Some other details that highlight Revali's prickly attitude.
-Rito only live about 50 years. So none of the Rito currently alive, were back when Revali was
-Additionally Revali was the only champion who wasn't given a monument. They preserved his Bow as to be given the most skilled archer of their people but that's it.
-In the lore sections that focus on Revali's training ground we can see that no one else went there with him, he trained alone and was only celebrated because he kept pushing the limits of what Rito could do. He had to keep pushing himself to be the best because it was the only thing that made people notice him. Being a goal to strive for.
-His attitude with Link is easy to understand when you take how hard Revali pushed himself then see's that Link would surpass him solely because a magic sword said so. If your entire life/notoriety is based on being the best but someone else is granted it by divine right, you would feel negatively.
-Revali is always looking for things that Link can't do successfully, he needs Link to fail to "humanize" him. Which also reflects his frustration that everyone else gravitates to and enjoys Link's company. Why is even that so easy for Link, when Revali has to work so hard.
I'd like to specify that yes Revali would be a better person without the stick up his ass. Yet he becomes a more complex character because these facts.

Also, since rito live about half as long as Hylians (the average Hylian living to 100 years or so), legends and stories passed down from rito to rito would become questionable in resources much more quickly. It’s very possible that, in Revali’s mind, the ‘sword that seal the darkness’ is a baseless legend. Just a stupid Hylian legend that the people of Hyrule are grasping onto for hope instead of turning to actual, real life heroes. When you look at it that way, it’s even more understandable why he would be skeptical.

I'd like to add that Revali is shown to be very good with kids- from the building of the flight range for training, to sidequest dialogue in AoC, and his interactions with Tulin in the Guardian of Remembrance DLC. He looks out for the next generation, because he didn't have that kind of guiding force himself growing up.
Revali is also still a kid himself, as he's still got those cheek markings the other young rito have, so he still had room to grow before his life was taken. So his more brash personality is also in part due to some teenage moodiness.

I am under the impression that at some point in his life, probably a series of continuous circumstances with others, Revali got the impression that self worth was obtained through external means, rather than creating inner self worth, and knowing he is enough as an individual just as he is. It's as if he is under the belief that he will be rejected and replaced if anyone can accomplish more than him, as in, he will not be needed anymore, and the feeling of being needed to that extent is something that comes from abandonment issues and serious insecurities that corrupt an individuals perceptions, and how they interpret almost everything. It is like being in constant survival mode, but instead of starving for food, he is starving for self worth.

My guess would be the only time he really ever really felt like anyone noticed him was when he did great at archery or flying. This would be what drove him to excel, so that other people would keep noticing him and in the end it kind of worked, he became the Rito champion and got all the attention. But then he had four other people as exceptional as he is including one who overshadowed him and everyone seemed to like MORE despite not seeming to try like he does. Its petty, selfish and quite vain but it would explain why Link in particular irks him, Revali is a champion, Link is THE champion.

  • @verdantmistral442
    @verdantmistral442 Před 2 lety +168

Revali's journal read like he wanted validation of his skills. In particular, his writing about Link seeped with "I want this guy to think I'm cool" vibes. And the fact Link never said anything or reacted in any way seemed to agitate him more than anything else. He wanted some kind of approval from Link and not being able to get it bothered him. Part of this is likely because Link was the chosen hero, a person who was destined to be great. If Revali could get Link to see him as a peer then he'd be getting approval from the legendary warrior himself.
Link, however, was likely impressed but he had his own issues he was dealing with which were ironically the equivalent opposite to Revali's.

    @JustAWildSkullKid Před 2 lety +119

    Ahh this is my jam.
I personally agree on the fact that he was lonely but not necessarily on the fact that he is lonely because he has no family. Yes that might be the case but I think there's more.
I think that the main reason why Revali acts the way he does is because he's insecure, so much so that he chooses to train in a place in the middle of nowhere, alone, and doesn't want anyone to see him while training and possibly failing (this is why he gets all salty with Zelda when she goes to speak with him). He's insecure and believes that the only way for him to get some sort of love and attention or simply appreciation is to simply be the best. Arrogance itself is more often than not a disguise for insecurity.
Now, about his attitude towards Link and the other Champions.
It's not shown that he behaves badly with other Champions, just that he tries to be with them as little as possible and that he doesn't really like the entire situation, but this is mainly because everything reminds him of the fact that in the end it's all about Link.
And I don't think that he only hates Link out of pure jealousy, I think that he hates him because in his eyes he did nothing to deserve to be where he is. In his eyes, he's just a random guy who got lucky to be chosen by a magic sword, (which is not true but he doesn't know that), while he trained for hours every day and still does, sheds blood, sweat and tears to be as good as he is, only to be a "sidekick". After all, he's the only one who wasn't "gifted" his ability, but rather created it himself from scratch.
This is also confirmed by his change in mood when saved, he's not as arrogant as before but rather tries to act proud while you can see that he's thankful. The voice actor there did an amazing job. Also, he adds that link is "worthy" of Revali's Gale, and I think it's a great step forward. There's some character development here.
So here you have it, enjoy! 😂

