Best Loco Moco in Southern California is at Gardena Bowl Coffee Shop in Gardena Bowling Alley.
I usually get the Portuguese Sausage Loco Moco. Comes with 2 scoops rice, grilled onions, 2 portuguese sausage patties, gravy and 2 eggs and side of pickled cabbage. Eggs cooked to your liking. They also have beef patties, Kalua pork and chicken katsu Loco Moco. Other dishes are char siu and eggs, hawaiian royale, ox tail soup, saimin and numerous combinations like teriyaki chicken and tempura.

Not sure what the hype is about Liliha bakery jelly. It's just sweet tasting. Not much taste. The grilled butter rolls on the other hand, are awesome.
@@808G8GT I guess it's something we grew up eating only at Liliha Bakery -- You can tell it's the sweet kind of jelly that kids like. I remember waiting and eating at that counter with my family when I had to be lifted onto the seat. I always had the mahimahi and my parents usually had the hamburger steak. (Loco moco wasn't invented yet.) I always looked forward to the rolls and jelly before the main dish.

Best Loco Loco is at Zippy’s Koko Marina. Great gravy with mushrooms, and a char broiled burger. Rice and egg were also good.

It’s hard to beat Liliha Bakery for LM bc their patties are grilled on a flame grill and their gravy is ono (delicious).

I just want to thank you guys! I tried so many places on my trip because of you (one being the Loco Moco at Rainbows 😋) Roys for my birthday dinner was one of the best meals I've ever had and Highway Inn was probably my whole group's favorite meal. Also of course had to have Leonard's Malasadas, and much more. Thanks again! :)

Amanda & Felix...Yaaaaay! What a great episode. LOCO MOCO is the ultimate local comfort food. All of these locations you presented make fantastic loco moco's. Liliha Bakery has the best Loco Moco Patty. How can you beat a Charred Hamburger patty. Rainbow Drive In spoiled me with the Mac salad addition. I have to agree with Amanda's Loco Moco assessment. If I am not in town, my favorite place to get a Loco Moco on the Leeward side is "Kapiolani Coffee Shop" at the Waimalu Shopping Center. Lots of great comfort food there. The Loco Moco comes with mac salad, just the right amount of gravy and affordable. I order my loco Moco there with regular fried Rice vs standard white rice. The Fried rice gives the plate an extra yummy deliciousness. :-0)

Great video, looks like the start of a new series. Minor clarification for non-locals though. Ordering “gravy all over” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting much more gravy. Just means the gravy will also be covering the eggs and Mac salad (which isn’t a bad thing). If you’re worried about amount of gravy, just order extra gravy.

My favorite (although it's not the traditional) is the Curry-Moco from GomaTei. In fact, I like it so much, that's all I ever order when I go there! LOL!!

My very first Loco Moco was at Pancakes & Waffles in Kalihi, after seeing your video "LOW KEY LOCAL BRUNCH SPOT!" in March of 2021. I know Felix had the pork one when you were there, but I wanted to try the OG one first so I knew what it tasted like and it was delicious! I now judge all my Loco Mocos to that standard. Maybe when I come next month I'll have to try the one at Liliha Bakery, as it looks so good too. Oh and my daughter had the Bacon Waffle with whole bacon strips baked into it and it was also very yummy. Thanks for the REC!!

Haven't eaten any red meat for almost 15 years, but this video made me want to run down to Liliha. Really enjoyed seeing you folks enjoying the loco moco's even though I can't have any.
Being from Hilo I would recommend Kojii's, Cafe 100, Ken's, in that order. At Kojii's loco deluxe. 2 patties, 2 eggs on a bed of rice with gravy, Portuguese sausage, Kim chi, and Mac salad. Or custom order as a friend did, 6 patties & 6 eggs on a bed of rice and gravy. Better hurry Cafe 100 looking to sell the place.

My top 3: Leeward Drive-Inn, Chibo Okonomiyaki, and The Counter.

