that chokes me up. You could start a 2nd channel with just motivational stories and I'd be there front and center. You're awesome!
This means so much
Thanks for the heart felt video, i lost my dad on father's day this year. You helped me realise that its not just me, that tears up talking about thier dad. N thanks for sharing yr life choices. God Bless
I use sumps on my larger tanks because as a 52 year old female, lifting large canisters out to clean them was painful on my back. But I totally see your good points on canisters. I’ve had them. I also love supplementing my sumps with “planted” versions of the Aqua Clear HOB filter. I say all filters have their strengths and weaknesses. In the end, every hobbyist should do what works for them in their situation for sure. Great vid.
Really loving your content and perspective on the canister vs sump. The hobby almost makes you feel guilty for using them, but sometimes they are more practical. Good for going with what works for you and not being ashamed......
Great job brother keep doing what you do and I'll keep watching. oh ya where can I get one of those hw5000s
Very informational and inspirational! Keep it up man!
Well done Jay, been following you for a few years and love your videos, but this one is one of "the best"... so glad you made this and thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much
Hey brother just saw your video it was fantastic thank you for the inspiration.
Anytime
Love your passion!
Great video. I had similar problems with echo and high ceilings. Only thing that fixed it was covering a piece of wood in that foam and suspending it a foot or two off the ceiling. Even a small 2ft by 2ft board hanging will change everything
I think ur doing great do what u do bud and keep the videos going I watch every one !!!
Maybe one of your best videos. Love the authentic emotion you portrayed towards the end. Thank you! Keep it real brother! Only way to live!
👍👍Great video loved it.. he'll I love all your videos. Only been in the hobby a year.. I'm still learning & have a whole lot more to learn.. a whole lot more. Thank you.. you are so informative, transparent, inspiring, & positive . Again thank you Jay.
I came to learn about filters and got an inspirational speech! Awesome!
I GOT IT!!! Use the canister filter to feed the sump!!!!! No overflow splash down noise with the best of both worlds!!!! Maybe overly complex, twice the cleaning, more points of failure.... ah crap nevermind....
I have long had the same idea with using the canister to run water back to the aquarium and a herbie for silent overflow. Leave the canister empty and it does not need to be serviced. The advantage (besides a silent and powerful motor) is you can take the return out of the sump and put it in the aquarium and clean and service the sump. This could be done as a water change since you need to drain the sump to clean it.
@@kenney9120 ive never heard of anyone cleaning their sump tho. Wont you kill good bacteria?
@@blacksnakegray2552 I didn't mean to drain it or use cleaners. I meant to remove algae and build up from the surfaces plus cleaning or changing the media as needed just like with any filter. Build up needs to be kept to a minimum.
@@kenney9120 i knew that you didnt use cleaners. I didnt know how how much you cleaned it. I know that over cleaning can kill some bacteria. But you just got the extra off, gotcha.
This is the video I needed. I was contemplating getting a sump.
Thank you.
Nice bit of inspiration there Jay 👍👍
Great video man👍🏽
My god man, you're a trip!! Love your attitude .. Keep on keeping on ..
I was just snooping for some built in, back of tankwall overflows, and saw your caption pic. All I could think of, was Loverboy cover, from back in the day.. The pink shorts maybe ? Always good info Jay !
First time viewer, and got more than I was expecting. I really enjoyed your video & I think you just got a new subscriber!
Great video, I think there is pros and cons to any kind of filtration. It’s all about what works for you.
When I saw you in those shorts all I could think of was Bert Reynolds Play boy center fold in 1979. Keep up the great work, I enjoy your video.
Hahahahaha
I'm with you completely! I am fed up with my sump. When I change my system which I will be doing when I go back to freshwater from salt water I will be using 2 canisters on an African Cichlid tank. The only issue I don't have is the noise issue. Mine is silent.
Stumbled over this. Came for aquarium tips, leaving with life lessons. Good job man. You have another fan for life.