Honestly I always got the impression that Revali boasted a big ego because deep down he had at least some kind of insecurities about himself. That’s how most egotistical people work. I can definitely see him having always been a loner with seemingly no family or support system to speak of. If anything this kind of makes him feel like even more of a tragic character to me personally. He ended up dying without ever having anybody close to him in his life. The most of a legacy he left behind was just that of being the hero/champion of his village and that’s it. At least now his spirit is at peace and he even managed to acknowledge Link…kinda lol. It’s likely that the Champions might not return in the sequel, but even so it’d be nice to get to learn a bit more about their pasts in the coming sequel.

Like I mentioned in the comments for the last Revali video, he is a lancer character type. I don't think enough people realize this. He is the reflection of what the main character could have been like, under different conditions. Revali and Link both trained hard. They were both chosen for important positions. The fact that we get so little about Link's family, beyond a comment from Zelda and a photograph, suggests that ties to his family were not strong either. (Perhaps Link started training at such a young age, he might as well have been an orphan.) Being a lancer character, means not only that we get more context about Link, but that they are still friends/team mates, and they both get to develop separately, without the whole Joker vs Batman, arch nemesis, rivalry. A lancer provides a rivalry where both characters ultimately become better.

Arrogant characters have always stood out to me as interesting, and they're usually some of my favorite characters from whatever they're in. Though, for me it's also important for them to have the skill to back up their claims, and not just be arrogant about skills they don't have. Revali is the best (known) archer of all the Rito, and he knows it, and he finds it so frustrating that anybody thinks themselves better than him. As you mentioned, this is probably also because of his insecurities, and I'm sure Link getting chosen as the hero didn't help that. Ever since Breath of The Wild came out I've loved this arrogant little shit of a bird boy, and I hope that we haven't seen the last of him

I do like Revali. Maybe he isn’t my favorite character, but i can understand why people like him. He is very relatable in certain aspects. He always wants to push himself to try harder, something a lot of us want and struggle with not thinking we’re good enough.
The reason why I think he’s so rude to other is because of his upbringing as you said. If he felt alone all his life, he would feel like he had to achieve everything by himself. That’s probably why he despises link. Link probably had a pretty nice life with his dad being a great soldier and that he was pure enough to draw the master sword. But of course he also had great talent. But Revali only thought that Link got handed everything for free, no work needed. Due to his ideology, That’s why Revali hates him.

  • @TanikaNuva

I think the reason Revali doesn't like the other champions is because all of their abilities were things they were born with, where Revali worked for years to create and master his gale himself. so when Link shows up it looks to him like the only reason he was chosen was because he happened to have a fancy sword, and he didn't have to actually work hard and prove himself like Revali did.

I think that another factor is that he was likely still a teenager around the time of the Calamity as she does act rather emotionally immature and more worried about what other people will think of him as opposed to the other adults among the champions who are more secure in themselves like Urbosa, Daruk, and even his successor Teba. And then there's Urbosa's diary which states that he is part of the youngest generation of Rito, yes likely on the older end of it which would still pin him as a teenager. So (maybe) being an orphan compounded with the insecurities that come with being a teenager and not having anyone to help him through it would explain why he's a jerk.

    Revali is my absolute favorite.
For one, he has a very complex personality and I, as a 12 year old kid who absolutely loves the subject of psychology, think it’s fun to try to make analytics of his personality.
I, for one, love how he’s implied to be great with kids, based on the AoC DLC, and I also read “Creating a Champion.” It stated that he later on opened the flight range for a practice space to little kids. He seems to have a soft spot for them.
Also, he’s portrayed to have no friends or family, thus having no real motivation besides being the very best. Urbosa was surrounded by the support of her people and had very close friends, Daruk had close friends as well who supported him every step of the way, and Mipha had the love and support of her family to help her through. Revali may have been envious of this, the fact that they had what he needed (without knowing it) the entire time. He’s very lonely. Not to mention, they had not nearly as much trouble developing their powers as he did. He was portrayed to have trained harder than anyone helse. Despite this, not nearly as many people knew his name, not nearly as many people liked him as much as the others.
Link was the main part of this quest, only because a magic sword had chosen his destiny.
In a sense, he has a few similarities to the princess. Both are a little lonely, both have trouble being themselves, both had trouble developing and unlocking their powers, both feel negative emotions when comparing themselves to Link, and so on, and so on. I’d like to see them become a pair at some point (just as friends, perhaps.), I wonder how that would go.