Another one that I like is Highway Inn’s smoked meat loco moco but it doesn’t qualify. Just had to mention it because it’s so good 👍🏽

We just got back from Oahu, and went to scratch twice. Then this video pops up and we were like, we were just there! We don't often go back to the same place in one trip, but Scratch's brunch was amazing. We actually did repeats much more this trip. We had some of the favorites, but no Loco Moco. The Brulee'd French Toast, pancakes, Chicken and Waffles and Burger were all good. We have to try Hamada's next trip.

It's nearly midnight, and its a bad time to watch both of you enjoying Loco Moco's. I'm hungry now. I'm surprised that you didn't mention Liliha Bakery's Pork Belly Loco Moco, which is pretty darn good, with Fried Rice and their grilled dinner rolls.. hmmm, very satisfying. All of them, looked good. On the Rainbow Drive In, Loco Moco, it's a brown gravy, but I tend to remember their Mixed Plate with their gravy for the roast pork, which, I thought the gravy was on that was pretty tasty. I'm not sure if that was a Red Eye gravy, which I would think would be pretty good on a Loco Moco. Nice reviews.
We were keeping it to standard, original Loco mocos, no alternatives. Maybe in a different segment we could feature innovative versions 👍

Loved this episode! I haven't had the Loco Moco at any of these places. Lol. Guess I better get going. Wonder if the Liliha in Pearl City grills their burger like the original Liliha? Hey, there are quite a few food places in the Pearl Highlands above Sam's in Pearl City. Maybe you can check it out although you have been to Liliha's and Little Joe's already.

Fyi.....Misty went to both Rainbows Drive Inn on Kapahulu and Richies Drive Inn on King Street across American Tshirt and the auto shop. The nice thing about both of these eateries is that you can TAKE OUT or EAT IN....

I vote rainbow drive in as the worst loco moco in Hawaii, it saddens me to see how many tourists go there believing that's what local food tastes like. The gravy is not brown as it should be and the patty is pre frozen almost tasteless. My two favorites would be "the original" cafe 100 in Hilo and Shige's saimin in Wahiawa

@@AmandaFelixEatsif you do go to Hilo try out Hawaiian Style Cafe - they have lots of great local food. They have 6 types of loco moco. We tried the Mok-a-Saurus…with hamburger patty, kalua pig, spam, and chicken cutlet on fried rice!
They also have an amazing HUGE fluffy haupia pancake! 🤤🤤
Yeah Rainbows went to frozen burgers awhile back, I miss the old patties. Should try Richies in Kalihi, heard their cooks went over there

Packaged brown gravy does the trick
It's legit just McCormick's brown gravy. Put the right amounts of powder mix and water the recipe calls for in a jar with a lid and shake it vigorously to mix thoroughly and prevent clumping before heating it in a pan

Y'All Need to go to Waipahu Cafe!!!! That is a Hidden Gem in Local Food!!!!! They are Well Known for their Fried Rice Omelets!!!!! They are Open from 6 am til 2 pm! They are closed on Tuesdays.

I once worked in a small sit-down diner many years ago. The owner was getting tired of working all day after 35 years of opening & closing 7 days a week all by herself so she hired me to be her line cook after I just got out of the military. It was just me, assisting her, the two of us. Straight American diner food breakfast & lunch only. Workday was 13-14 hours a day, 7 days a week. She paid me in a *large* roll of $10 bills at the end of the day, daily (it was a lot of pay in those days - 200 bucks). But her regulars packed the place every hour of the day. It was constant bustling madness chaos. She actually made homemade oven bread right in there. The toast & french toast itself alone was unreal.
One day i suggested we make loco moco. My boss, she say, "What is THAT?" I said: boss, let's try it" She says, "Sure! Go for it!"
The sales went up 300.00 a day! They were even ordering it to take it out after they ate already!
So she gave me hundred more bucks in pay a day. 😳😲...😁
