    1:01:30 In the ps2 version, this guy in the locker is making loud crazy banging and breathing sounds. Maybe they changed it for the PC version? Or maybe it was some glitch... I agree that silence would have been an eerie spin on that scene, but that's not how it was originally.

    I have to disagree with you about the SH3 story not being as deep as SH2's. SH3 is about the process of a teenage girl becoming a woman. It's about the inherent fears young women can have about fear of adults (the cult), coming of age, adulthood, sexuality, loss of innocence, pregnancy, giving birth, being taken advantage of, and being alone. You can really see Heather's transformation as a character as the story progresses, and by the end of the game, she is a fully complete (after uniting with her other half), fully capable, independant woman, finally able to go her own way in life, and live free of the cult (the adults that took advantage of a young defenseless girl, and broke her trust in them).

    • @BadGhosts
      @BadGhosts  Před rokem +36

      Hey, thanks for watching!
      Respect the disagreement, each to their own. I've heard Tangomushi's video is really good on the story side of things (coming from a female point of view) - she's great, highly recommend watching it.

      I agree with you. SH3 always affected me most because I'm a woman with a lifetime of abuse. Growing up female was like my own personal Silent Hill. I LOVE SH2, but it doesn't have that extra layer of fear in being able to relate to the trauma of it.

    • @Azelja
      @Azelja Před 7 měsíci +5

      I think that's the point though. That's why the original games have very specific types of individuals. Some people have experienced those things and others haven't. As a man, I couldn't even begin to imagine some of the hardships some women face. I've had a lot of female friends growing up and been horrified by some of the stories I was told. For me though, James resonates more. Not just because he's male either. I've experienced what it's like to love someone, yet simultaneously hate them. Also wishing you could go back and try again. I will say though, the aspect I enjoyed most about SH2 was because of that. It's a very human failing. Then again, you could claim Heather's nightmares stemmed from that very same concept if you'd take away all the intrigue around the cult.

    • @thunderclanliveson1
      @thunderclanliveson1 Před 6 měsíci +2

      I love both separately, SH2 trauma because I relate to James wife for the fear that my chronic illness will one day take that happiness away from me and that'll inevitably be my future honestly--ill die in the hospital due to it and I'll never be happy. If I ever get someone they'll be miserable because of me.
      I love SH3 exactly because of Heather and her coming of age story essentially. As a woman, she's a beautiful character and she truly is a strong character and a wonderful teen to woman teacher.

    One of my favorite little details about SH3 are Harry’s notes you can find which he used as a save points in the first game. When I connected two and two that his motivation for writing notes “saving” was so that it might help any others in his situation and the notes in the same location in SH3. I went nuts.
    It was such an amazing callback to the previous game. It was placed so subtlety and naturally. It’s such a minor detail and makes it that much more endearing. I loved finding remnants of Harry (and what he wrote) as Heather has to navigate the same hellscape.

    I do think it's interesting around 30:00 he notes that a 'ghost' pushes Cheryl into the subway "just to mess with her" for "no other reason", while a different CZcamsr, whose a woman, has pointed out the theme of stalking this game and how as women we have a looming fear of being stalked and how common it is to be stalked. The person in the subway isn't some ghost, it's one of the stalkers that has been plaguing Cheryl, following her around and tormenting her. From the Detective that wont leave her alone to the man in the hospital leaving her suggestive notes, the presence of being watched is constant. Great video overall, I just found that really interesting, the two viewpoints especially from a man's viewpoint who hasn't gone through or doesn't have the same fears a teenage girl might have.

      Makes a lot of sense, honestly. If it's the one I'm thinking of (haven't watched it yet) I'm actually really glad Tango made that video - it's for that exact reason I specifically decided to not get into the more nitty gritty stuff with how Heather's body is used by the cult and the more explicit side of that.
      I'm glad to see a female creator discuss that side of things with a lot more insight and perspective. It didn't really feel like the sort of thing I could truly do justice.

    i really feel like people dont give silent hill 3's story enough credit. the cult is kinda just the framing to tell the story of a young girl fighting over ownership of her own body against a society that literally views it as a mechanism for birth. it's also about this girl who, while already having a colorful personality, is learning about who she is and having to grow up fast in response to the world and people around her, or the lack thereof (RIP harry). there's this constant theme of people using her for their own ends. obviously, claudia and the cult are trying to use her to birth their god, but beyond that. vincent originally planned to kill her because her existence posed a threat to his way of life. douglas followed her around despite clearly making her uncomfortable (yes he had a job to do, but still. the only thing that gave him pause was entering the women's bathroom). even harry tried to make her into the daughter he once had, and at times considered ridding himself of her because of the emotional baggage that came with her.
    people jump into the deeper meanings of silent hill 2's characters and themes but for some reason don't always extend that same energy to silent hill 3, which is just sad!!