I have always loved Revali, I could easily read him and understand him as soon as I "met" him in game. You can tell that he is fragile and trying to show strength the only way he knows how. One thing I thought of while watching this is something relatable to myself- he wasn't like every other child around him growing up, so when he found out he was good at something (archery), he was praised and he took that to heart, he was "the best" at this time. This then led to this small feat becoming part of his personality (to succeed) but when others grew to his level, he would feel unsettled and threatened, he lost his identity. The only way to keep his only form of identity was to keep training, to keep working until he WAS the best fighter, and this is what he did. I feel like Revali pre-emptively strikes at individuals to protect himself rather than risk the chance that they hurt him. You're my special rito, Revali- you're good enough as yourself, don't worry.

I think another interesting point (that has been said many times by Revali fans, myself included) could be that it seems all of the other champions are born with their powers, and they were, in some way born into power. Revali on the other hand, was probably an outcast, and through the champions ballad dlc, we can see how hard he pushed himself to not only create Revali's Gale, but also master it. He *became* the pride of the Rito by working to become it. This can be seen a bit in his diary, but I'd imagine that he either looks down on or is jealous of the other champions, especially Link (which I will get to in a minute) *because* they were born into it, he thinks that they didn't work for it, at least not as hard as himself. Going with that, his attitude towards Link in particular could be because Link is treated like the hero of Hyrule, the greatest champion, he gets the most recognition. And again, as far as Revali is aware, that's only because of the Master Sword. (Not to mention that a lot of, if not all of, the Ganon fight can be done with a bow) He doesn't want to be sidelined for some random Hylian that just so happened to pull a sword from a stone, because he thinks that it'll undermine his dedication and skill. It will take some of the credit from him to give to Link. And in a way, this is true. Not to mention he's probably really insecure. Anyway, all this to say, he takes out his frustration that the other champions were born with abilities and power and he wasn't on Link, in the form of verbal jabs and general attitude.

I really like Revali mostly because he deserved better as a character. He isn’t given enough characterization. The least of all the champions imo. I feel like one line that could have fixed him is “I finally have someone to compete against.” Him having a hidden gratitude in addition to his resentment would have made sense to me. I feel like he designed Revali’s Gale because he had no one left to compete against other than himself. He likes Zelda as a person because she has a power within her that has nothing to do with his ability as a warrior. The constant preening of himself towards Link would have been better if post mortem Revali wanted Link to keep growing stronger because “you’ll have to prove you’re as good as me to defeat Ganon”.

There's also the thing that he's the only champion that actually WORKED to get his ability. All of the others were born with them (to our knowledge at least) and Link was CHOSEN BY THE GODS. That would explain his jealousie towards him and the way he feels a certain pity towards the princess, who was in a similar situation. He had to train to defeat the rito's one weakness: not being able to ascend on their own, and having to use natural airdrafts. But then he just becomes a sidekick for a boy who he thought never worked a day in his life.
That also why all of the rito praise him: he litterally trained up to beating evolution
Anyways, I hope you liked my tedtalk

I have a lot of conflicting feelings on Revali
I definitely agree that people very rarely have issues that pronounced without a reason
At the same time he is responsible for his own actions and how he treats people
Having been treated badly doesn't give you a free pass to treat others badly
I definitely think that Revali needed more close connections in his life, but he was the one pushing people away
The Champions *did* accept him as one of their own- but that isn't enough to make a person want to change and put in the effort to make those connections
With the odds they were facing it wouldn't have made a difference in the end but certainly that kind of an ego can be *hugely* detrimental to teams and the like and could've seriously caused major issues
But the fact is he didn't get a chance after all this to mature with age, none of the 4 Champions got the opportunity to live through the Calamity and grow as people afterwards
This isn't very elegant and there's not a final Point but I'm pretty much in agreement with a lot of what HG said- they're reasons, not excuses
There's definite reasons to sympathize with Revali, but at the same time you can't just be a dick to everyone and expect that not to affect their opinions on you
I'm not filled with a bitter, vengeful rage towards the guy (and I don't think Link is either, he's chill, he cares about these folks) but definitely I'm not a fan and will continue to be annoyed by his jerkish behavior and arrogance

I wholeheartedly agree with what you say in this video, as far as we know, Revali is an orphan who's had to fight for his life and for the respect of those around him, and growing up without a family does cause a lot of problems. I would also like to note a couple of things. First, Revali is never even remotely as rude to the other champions or Zelda as he is to Link. People always try to say he is, but there's literally no example of it? It's just Link that gets this. Link is a special case because, as he states in his diary, Link didn't speak to him or acknowledge him as a warrior, and he didn't react to or acknowledge his gale. This REALLY upset Revali and his self worth/self image, he felt Link was being 'better than thou' and esessinatly saying, without saying, 'you are not my equal and never will be.' And when you add on top his insecurity and jealously towards Link's position as the Hero, weeellll....We have Revali treating Link like he does. Also ALSO, and I'm sure this has been mentioned in another comment, but Revali is MUCH different in the original Japanese script. He's not nearly as mean, and he does in fact admit in the end that Link is talented and special and they key for all their survival. Just thought I'd throw that out there. There was no mention of him just being lucky. Anyway, thanks for all the Revali content, he's honestly my favorite video game character ever, from any series, so I love to see it!! Thank you!