Jay I've already got the twin cannister setup you mentioned. One cheap canister full of sponges and the other with a big pre filter full of sponges before an Oase biomaster thermo 600 with every available space full of seachem matrix. Had a few issues at home lately so neglected water changes for 3 weeks. My water was still crystal clear and water parameters spot on . Even the nitrate tested at only 15ppm. Not bad in an over stocked cichlid tank.
Great video again.
I watch all your videos Jay. This is easily one of my favs
I appreciate it 100%
Glad I clicked on your video today man hadn't seen any before and didn't know it'd take that twist but it was an amazing uplifting for me. Thank you
dude..... great video Subbed!!!
I’ve used sump and canisters and honestly I love fluval hang on back so much easier to take care of and my water never changes it’s always the same I do once a week water change and everything is healthy
Ok now you got me crying my friend. I need the motivations please keep them coming! Looking good!
I got you Gail
Super Enjoyed this video Jay!!!
Liked, shared, commented :)
Wow Jay this was A VERY, VERY GOOD VIDEO I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT 👍💯
This was my first video of your that I watched. Thanks for the insperation, and I will be back. Subscribed!!!
Thank you
Subbed. I’m not even running the same kind of tanks but excellent video. I’m coming back for more.
We find inspiration in some very unlikely places. When I first started watching your video I thought " this dude is a little out there." I did think I was going to find inspiration here I just wanted some others opinions. Man I can't begin to explain how much you actually just helped me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's been a very tuff year for everyone and I needed your words. Thank you brother! BTW I LOVE SPONGE FILTERS 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for this. I’m glad this is why I do what I do. ☺️
Great Video and Inspiring Story..sniff sniff... Your Awesome Dude!
Dude!!!! Sweet Shorts!!!!! Mahalo and Aloha from Maui, Hawaii!!!
dam an excellent video and story man I agree with you about which is the best filter for your tanks and fishes and etc. Hey, I see in the back of Comic in shelves man there looks fantastic man.
Thank you.
Greetings from the Uk. I came here as a distraction from sone personal stuff but actually gained an insight away from fishkeeping. Thank you and resoect Jay.
Great content. We are in competition with no one but what we think is best based on our own experiences in this hobby! Thanks for the upload! Great content as always Okla-home boy!
It's awesome to see your video..
Totally Agree ..Its a HOBBY and it's how i enjoy doing mine..
Plus your reasoning is absolutely RIGHT about the canister filter 👍
Great video jay keep up the sweet content and I agree with you rite now a canister filter works better for my setup as well over a sump
Spot on! On both the sump vs. canister filter and the lessen in life!!!!!!
I agree that you should always pick what works best for you... If you have a setup that you are not happy with then your enjoyment is down and actually lends for crapper maintenance. I personally do not have a sound/noise issue but my sump is fundamentally different in the design and it’s quieter... but they both work well enough that both are suitable systems. keep up the good videos
What's the best canister filter would you recommend Jay??
Nothing more relaxing and reassuring than the trickle of a sump! To each his own.
I am about to get a 220 Gallon tank and I plan on using two canister filters vs the sump
I like your attitude & totally agree with your opinion !!
You're so wrong. wrong wrong wrong. nah seriously dude love your videos and appreciate your opinions and thoughts lol. 2 years later newer viewers are still enjoying your content. that's a win!
So I was going to pick up chemi pure, but I’m not sure if I should get the elite , or the blue one , I have a 90 gallon African tank , any suggestions. Thanks. Keep up the great videos man
Blue
I love the video i to am a vet who loves aquariums. I love the fact you have your own opinions and of which make sence. Keep up the great vids.
Preach Jay. :)
I'm feeling the same way lately.
Love your videos
Show me how to properly setup afx6 canister filter . I have a old one and it burbs . The new ones shut off to correct the back pressure then start back up . Appreciate a response and help . Thank you .