      Yes, this story just hits different when you have been a teenage girl yourself. The stalking, the way people want to tell you what to do with your body...it's all too real for do many girls Heathers age. There definitely is a deeper meaning to the story than just " haha, spooky cult, scary monsters"

    • @BadGhosts
      @BadGhosts  Před rokem +2

      @@TheMissileHappy To be honest, this is exactly why I (at 57:23) mentioned that I wasn't going to get more into the way Heather's femininity is treated throughout the game. It's not to say that I don't acknowledge it, I even had an entire section scripted out at one point, but it soon became apparent that I wasn't speaking from a point of view that 100% understands. Instead, I chose to cover SH3 on a general basis rather than zero in on a subject I probably have no authority to be speaking on.
      Fortunately, Tangomushi has done exactly that - highly recommend checking her video out, it's been mentioned in the comments quite a few times now (and for good reason).

    Your Silent Hill 2 retrospective is definitely my all-time favorite Silent Hill 2 analysis video. The way you conveyed your love, passion and care for the game and its story and characters in that video was truly remarkable and beats any other video covering the game for me. This video, despite the fact that SH3 is game you had a far less personal connection with, I still feel that you handled talking about the game very well. The editing is yet again very good, and you brought up and made clear the differences between SH2 and SH3 very accurately. I too agree that I prefer the characters and story of SH2, but that SH3 has the better feeling of horror, and a bigger sense of helplessness as the game seems to be toying with you at almost every turn.
    I do wish that despite the story of SH2 being more profound/less shallow than a so called "just another cult themed story that does not have much depth" - you would have talked about the potential and possible bigger underlying layers of Heather's character/psyche in relation to her version of the town and situation. I feel that there is a lot more to talk about than just her snarky/sharp attitude and definitely more to focus on when it comes to her own emotional and psychological issues that stem from the death of her father, lack of a mother figure, and that there is likely a reason for her "stranger danger" attitude. I do know that you briefly touched upon her mourning her father, and I do want to note that you beautifully depicted the contrast of the moments where Heather was focused on her hatred/revenge, had a moment of relief once the God was killed, and only *then* really started her mourning process/truly realized that she was repressing her sadness and grief, and that is something I definitely commend you for. But I feel that Heather's psyche is more complicated than that and there is more to be found. I feel the story tells a lot about womanhood as a whole and aims to bring a certain perspective on this topic, and shows topics such as the process of a woman going through different stages in a human life (teenhood to adulthood). It seems to touch on the dangers that come from simply being a woman, take the forced pregnancy topic, multiple stalking examples (stanley, random ghost watching her and pushing her on the tracks, the ominous and horrifying phone call), Heather's certain attitude towards any and all strangers that they should be avoided/almost disregarded in their entirety, because that is often what women are taught to do - and when you consider these elements I do feel that the story seems to be much more complex than just that surface level of "stop the evil cult that killed your father."
    Now I'm not saying that after watching your video, I believe *that* to be the gist of everything you've said/covered, because I know that you too have talked about this game at a much deeper level than just that. But I do think that certain elements, especially surrounding Heather's psyche and character, could have been covered more profoundly by taking a closer look at certain things, or just were not really talked about at all.
    Again, that is not to say that this video in any way shape or form is bad, or missed the mark. Yet again you've covered one of the mainline Silent Hill entries with such grace and have put down a super high quality video that any fan of the franchise can and will appreciate. I was just kind of secretely hoping that even with this game, you would have taken a closer look at the Characters' psyches/the fine details about them and what makes them tick. And I know that, to be frank, the only character that even stands a chance of undergoing such scrutiny and actually resulting in an interesting character profile, is Heather, as, like you said, other characters in this game can be quite bland/underwhelming. (Take Claudia, or Douglas since you indeed do spend too little physical time with him unlike Maria in SH2, leading in not feeling very connected to/with him) - but if the only character that would be talked about in this way would be Heather, that would still make for a very interesting video segment, especially gven the fact that not many people really seem to talk about her in such a manner, whereas with James, every single SH analysis video will. (Not as good as in your SH2 video though, might I add, haha ;b)
    In any case, the video was very enjoyable to watch and I was stoked to see that you had uploaded it. I would more than love to one day see that you uploaded a retrospective for Silent Hll 4, and hear your thoughts on that game. Take care and thanks for the effort yet again.

    • @BadGhosts
      @BadGhosts  Před rokem +3

      Hey there - thanks so much for such a detailed comment, and for the kinds words!
      I'll be completely honest, I agree on virtually all points - there are plenty of things I could have delved further into. If I had extended the video by another 30 minutes to an hour I would have probably done so, and I definitely would have been proud of those inclusions, but there was a ton of IRL stuff that went on in the background of the three months I spent making this video. It was honestly something of a miracle that I managed to finish the video in its current state, there was just way too much going on.
      Aside from that, I've also become super burned out with CZcams in general as well, so I'm taking an extended break from making reviews for at least a few months. I really don't know when the next video will be made, but I DO plan on covering Silent Hill 4.