There is another detail I almost fainted when I noticed about Revali:
See the red marks on his face?
Only seven ritos have them: Tulin, Molly, Kheel, Genli, Cree, Notts and Kotts. No one else, not any of the adult ritos. ONLY the children. It can be that ritos lose these marks when they mature up.
This also means Revali could have been a f***ing CHILD all along.
Considering nature, in special birds, they normally mature after four or so years (it can be even less if the species of the bird is one that reproduces quickly, like pigeons or sparrows, they mature in weeks, but I'm assuming, seeing the size of Rito's community, this doesn't looks like it's their case). Now let me say, four years looks like a good childhood timespan for a parrot, I guess, but it's a terribly short time in human/hylian/sheikah/gerudo/goron/or-even-worse-the-zoras's standarts. Anyone of those species at that age is still a child. A baby in some cases.
Many birds have inmaturity signs... a different plumage, colors, marks they lose or get, some can change drastically after maturing.
However, the fact Revali still had these marks when only the children have them too, can very well mean Revali was LESS THAN FOUR or so years old when Zelda recruited him, just hitting his growning sprout.
Let's get real: Less than four is not enough time to have lived, and I totally agree with your theory of Revali being an orphan, so, he could very well have been just a revolting child still trying to understand why nobody loved him, still figuring out why the others had families in Rito Village and not him, even after all he did for them.
It's very sad, and the fact he could have been this young truly makes his death even worse. Mipha, Daruk and Urbosa at least lived long fulfilling lives, but Revali didn't even had the time to fully mature into an adult before being murdered himself.

There was a kid in my school who was really popular but he also kinda grew an ego. He was popular beacuse he was good at football and was fast and from what I gather from girls, attractive. I mean he mellowed out as we got older but I got a similar vibe from Revali. Like maybe he was talented at flying or archery at such a young age that all his friends thought he was cool and this only boosted his ego. Instead of mellowing out however he just got worse and belived he was the best there was. He sees Link, someone he doesn't really know that wll and from what he can tell, he was just chosen by fate to pull out the Master Sword. We see evidence of this when he says "because you happen to have that darkness sealing sword on your back". The fact that he sees Link as someone chosen and not skilled he is annoyed that he is given the role as Zelda's Knight and not him since he believes he is truly the best. Also everyone else seems to love Link and respect him and Revali is jealous he isn't getting the attention he once got and now Link is more in the spotlight. If we combine this with what you said, maybe he was an orphan, if so he doesn't have anyone to teach him to grow out of this childish behaviour and takes it into adulthood.
Maybe I am thinking to deep into it, maybe he is simply jealous and nothing more but I like Revali as there is a lot you can theorise and I like that he doesn't just unconditionally respect Link like everyone else. Adds a cool dynamic.

I’d also add onto this that Revali always struck me as someone perpetually trying to impress the teacher. I always got the feeling that growing up, he was an orphan and his only close personal relationship was to mentor figures who were primarily interested in developing his skills. If the only way he could get any kind of affection or affirmation growing up was through demonstrating his talent, then it makes sense why he’d become some big showboating asshole obsessed with achievement. It also explains why he feels so threatened by a perceived rival since him being the best was literally the only claim he had to his mentors’ affection.
I find it notable that even when Revali talks, he speaks in this refined, super affected manner, as if he’s trying to show off verbal maneuvers the same way he does aerial maneuvers. Like bro, who are you trying to impress here? Your English teacher has been dead for 80 years.

  • @AzurePip
    @AzurePip Před 2 lety +2

While this is an interesting theory, I believe Revali's spiteful behavior toward Link derives from his personal ego. Seeing himself as the most skilled archer and warrior among the Rito, it's possible he believes that only those who have shown exceptional skill and expertise should be dubbed Champion. It's also possible he may despise humans in general, believing them to not have rightfully earned their titles and positions through hard work like him. He carries a grudge with Link due to how he doesn't consider him worthy and thinks the only reason he is a fellow Champion is all due to him wielding the Master Sword, regardless of whether he can truly use it effectively or not. Even Zelda during one of the memory cutscenes wonders if Link truly is efficient with the blade of evil's bane.

