- Man builds island out of plastic bottles. Richart Sowa lives on top of what most people just toss away. He collected more than 125,000 plastic bottles that he found in the trash and put them into recycled fruit sacks beneath wood palettes to make his own island right in the Lagoon in Mexico. He now lives on the island or as he describes it "The Coolest Thing I've Ever Made".

He can create bio gas for cooking. Biotech-India has the technology. It is simple and very efficient. He must try to incorporate this in his island too.
Oh dear. All that plastic is visibly breaking down into microplastics & polluting the sea :(
He is a genius men I want to create my own country so badly
I wonder if he has a little weed plant somewhere.
he does i can remote view it.....looks like kush plant very dark green thow my have afani in it

the part where the mangroove roots weaves between the bottle is the most genius thing ever. They get so much stronger that way...
I am not so sure about that, I mean I reckon once roots start growing through the bags with bottles then the bottles sooner or later are bound to get punctured, thus taking in water which results in loss of buoyancy for the whole island. So while the roots help to strengthen the overall structure, they will also ensure the structure will eventually sink altogether :D but maybe the guy invented some sort of way to avoid this, go knows)
Jaroslav Cech it would have to damage a significant amount of bottles I doubt that’ll be an issue
Jaroslav Cech 😂🤣 roots will grow around the bottles you idiot 🤦♂️
Cye Knox Think about it, the bottles are holding up a super heavy island, they have to have a lot of pressure on them. Its because of that pressure that the roots will probably have to pierce through them.
@@averystrangeghostlysquid7637 I have dug up trash all over the woods and collected bottles out of a large lake near my house. I have never seen roots penetrate intact plastic bottles.

He grows it in human waste
Holy cow, I used to hang out with him back in the 90's when I lived in Puerto while he was making his first island. I even shaved a spiral in my hair and took pics with him standing next to the island. Ahhh I wish I could find those pics. Good times

There's not a little of people in the world you can make that comment about.
this is literally taking "One man's trash is another man's treasure" to the next level.
He is extremely intelligent and creative. He created his dream island/home self sufficient. That's fascinating. And he registered this island from the government to make a legal. Smart.

So raising the water level isn't a problem for you?
It might be small but it has the same effect as a cube of ice in a glass of water.
@@fullofragrets8657water level?! I'll assume you are joking
@@oasiscrushinglife6878 drop a cube of ice in a glass of water. The ocean is just a giant glass.

@@fullofragrets8657 what about boats?
@@fullofragrets8657 lmao you dont realise how big the oceans are. You could put a million of these island in the water you we couldnt even measure the difference of the sea level
Most of these plastic bottles end up in our oceans anyways, so Kudos to Richart for being smart!
I had opportunity to get involved with this guy project here in Brazil and that was literally something else... he has a good energy and compromise with his project in a way that i've never imagined. I was collecting some plastic bottles and learning a lot about the process to get the island made itself: he said the same results that we commonly have in the nature when you're planting a seed of a tree for example, in this plastic island you gonna have the same results in a shorter time... I was pretty excited to help him out cos we were basically using a noxious substance that kills and pollute to gives life once again, to keep providing... Sustainability is the key.
The coolest thing I ever made was my kids. 2 handsome young men that I love more than I ever knew was possible before having them. 😊❤
Madness has several degrees. Some of us become a danger, others we take advantage of the madness without offending or hurting anyone.
It takes like 450 years for PET bottles to decompose, let that SINK IN!
Totally in love with his little hide away ;from all the noise of too much people.. He must be so comfortable ... No noisy neighbour to bother him..
This is awesome loved to see how proud he is for his creation

Knowing that your eco friendly and helping the environment I won't care how I live
@Braxton McGuire So you would love to live on a huge wobbely pile of trash that’s floating in a river and probably doesn’t feel all that nice as soon as it’s raining season?
He's definitely smoked some good weed
Think this guys crazy? He's starting a new country. I'm considering starting my own country aswell. What a concept. And pumps a buck from crazy island tours. Genius. True genius. No licenses or registrations for islands as their generally in a fixed position. From problem plastic bottles.
Yeah, good luck with that, man. As soon as your "country" got anything valuable on it - the nearest pirate gang will rob your ass. And if you're planning any kind of illegal or undesirable activity on your private island - the local police will shut you down.
That is the COOLEST thing ever !!!!!!
Wait until there's a CONTINENT.
And I've enough faith in humanity, that someday we will achieve it...