    I was in my very formative years of life when I first encountered the franchise, and it was interactions with Silent Hill 3 that I almost exclusively experienced.
    While it scared me, it built up a mythological outlook on Heather, and the aesthetic of the town. When Silent Hill fell into general obscurity, it did for me as well. Aside from Silent Hill 3, the only other SH experience I had was a snippet in a game informer magazine for Downpour in 2010 or 2011. Then it disappeared to me.
    Roughly in 2020, when the Silent Hill DLC came to Dead By Daylight, I was introduced to DBD for the first time, and re-introduced to the world of Silent Hill, especially the third entry, its mythological status cemented in my mind. I proceeded to become obsessed with the franchise, consuming every bit of media surrounding the series that I could. I began to collect the games to play them to their fullest extent, replayed them, and replayed them again. I fell head over heels for Silent Hill, and it was Silent Hill 3 that captured me the most. It felt lost, gritty, and as rebellious as it was bloody. I still can’t place it, but Heather resonated with me on a personal level. I identified with her in such a deep and interpersonal way that she’s rapidly become my favorite fictional character of all time, and has only cemented her place there since then, despite the fact that I’m a guy. I identify with her so inexplicably strongly.
    It was my infatuation with the world of Silent Hill that encouraged me to experience more than I had before. Growing up, I was fairly exclusive to Halo. The combination of Silent Hill’s resurgence into gradual relevance, and Halo’s progressive downfall into terrible and mediocre releases, that made me receptive to new content. Silent Hill was my gateway into more horror games, getting me to actually play Resident Evil, and Dead Space. It made me aware of how deep and compelling Japanese horror could become, encouraging me to progress into more Asian content, like Ringu, and Sweet Home. Experiencing new content allowed me to get into other genres and games I hadn’t tried before as well, like Assassin’s Creed, Yakuza, and Elder Scrolls. There’s also that super fun Silent Hill mod for Fallout 4.
    You have managed to encapsulate my fascination and morbid passion in this video for Silent Hill 3 specifically. You’ve actually put into words many of my own thoughts for this game. How it is the world itself that attracts me so greatly. The story, the characters, it realistically would fall painfully short if they didn’t have the world, soundtrack, and atmosphere that it does. Combined, it makes a violent, aggressive, and terrifying world that at the same time is vaguely nostalgic, strangely comforting, yet oppressive and suffocating. Maybe I’m just weird, but Silent Hill 3 brings me a sense of comfort and security that other games simply can’t bring, not even Halo 2, previously my favorite game of all time, or Resident Evil 4 (original), a rising star in my catalogue of favorite video game experiences. The rebellious energy of Heather and the early 2000’s vibe, the horrific imagery of the Otherworld, the deeper psychological meaning, it all works flawlessly together. My love for this franchise has allowed me to influence my friends, many of whom originally saw the series as gross, edgy, and full of mindless violence. I’ve managed to educate them about the game on a deeper level, instilling an admitted appreciation for the series (though my friends are too scared to actually play it, electing to experience it vicariously through me instead).
    Long-winded rant in conclusion, thank you for this video. It was well-put, entertaining, and reflected many of my own thoughts and opinions on both this game, and the others surrounding it. I saw your Silent Hill 2 video when it came out two years ago relative to this one, and it was worth watching your entry on the third title. Keep up the good work, and thanks again!

    Great video. I have to watch your SH2 video.
    Regarding the lack of screen time for the characters, it may have something to do with the "stranger danger" theme the game seems to convey. After all, Claudia, Vincent and even Douglas are just that : strangers. A bunch of unknown adults who want something from Heather, just like the Subway Ghost or the Hospital Stalker.
    And for the characters to remain strangers in our eyes, well the game can't say much about them or let us spend too much time with them.

    I think it's very interesting how gender can shape horror. Things you point out as senseless (example, the ghost pushing Heather onto the tracks) are very real and terrifying fears for women, and female CZcamsrs point to those scenes as the scariest ones.
    Not a dig at all, it's just very curious how society and gender can shape what's terrifying in very subtle ways. Really good video!