Revali is just a complete Jerk, BUT ONLY in the english version. Even the japanese People said, that they made him overbarringly aggressive, instead of passive aggressiv. It's only the english translators fault, that those people hate him so much and doesn't give him a chance. For example: In EVERY other language, Revali laughs while flying on top of Medoh and ONLY in english he says: "Good luck sealing the darkness." Like wtf?! One more example, because i'm to lazy to search up and write down all those english words he said:
In english, he seems to be unsure, if Link can do it. He somewhat HOPES. He says: "I hope that luck holds out, Link..." while standing on top of Medoh. And in the original Version, he has FULL trust in Link. He says: "Link. "You are the key... You always was!" Fuck it! I'm translating the whole shit. While talking to Medoh in english: "Now we wait for that perfect moment... Medoh, we've been artfully patient for the last 100 years. I doubt you'll suffer a feather over a few more moments... After all these years, i simply must admit the truth... Even without the power of flight, Link made his way to this Divine Beast... And accomplished something that even i could not... Guess i was wrong about... how lucky he would be. I hope that luck holds out Link." Now for the original, while talking to Medoh: "I hope that you can hold on a little longer. (Dude. He cares about Medoh! Think about it!) Well, we waited a 100 years together... we can make it through the rest of it too. (See? He isn't a jerk here. He's even a teamplayer.) I must admit, he isn't so bad... He made it to the Divine Beast, even the fact that he can't fly. He has accomplished, what I failed to do. He is the strongest of the both of us. (He says: That Link is the strongest. THINK about THAT guys!) Link... You are the key... You always was!" I can go on and on, but as i said, i'm to lazy. Just one thing: They even messed up Teba. In english he says: "Bad news Link. It looks like i got hit pretty good back there... I think... I think i need to get back to the flight range. I just hope that... i can make it back... You head down to Medoh. Good luck. It's all you. *thumbs up*" They made him completly weak. What he truely says is: "It looks like i got hit pretty good back there. I'm sorry, but for now, i need to get back to the flight range. Don't worry about me... It's not that bad. And now, show Medoh who is Boss. Link. You got this! *thumbs up* I love Revali for who he is. He is not a jerk. He has a heart of gold. If you have the original language, you'll understand him WAY better. And you can read between the lines much better. He is a missunderstood lone wolf and he is very carring about his village and his people. I agree with everything you said in the video.

I thought it was just pure jealousy but I think there is more to it than family. Teba and his son are also very blunt and rude and have the support of family and friends. A sense of arrogance may just be part of the Rito character. In Wind Waker, the Rito happily worked as postmen but in BOTW and AoC, no job system seems to exist for the Rito. What if up until the beginning of the Calamity, the Rito were isolated from the rest of Hyrule until the Devine Beast Vah Medoh was found? A partnership of convenience in which open minded Rito such as the Elder were happy to obligize. Some Rito still being very stuck to their isolationist and nationalist ways, like Revali, see themselves as superior to others due to not needing to work with outsiders until then? Revali easily has the most depth of all the Champions and I wish in some form he got a big side story that covered it all in Age of Calamity.

They both grew up without no one that could really support them, being that lonely made them look for a place to belong to which they did by becoming the best at what they do, and that's all they've ever known, so when they meet someone that has everything they've ever wanted (link, shinji) they become frustrated and despise them because in Revali/Asuka's eyes they haven't done anything to deserve it.

On top of the whole growing up alone aspect, Revali had to work HARD to attain the champion ability catered to him; Revali's Gale. Everyone else was born with theirs, while Revali had no such luxury. In his diary he explains how hard he had to push himself when no one else did, and we even see this in game when Zelda went to recruit him. So it's natural that he would hold some resentment towards people who did not have to work hard for their abilities. Despite all his efforts and sacrifices, he instead had to watch someone else get promoted above him just because he's "chosen". Revali is one of the most human characters in BOTW in my opinion.

Urbosa and Daruk and presented as full gown adults who have watched zelda and link respectively grow up and based on Sidon Miefa may be over a 100 years old and still look fairly young. It would make sense that they have mastered there abilities where Ravali hasn't.
To add only Duruk descendant has his chapion ability and given his skittish personality I could see him having trained that himself dispite his young age.

The thing is: People who have been in Revali’s shoes know exactly why he acts the way he does.
I use to be in softball and I would practice all the time to the point where I would pass out on the field. People keep saying that Revali wants external validation but I’m pretty sure that’s wrong. In fact, he got many external validations. He got so many and that’s why he was known as the greatest and was looked up to.
No, I’m pretty sure Revali is suffering from inner validation. He’s seeing what makes him NOT perfect and it kills him. Every move someone might think is insane, he might see as ‘that could always be better’. Or ‘That wasn’t quite right.’ I think it stems from him not seeing what everyone else sees. He sees mistakes, people see incredibly moves. He sees how flawed a shot is, but others see it as a flawless shot.
Revali seems to suffer from a lot of insecurity and that’s normal for anyone who is putting their all into something. You see it with pro athletes all the time. They get upset over a mistake because they know they can do better but for some reason they couldn’t pull it off.
It’s something we use to call ‘Pro Mentality’ and it was treated as a normal thing. So, all in all, I think Revali is just REALLY hard on himself because he feels he has to pull more weight than the others and gets on his own head a lot of the time. I’m sure some nights, Revali might not train as long as spend the rest of his time sitting and pondering and going over very thing he could improve and pushing himself deeper into the hole he’s made inside his head.