Stitches, Jay!!! 😂😂😂 👍🏾
Thank you
Love the videos. When are they releasing the hw5000? I like canister filters because they service my 110 gallon well. I like storing my fish food and stuff in the cabinet under. At this point a sump would be an inconvenience
Great video 👍👍
Dang I need to be on what you on lol boi geeked
Life…. Straight life raw dogging
Killing the pink shorts!!! Love it!!
i just switched my entire fish room to a central air system! most of my large tanks are running matte filters and seven of the tall display tanks are switched to undergravel filters! goin back old school! haha
Undergravel filters may be old school but they are damn efficient...not only that but that area of the tank is low flow so you can harvest a lot of nitrate eating anaerobic bacteria there.
Jay great video. Someone had to say it and you did. Each person needs to do what is best for them and not what the masses say they need to do. Couple of things, 1 is there an estimate on when Northfin will have the flake out? Been waiting awhile for it because the quality will be so much better than what is out there now. And 2 never be sorry for getting emotional, it shows you are human and helps break the stereotype that men can't be emotional. Keep up the great work and look forward to whats to come.
Thanks John hopefully in about 2 weeks retailers will have it.
You’re brilliant Jay!
Thank you
Bro, you are freakin awesome. Entertaining and informative videos. and, you're such a tall Kermit! ;)
Lol thank you
I still use the pumps that you hang on the back or the filters or whatever they're called. I think they've been working pretty well for me and I just have to change the cartridge thing every six months or so.
Awesome!
Great video Jay, ive been tossing back on forth on the same issue. Sump or Canister. Just do what "you"-"i" want to do.
Lol I love watching your videos you do some great voices. I also love the info you give. I do saltwater right now and know where your coming from when it comes to the sump. I’m now getting ready to set up a fresh water shrimp tank and looking forward to easier filtration. You keep doing what you do 👍
Thank you
Cool video im Gina get one when can I buy one Jay
Well said video. Stay in your lane and run YOUR race. Everyone has a different race to run.
I'm sure the sump is gone by now, but if not how much are you wanting for it?
HI JAY. GREAT VIDEO. I'M 100% IN DOING WHAT WORKS FOR YOU BEST. BECAUSE WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT THINGS GOING ON IN OUR LIVES. I ALWAYS BELIEVE IF YOU CAN MAKE SOMETHING EASIER FOR YOURSELF AND STILL HAVE A HEALTHY AND PRISTINE TANK. YOUR DOING A GREAT JOB. THERES NO REASON TO MAKE THINGS HARDER AND MORE COMPLICATED.....GREAT VIDEO....KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK....
Not being an acquarists, or having owned a fancy smancy acquarium, however I did own an old style pump acquarium in the 1970’s, but from your conversation, you probably should use a larger size pump system?
Wow mate. That was great
I currently have 2 canister filters on my 125 gallon it works great for me and the fishies
I would like to get in the future a 300+ gallon, hence the interest in a sump
But still going back-and-forth on which would be better for that size of tank a canister or sump?
I agree.. took my sump off yesterday and replaced it with a fx4.. so much nicer and quiter..
I love this video. I agree wit everything you said. I’ve loved canister filters ever since I graduated from tank hangers. I never wanted the hassle of a sump system! I agree with everything you said.
And You’re really cute!
Canisters work for me too. I have rays breeding in a tank run on FX6s and I love them. PS Blue Jacket of the quarter, two quarters in a row here. I didn’t get it of the year though.
Love your vibe Jay. Sump trolls can be worse than northfin trolls! It took me a long time to figure out, quiet up, and tune up my sump. That is not the best set up, sumps can be WAY simpler than what you got going on. Canisters are easier for sure, but to truly get your fish nerdery on, one should master sumps....
Have a sump setup on a tank I purchased not to gone on it now need to find a way to change it all to an fx6
WOW mate what a set up you have. I have just got into the hobby with a fluval roma 125 ltr. I have took off the U3 internal filter and put on fluval 207 canister. My water is crystal and my fish are thriving. I have subbed I like what you have to say.