    One of the best things about this game is the message of Fatherhood. Harry fighted monsters, a cult and a fake god because he loved his daughther so much he could give his own life. When Cheryl reicarnated, we can see on the notes that at first he wasnt sure of raising Heather, but then he comes to the conclusition that it doestn matter if that baby is his daughtger or not because that baby needs someone, and what's better than a man that will fight for you even if things get worse?
    And we can see in Heather that she Harry's fatherhood was perfect because Heather is a strong woman and how happpy she seems when she talks to him on the beginning. And by stoppimg the fake god again, she pretty much saved the world
    Then we have Claudia, who is the opposite on this situation, Claudia had an awfull father that abused her, giving her the desire of a world without suffering, and she refuses to let the past go. She thinks that Alessa will fix all of her issues so bad that she kills a man expecting that would help her. Her trauma is really sad, and i wonder if her having the same VA as Angela, who also suffered abuse, was intentional.
    As someone who wants to be a good dad when the time comes, this game and some other works of art meade me realize how implrtant fatherhood is, and i hope to be a good dad like Harry

Something you said kind of resonated with me and I kind of don't know whether 1. This game has ruined all the intense feeling I could get from horror for over 20 years or 2. That I have a strong composition and this game is that much of a masterpiece that I can't physically control my state of mind whilst playing it.

    I'm fortunate I played this game during its release - around the time when Internet was mostly dial-up and limited lol. So I was able to play SH3 completely blind and not have it spoiled for me. This made following the narrative even MORE exciting for me, especially as a SH veteran gamer. I initially thought SH3 would be another self-contained story, like SH2 had been. At the time of its release, the marketing for SH3 had intentionally avoided giving away Heather's true identity - she was treated as this 'new' character. So just imagine playing SH3 with NO expectations that this was a true sequel and learning you are playing as Harry's daughter as you progress further into the game! For myself, I long suspected this was the case after numerously playing SH2's demo prior to its official release. Learning Heather's true identity just motivated me to continue playing and hoping to see my Harry again (needless to say, I got my wish... ;-; ).
    I know at the time of SH3's release people complained about this game not being as ambiguous, ambitious, and psychologically driven as SH2. But SH3 was never meant to be another SH2 (in the same way SH2 was never meant to be another SH1). SH3's focus and strengths rests in its characters, relationships, and innate fears of womanhood (which, admittedly, may fly off the heads of many male gamers who aren't accustomed to the female experience). I'm glad many gamers are picking up this title for the first time or revisiting it after many years since they are finally seeing what I saw during my first playthrough. And I hope the same could be said for Silent Hill The Room too (which probably terrifies me the most out of all the SH titles, specifically the fear corrupting the one place we're supposed to feel safe at - home).

  • @doomraven0

    SH3 is truly a great experience, especially as a horror fan. It is very terrifying and i completely agree that the sound design in this one is the best of the first 3 even though the first two were fantastic as well.
    When i think of 3, those freaking bunnies at the beginning are downright awful and iconic to my nightmares. I also love the brilliant homage the creators of the game made in the haunted house at the amusement park that the narrator sounds like Vincent Price. Genius.
    Side note: Silent Hill 1 WAS already remade. On the Wii and it was actually a pretty damn good remake, even more terrifying because there was no combat.

    30:30-30:48 That didn’t happen for just no reason. You weren’t paying attention to what you were reading. The reason you get pushed onto the tracks only if you read the article is because it’s about someone dying on the tracks. The nightmare world is Heather’s manifestation of her fears. She gained a newfound fear of falling on to the tracks after reading that article and it got manifested. Amazing video though! I'd noticed the newspaper and pieced together the connection (and understood the basis of the 'ghost pushing incident' etc etc), but while scripting it was more fun to highlight it as one of the more seemingly random encounters of the game.

    SH3 may not have a deep story but by god is it rich in symbolism. Seriously, with james you can basically sum up his monsters as "can you can it with that wife of yours already?!" as each and every one of them is tied into that. Yes, it's very focused in theme but if you tell me it didn't result in a rather dull ensemble of beasties you are lying. Anyone remember the Mandarin? The creeper? Anything but the lying figure-mannequin-nurse trifecta and PH? Maybe the abstract daddy for just how gross it is?
    Meanwhile 3 gives you a tonna monsters that tie into various themes and have multiple interpretations. Many have compared the Numb Bodies to fetuses, but to me they always came across more like the nebbish "nice guys" heather would have had to deal with as a girl. Their name's a hint too, "nobodies". Sure, they start only as a major nuisance but like every girl is made painfully aware, that can change with time, becoming a larger, actual threat. And don't get me started on the closers.
    There's quite a bit to sink your teeth into in the symbolism of this game, and the way it reflects an almost relationship between the town and Heather. Almost like the town is a large idiot child, toying with heather for its amusement.

    Also I don’t think it’s unusual to forget things about games and other media unless making a point of regularly replaying them. At least that’s my experience. Like I played MGS 2 but don’t really replay it so I have the shape of it in my mind but the particulars escape me.
    Which kinda works out because if I ever want to replay something it’ll be like experiencing parts of it anew.