I never look too deep in it, but I see what you are seeing and I wholeheartedly agree. I am a Revali lover. He is my favorite character in the Legend of Zelda series period, but I never really thought of it that way. My first thought was the Revali was in love with Zelda, and wanted to protect her, but since Link was in that position, it didn't fly. I scrapped this thought after I figured out Kass's teacher was the one to love her and not Revali. After a little longer, I did notice that Revali was lonely, and that Teba is the only successor that isn't related to the predecessor; However, I never looked deep into. Because of Revali's lack of an upbringing, all he wanted to do was prove his worth to not only the other Rito, but all of Hyrule. In Revali's Diary, it states in the first entry, "Everywhere I go I receive praise and affirmations that I am the pride of the Rito. I...could get used to this." Meaning that he hasn't recieved this same attention before. Due to Link recieving so much praise, Revali feels alone and without anyone to rely on. The thought of him always being alone says a lot. And just the thought reminds me of anyone who feels the same.
P.S. "She's aware she can't fulfill her sacred duties, and anyone can see how it weighs on her. It's difficult for me to comprehend the troubles of the talentless, but... I'm trying. It's not that I dislike the princess. She tries her hardest. It's simply not good enough." In some regard, Revali does care about the other Champions and the Princess. Deep down, he sees himself as the Princess. The same frustration he saw in himself all those years ago, showcased itself in the Princess, and this broke his heart.
Thank you for making this video! I love all your theories!!

I think that Revali not only felt like his physical prowess was the only thing that gave him value, but that he felt isolated not only among other races- due to being so different from them- but also among the Rito due to him being explicitly an anomaly by seeking to further his flight skills and combat abilities, despite the Rito apparently having very... passive, otherwise.
Most likely, he felt that being the best was the only way that he would be able to find a sense of belonging. Which lead to him not only setting impossible standards towards himself... but unable to see anyone better- or even potentially better than him- as a threat.
Even when, in reality, he and Link had far more in common than he would ever acknowledge.
Both Link and Revali (in contrary to the rather odd and increasingly prevalent assumption that Link never had to work for anything) spent far more time than their peers training. Both of them are implied to have started very young, and to have trained at both levels and intensities that were above their age. Both pushed themselves even if urged to ease up on themselves.
Both were, in fact, *isolated* for the bulk of their training. Revali for the obvious reasons, but Link... for all that we know he was planned to have a sister and uncle/grandfather *we don't know if he actually did.* We see no mentions of Link's mother, meaning that she quite possibly died in childbirth in the final iteration of his lore. His father died while Link was young.
And this, I think, is the part that really bothered Revali.
Link had expectations placed on him since birth. Unfair, stifling expectations that not only worsened as Link got older and he met them- but expectations that also robbed him of much ownership of those achievements. Considering that both in world characters and real life people assume that Link had everything handed to him because of his birth... well, that quite frankly would have resulted in people stating things such as, "Of course he could do that, he's the son of a Hylian knight." Or "Of course he could do that, he's the reincarnation of the hero."
I think that not only could Revali not stand that Link didn't bask in the attention given to him, but the fact that the attention given to Link meant that even if Revali did get the attention he wanted, or had been raised by his parents ( whoever they were)... it still wouldn't guarantee that the hole in his chest would be gone.
Imagine if you fought everyday with the goal of "when I'm the best, people will love me and I won't be alone anymore," only to be confronted with someone who has all of that... but still had to work themself to the bone and wasn't any happier, or less lonely for it?
It'd fundamentally challenge not just your goal in life, but shake your very worldview and force you to look back over EVERYTHING that you had put yourself through up until that point. Only to force you to have the thought of, _"None of it may have been worth it. I could still be alone, only placed, separated, on a pedestal with no option to get off of it."_
It wouldn't be a very pleasant surprise.
But really, a lot of the problem could have been resolved by putting the two of them in a locked room together.
Maybe a Sheikah Shrine or smth.

One VERY important thing that few people seem to know about, Revali is only really a huge jerk in the _English_ version... In the original Japanese translation he's only trying to get a reaction out of Link, but every time Link just stares at him, deadpan. There's none of that "I'm superior" stuff going on.

Inlike the orphan thing, I think I'll add it to the story I tell the kiddos about Revali's attitude.
Young rito, as everyone should know, need a dragon scale from the fire dragon (Dinral in this generation) in order gain the ability to fly. Dinral flies through Tanagar Canyon, and each young rito must travel to the canyon shoot an arrow at Dinral, then use the paraglider to retrieve the scale, then with new wings fly home. Of course this custom attracts an audience of interested rito. My thought is that Revali took aim, got clipped by a fireball, missed his shot completely, fell, tumbled down the entire length of Dinral's back, and then plummeted to the bottom of the canyon barely saving himself in time with his paraglider. His fellow Rito laughed at Revali's clumsiness after his painstaking and dangerous climb back to the top, and he felt embarrassed, and become obsessed with becoming the best archer, and has been over compensating ever since.