Just so you know. He abandoned that thing and eventually collapsed. After several months of it littering the lagoon, mexican authorities had to take it appart because it was a potential hazard. It took several months and about 30 volunteers to finally clean all of the trash this guy collected there. He is nowhere to be found and doesn't take responsability for all the mess he created.

Imagine all the micro plastics released from that thing. Rip. Kind of cool and innovative though.
It doesn't really release anything.. Other videos, explains how this is working. But basically, the sun is what breaks down plastic, and it doesn't reach the under the island. Also, algea form around, protecting it even further. The mangrove roots, entangle themselves in the bags, and therefore create another barrier, which also holds the bags in place..
He is collecting garbage that would otherwise float into the garbage patch in the pacific ocean. Or lay and rott in some landfill, creating the microplastic you are worried about. Which will spread by the wind, everywhere.
This island even creates a sanctuary for creatures living in the water.. Algea feeds crabs, shrimp and fish, which again feed bigger fish, but it also gives hiding places, where the same creatures can spawn.
It's a nice ecosystem.
His feces, are nutrients for the plants living there.
It needs 2 years to compost, for it to be okay for food purpose soil.
But leaves and such, also create its own soil, as it rotts. Micro organisms, will break down feces, and leaves, and make it into useful soil.
Most ecological harvest, are grown in animal feces. It's the plants food, it's how they get the nutrients to grow big.. Even tasty..
If you water your tomatoes with male urine mixed in the water, they will develop more flavour, and grow bigger. It's called gold water for a reason.
And it can also help keeping deer, rabbits and such, away from the crop..
@@Galemor1 wow thanks for this, i was thinking abt microplastics too. but this is 100 times more awesome with the point u just made
@@Galemor1 "male urine" got my attention. Please do you mind explaining? Is male urine any different to female urine when it comes to using it to provide nutrients for plants?
@@Galemor1 Yes, in a normal environment the sun is what breaks down plastic bottles. This is sea water and it will dissolve the plastic over time, probably a lot quicker than the sun would. Even steel / metal alloy boats get eaten away by salt water, it's extremely corrosive.
If this was floating on a freshwater lake it would be different but that thing in salt water will dissolve.
Hate to say this but a hurricane broke it apart and got thousands of bottles everywhere
LEGEND! I want to live there! Man included! 👍🏻
Floating plastic island is the future! People should stop build manufacture on top of soil and start build it on top of plastic island

As the ocean level rises we will have to abandon the big cities... maybe replace them with floating cities?
in the next 265 billion years maybe we will need floating islands or by then we've probably migrated to another planet but despite that it is extremely clever and is helping with pollution 👍

Everyone: Recycle the plastic
This man: nah bro I need them
if he sends them to queensland he would of been a millionaire
LoalyToast bruh I know
@Douglas Mawer have you heard of something called a phase ? hmm
it a saying
Many countries doesn't recycle, and rotting in a landfill, is polluting way more than what this solution does.
There are other videos, explaining how this works, but mainly, sunrays, is what breaks down the plastic, and that can't reach under this island.
Just a little concerned about what happens when the plastic bottles breakdown and become micro plasic particles ?
They won't breakdown, because they are in darkness. UV won't affect them.
I love recycling and I love this!
this is literally one off my life goal so awesome to actually see it even if I didn’t made it

This man is so clever
Well now we know who's contributing to so much microplastics in the ocean fish.
Check out plastic island. No really plastic island as big as three States together.. sick af

This island is sooo cool!
The plastic bottle idea is so intelligent that I'm surprised modern boats don't incorporate it more - plastic is relatively strong, easy to replace and when created in structure that resmbles or is akin to multiple chambers (bottles) decreases the chances of being sunk via damage. Also so much cheaper to build that you could do it as a laymen in your back garden, pop on an inflatable pool inside and you've even got a redundancy should the bottle be destroyed.
Smart and innovative
This man's crazy in the best way possible.
Unfortunately The island has been since destroyed and removed in 2019