"Everyone is in competition with everyone" loved that bit of speech there Jay and advise dear friend nice one. Good luck in your hobbie and future.👍👌👊
Canisters have been my go too!!! They work the best for me. It was epic meeting you tonight at The Fish Hut of New Jersey!!!! Keep doing what you do bro. Love the content....all of it. Like I said tonight to you we get to see Jay in all his forms and that is the real deal. That validation to yourself is the key......I have had those moments and will continue to have them as I grow older and shift and change for the better and build upon myself. Rha is for being you. Thanks for being real. Thanks for sharing your love of this hobby and most of all love of life and the lessons you have learend!!! Holla!!! Sage trip to Naugatuck bro.
as long as ur happy after u clean ur canister or sump and ur fish are happy keep on keepen on
Yep I did this with my 180 running 2 fx6 and they are silent.
I use a gate valve to control water coming into the sump...dead quiet...no bubbles or gurgling noises. It's a vertical drop from the overflow into the sump with a PVC pipe and a coupler...and then the gate valve. I only hear the return pump, two mp40 power heads and the protein skimmer. Very quiet.
great video i was thinking about putting in a sump on my 90 gallon discus aquarium, after seeing this video ill stick with my 2-eheim 2217s. navy seabee retired
I agree with you. I run 2 fluval 407s on each of my 90 gallon discus tanks. I use pre filters on all the intakes which I customize my self, saves on filter maintenance. I run the biohome ultimate media and 4 inch sand beds in all my tanks, cut way down on nitrates. I like to keep nitrates at zero if I can. always wanted to try a sump but after watching your video im staying canister filters. great video
I thought you were going to go into a pole dance at the start, LOL. Hey, send me that sump! I love both sumps and cans. Sumps can be noisy but with durso's and other tricks I've quieted mine down (in the bedroom and I didn't want it too loud). A pre-filter on a canister intake and you'll wont have to touch those cans for months. Gotta go with what you enjoy that the trolls can take a hike.
Hit subscribed a while back, liked and commented lol. I've just added a large canister to my first marine tank....you can imagine how that goes down in the reefing community 😂. I don't see an issue as long as you are willing to put in the maintenance.
Hahahahaha thanks buddy
Are you still running a canister for youre reef? Im thinking about doing that.
I have always run a canister of some kind or the other. I had a HOB on my 75 gallon though. I wanted to change either to a sump or canister. Never had a sump, so I did a home build and you are correct, the NOISE is outrageous. The noise from the sump was bad, but the setup is next to my wife's computer and desk and the noise that came from her, complaining about the sump noise was OUTRAGEOUS. So, I wound up buying a fx6. I walk buy sometimes and have to feel the hose to make sure it's on, because it is silent.
LOL
I laughed and laughed and laughed at this. My husband has the exact same problem and HATES the trickling noise from my HOB filters. It drives him insane since he works from home. To the point he wears earplugs since every room has a tank in it.
I am wondering, (and have never read anyone else discussing this) - a sump takes water that is over-flowing from the top surface of the aquarium. A canister filter PULLs water from the CENTER of the water column. Crap & wastes don't float up to the top they sink to the bottom, or get stirred up from fish. Wouldn't then a canister filter be more effective at pulling in the wastes, as the intake pipe is closer to bottom & the wastes moving around?
In fact sumps are meant for marine tanks usually, or at least they were made for that, then lots of ppls started adapting them on stillwater
Great video bro i love both there both great i hve the fluval FX 400 great filter and the trigger sump is the best in my opinion
Hey Jay. What time you going to be at The Fish Hut? Looking to swing by.
Thanks...
A sump with filter socks, fluidized bed and large reservoir is the best. Once a week, just toss the filter socks in the washing machine, drain and refill the reservoir for the water change and you are done. I fill my reservoir with tap water and let the heater warm it up before I turn the pumps back on.
A fluidized bed filter powered by air stones needs minimal maintenance, just make sure the air stones are working properly.
I enjoy your video. and your words.
jay i love canister filters.and yes for the most part they are quiet,i hate dripping water sounds.love the video