This is a very interesting take on why Revali is the way he is, and something I've noticed myself. He has no family, no lover, no...anything, to our knowledge, and that's very sad. It probably did affect him emotionally, making him feel lonely and start to form a mask of "everyone loves me" in order to hide that lonely feeling deep inside. However I believe there's a separate reason he acts the way he does towards Link. That's far too long of a topic to write out here on the comments but I have a reddit post titled "A complete overview of Revali, the Rito Champion" on the Breath_of_the_wild subreddit that goes into it very extensively if you would like to give it a read. I just recently noticed you used another reddit post of mine to make the video about Revali fighting windblight in the dark, and you're free to use anything you find interesting in this one too lol

M’kay, Imma keep the “he grew up this way” thing, but like- maybe he had an unknown family that was actually there, but they raised him to like- just be the best and one day he lost them due to something and he then had no one to keep him going, so the way he took it was that like- “someone did this and they thought themselves better than me, so I HAVE to be better and prove it.”
It’s silly but I guess it works… (Man, that’d actually be a really good character backstory for my book… XD)

While Revali isn't my favourite champion, and I didn't like his attitude in general, I never really hated Revali. In fiction, his arrogance and ego aren't as bad as other characters I've seen (like Bakugou and Black Star who are both talented and skilled individuals at their own rights to backup their attitudes). In BotW, I've always sensed this hint of insecurity from him but never pinpointed where it came from and this video kinda answered my question. Realizing that he was lonely and probably needed someone to acknowledge him outside of his skills makes me appreciate the bird boy more now.
And while it's not canon to BotW's timeline (imo), seeing the interaction Revali had with Tulin in AoC's second DLC is even more wholesome now, especially hearing him laugh with his successor and successor's child, and said child sleeping on his lap. That probably gave him some sort of comfort and sense of familiarity that he himself didn't realize he craved.

I think he has an attitude problem because like most abandoned kids he'd ask himself why he was abandoned. Was he not good enough for his family? So in order to avoid that happening again, he was determined to be the very best. Seeing others being just as good as him or even beter, is a thread. They might abandon him for another person if they are better. This is why his hatred is mostly towards Link since he is also a skilled archer that could beat him. And Link joined the already established champion group later on, maybe making Revalli fear being replaced even more. Also I think he acts cold and distant towards others to protect himself. You can't be abandoned by people if you were never close to begin with

While they both have descendants showing their CURRENT life likely had some sort of family, but their UPBRINGING is, as far is we know, the same as Revalis.

  • @aimeevanlandingham3844

I honestly think Revali is really insecure. He's scared to let people in to see the 'real' him because he's had to be what he thought everyone else wanted him to be. When Zelda comes up to him at the Flight Range, he's almost desperate to get Revali's Gale to work; like his whole identity is bound up in how he preforms. I don't think he would even know how to properly interact with people if he didn't have his 'ego'. I believe he was saying "Have to be the best" or something like that when Zelda walked up.
To be honest, it may be less him not having parents but having narcissistic or emotionally absent/abusive parents; or parents who said he was nothing if he wasn't the best. Children of abusive parents have a very hard time integrating and usually have no friends (I know, I was one). They act how they perceive how others want them to act in a form of self-preservation. If his parents were the type of 'you're not worth my time if you're not perfect *cough* Roahm*cough* then he may simply not know how to be anything different and is terrified of even trying; so, he secludes himself. I can imagine him wanting to get close to someone but letting it go just out of self-destructive behaviors.
He see Link as who he wants to be (obviously) but he's not seeing it right. He doesn't want to be the ultimate champion, he just wants to be liked by everyone.

