i've also heard that chickens can be very affectionate, and like all animals they have varied personalities. if folks can't imagine keeping puppies or kittens in massively cramped slaughterhouses, then the same should apply to chickens. i'm not against eating meat, but the way it is farmed is truly gruesome.

Maya I’m also in Texas and my mom bought my brother a “miniature pot belly” pig. We really need help rehousing him as he’s become pretty depressed out in the suburbs and we don’t have enough resources to give him what he needs. All this to say maybe you could have a place where you keep pot bellied pig pets who were abandoned. Kind of like the one Logan Paul had. It would be very educational and would help a lot of piggy lives.

I absolutely love these videos. I’m starting gonna be starting college in fall of 2023 to study Zoology so I can later pursue vet school, and these sorts of videos always get me excited all over again about animals ☺️

the interesting thing about enrichment is that one of the stress behaviors is that the hens peck each other and the rooster is too aggressive. when they peck it increases the chance of disease. High production farming could implement basic enrichment and prevent many of those issues.
I'd love to see a video like this on your parrots :) I've been a parrot owner for 4 years now, and would love to see the enrichment you make for them :)

I want friendly, happy chickens and I think training is the way to go for bonding with them and meeting their needs.

I love rescue animals! What Maya's doing is potentially has some great potential leading to study these special animal behaviors further. However, everytime I see a chicken my mind is like going to one word, hungry. Damn, should have never said it Xd
A few things… -lettuce is not good for chickens. It has very little nutritional value and can impact their crop. -your roosts in the run need to be turned so the widest part is whats flat for their feet to rest on. -You mentioned a scratch feed, which are actually two separate things…there’s feed and there’s scratch. Scratch is a treat that should only be given in the winter time, especially here in TX, and only in small amounts. Feed is a nutritionally balanced crumble or pellet (usually) that is the primary meal for your birds. Since you have a rooster, you should be feeding an all flock pellet/crumble - pellets are less wasteful unless you’re fermenting your feed. You need at least 18% protein for your rooster, anything less is nutritionally insufficient. Supplement extra protein for him only in addition to that with things like dubias and black soldier fly larvae, as well as black sunflower seeds. Don’t ever give layer feed to mixed flocks (flocks with roosters or non-laying birds) as a primary meal, as the extra calcium in it will decrease your roosters lifespan, greatly. -to give your hens the calcium they need without forcing your rooster to consume excess calcium that will end up killing him, you should leave a separate bowl out of oyster shell for your girls at all times. That way they can consume it as needed. -roosters need grit in order to properly digest their food too. While oyster shell doubles as grit for hens, roos really shouldn’t eat it. If ample grit is not available for them in their run, sprinkle small handfuls of crushed granite grit for them, that way he has a safe source of grit. -be careful giving your girls too many mealworms. They are high in fat and are considered a treat. Each bird should have no more than a a teaspoon a day of them. Enrichment is great, but overdoing it with the unhealthy treats can quickly lead to obesity. Fatty liver is a major issue for backyard chickens.
Wait, if the doors are automatic, wouldn't chickens sometimes get locked out by accident, or are they really that good that they go inside before the door closes every time?