  • @mrwookie2u896
    @mrwookie2u896 Před 2 lety

Nice thoery. I have always been in a state of neither loving nor hating Revali. I always thought his main reason for acting like this was to be an antagonist for Link. Someone else said it in a video, but I had been of the same mindset after getting all the main story memories. You can see that he is acting in a half passive aggressive way while also saying that "I am better than you" and for a hero who is constantly training to be the best in order to save Hyrule from Gannon, seeing someone else better than him would be a BIG reason to train harder and harder until you can pass them in total power level (what would that be called outside an RPG...) If you think about it, Groose from Skyward Sword was the main reason (before falling from the sky) that Link trained his loftwing and riding power. Link(SS) knew that if he was not the best than Groose would win and go on a (so thought of before it happened) date with Zelda(SS)
If Link(BoTW) thought that if he was not the best than even if he stayed the hero, he might lose his job as body guard for the princess, then he would train as hard as he can, and defeat as many monsters as possible, in order to try to stay on top. I do find it interesting that although I knew that Revali had no one living at the time of BoTW that he might have never had family. I had always thought that something like the following happened.
Revali was an only child, his parents were expert bowmen(bowomen as a word does not exist) soldiers for the Rito village so they would be fighting in the case of a battle. They trained Revali endlessly so that he became the best archer in all of rito village. He became a champion and his parents were proud, they kept telling him that he was the best warrior ever (like parents do) so his ego constantly grew. During the coming of the Calamity his parents were deployd to fight against evil and died in battle. Revali was single so he had no offspring, thus the requirement for being a descendant of Revali the Champion was to possess skill worthy of being so. Because Revali's Champion power was developed by his own ability, even if he had offspring it would be something taught not born with, thus the requirement was not the skill, but the mastery of the art of the bow. Thus Teba was chosen as his descendant, as he was truly a master of bowmenship.
All the other champions powers were basically gifts from the goddesses. Divine healing that has so few limits, perfect protection against anything (Link has limits, cuz as a game there have to be some) The ability to summon lightning to smite foes. Then there is Revali, he gained his 'power' through pure effort, blood sweat and tears until he finally had something worthy of calling him the absolute best. This boosted his ego over the other champions, as all their powers were gifts from the heavens while his was a self made/created power that only he could do. Sure it can be said that other champions had been the only of their time to use that power, but we dont know if Urbosa's mother had the same ability, we never met her. Just like Mipha's mom we dont know if it is a power of the Royalty. Daruk has a power that we know for sure is hereditary as his grandson shares it. Zelda's power is from Hylia, and every queen of Hyrule awakens it as a princess. Link's power is also pretty much a divine blessing of the hero considering the power it grants to him. All this, yet Revali created his power on his own. After thinking about these things it makes sense that he would have a big ego over them, and even more so on Link. The power he has was only granted to him because he was destined to save Hyrule from Gannon, without this fate he would never have this power. Think about Link's power (Fan/Cannon name is "Bullet Time", but I still think it should be called "Time Shift" as there is a good amount of "hero that relies on the power of time" in it. Not the hero of time, but the hero of the TimeShift) is a needed ability for his quest. Try doing a 100% (well, exept Korok Seeds) playthrough of the game while never using bullet time (outside of the shrine that is teaching it) and tell me how much harder it is than when you can use it. Yet, and I cant say it enuf, Revali is the only one who created his power on his own. Everyone else has a granted power, one that they rely on so much, yet Revali created his power in order to become better than he could ever be without it. All the others had their power since youth (Zelda excluded for clear reasons) but Revali mastered the bow before creating his power. Others grew up using their power and becoming well known for it, but if you think about Revali, you dont think the Bird who controls wind, you instead think of a master bowmen who gained everything he had through sheer dedication and will.

someone discusses this topic on Revali! Seriously, he is the most misunderstood character I've ever seen, even without researching, it should be very obvious why he is the way he is besides all the things you pointed out, he has no role model to look up to, he had to be his own. He's not even a part of a royal family or any high class, he's a complete loner who truly had to grow from the ground up, and despite his efforts he still can't get the respect or love that link has, a situation Ive lived though. I sincerely hope that this video will spread wide and far so everyone can at least finally respect him more, he doesn't deserve this level of hatred, heck, in age of calamities last dlc, we finally get to see a side to him we never get to see, happyness. On top of all that he's Young! He's like what in his early twenties? So he still has some growing to do.

If you look at all of the other champions it seems that they either inherently have their special attributes or don't have any issue using them. Mipha is shown to easily be able to heal others, and because of a Zora's long life she has had plenty of time to practice. Daruk's protection seems to be inherited, and Urbosa's lightning power comes from her ancestors. On top of this, Link was literally chosen by Hylia herself to be the hero. In the cutscene where Zelda comes to ask Revali if he agrees to become a champion Revali is struggling to even pull off a single Revali's gale. His powers only come from how hard he works to perfect them. He never had anything handed to him, so why should the other champions?

I think something else important to note is that the other champions except Link already had important positions, even before being chosen by Zelda. They were either the leader of their race or next in line, even if they failed as champions they were still going to be beloved and respected. Revali was technically the champion of his race and respected as a warrior, but that honor purely relied on Revali's skill. Without it, he was nothing. And like mentioned in the video, Revali didn't seem to have a family to carry on his legacy. Compared to the others, it's easy to see why he felt insecure.
So why does he dislike Link then? Just like Revali, Link didn't have an impressive background, he was just Zelda's guard. That's how it should have been at least, if Link wasn't chosen by the Master Sword as the one to seal the darkness. It's no wonder Revali was jealous, why was Link chosen to be special? What did he have that Revali didn't?

My thoughts are a mixture of your idea and a comment I read under a Revali theme video. The comment said that each of the Champions, minus Link and Revali, are some type of royalty or important person. Yet Revali is just a mere Rito. Link is the closest to Revali, as Link is just a knight, but Link is the chosen one to wield the Master Sword. So, Revali would have an extreme need to prove himself, as everyone else is royalty or important in some other way, but then there's Link, a random knight who happens to be the chosen one.

Sure, he’s an absolute jerk, I can’t deny, but I mean, just look at the adorable scenes in the Age of Calamity DLC where, (spoiler alert), he’s affectionate towards Teba’s son, Tulin.
