I actually went back and picked the "I have places to be" ending. Nothing in the game messed me up so much as watching Toriel start to leave, stop, turn around and say "Hey, Frisk. See you around." and then walk off. I had to load up again just to choose the "I want to stay with you" ending again.

Thats exactly what I was thinking! I felt like one of the biggest 'plot holes' in the game was "What? Did humans just become nice on the surface, too?!"
maybe that is why the song is called respite, no matter weather you reset or not their peace will always be short lived because the humans cannot live peacefully with anyone, not even each other, and this time there will be no barrier, just total genocide of every monster in existence, maybe Asgore should have destroyed humanity... (yes i know undertale is fiction and the fact i am a human but im just saying tbh the monsters would deserve earth more than the humans do, they are not perfect but they are much better than we are)

Unlike most players, I played the pacifist route and left it like that. Why? Because I wanted Toriel's dream to come true. Because I wanted to make Papyus proud. Because I wanted Undyne and Alphys to be happy together. Because didn't I want Asgore to let down the monsters. Because I wanted the monsters to be free. Because I don't want Sans to worry about everything repeating. Because I wanted Flowey to see that there's no need for a genocide. Because I wanted Chara be at peace.
I doubt Toby will leave it alone, considering he hasn't explained Gaster at all and the fact that he's working on another game. It may not be a sequel or prequel to Undertale, but we can dream.

When Toriel asked if I wanted to stay with her, I took “I have places to go”, because, it was for me a “goodbye” for this game. I never wanted to play again, to let the characters have their happy ending. I’ve never did genocide and I don’t want to do it. This game made me think of my actions. It's been a while since Frisk led the monsters up...things have changed. It's good to see Frisk not wanting to reset. Nonetheless, I'm still staying with her. Humans have learnt the ways of magic. I could finally reveal mine...I'm proud of my friends for becoming what they are. Guess they got stronger from being near me. Still...nothing is going to be perfect around her are they? It's just going to be one day after another...and while humans have learnt to accept monsters, I feel that it's not over. We haven't saved everyone yet...so we should keep trying.... Current time since completion of True Pacifist Run: 1 year almost. Not going to reset again. I made a promise to Asriel. I'm done. The tale is told. Frisk and the rest deserve the sunrise. Never reset. Never let the Red Eyed Child have their way. Never strike down my friends. You made one hell of a game Toby Fox. But i'm not going to play all of it. Asriel was redeemed and I left my friends smiling in the photograph that i refuse to taint.
There really isn't. Trust me, I know all about the Genocide Route. I know friends who have done it. But someone once said "Don't Kill and Don't be killed." You can say that the Genocide route is brilliant for creating a serial killer persona for Frisk/(insert your name here, calling the Fallen one Chara is guilt deflection). I see no reason to do so. Sometimes...you need to find the willpower to put a good story down. I can see no point in killing the characters i've grown to adore.
@Mining Trout I know of it too but I've had enough nightmares in my life (grimdark or otherwise, awake and dreaming) without adding more. Granted I may still be in habit of making some but I'd like to cease that. And now I wonder how true my words are if I continue but help.
The reason people do the Genocide is because they're curious. Because they want to see what it is. Because they want a challenge. Because they want to know if they can do it, or how hard it will be. This is what is reproached to them by the mere characters of the game. Killing to satisfy your curiousity. Hell, worse than killing, wandering around until every last one of the monsters has perished by your hands. I'm no stranger to this. I did it. I did the genocide route. I wanted this challenge, I wanted to get my shot at beating Undyne and Sans, I wanted to hear Battle against a true Hero and Megalovania in the game (and they feel way more beautiful when they come from the game). I almost died once per monster I've slain. 72 times. 30 against Undyne, 42 against Sans. Because I wanted to see what it was. But I didn't even want to read the dialogues. I didn't read them, I didn't want to see what I was doing. In the end though, I didn't finish the genocide. I just did what I wanted, beating Undyne and Sans. After I won against the skeleton, I closed the game without saving, then opened it again. I fought him again. Reached his mercy offer. Accepted it. Let him dunk me on. "If we're really friends... you won't come back." I didn't come back. I reset the save file there, and went back on to another Pacifist Route, without having Chara's grip weighting on my save file like the memory of what I had just done would forever stay in the depths of my heart and soul like an anchor in the bottom of the sea.

As the casket was lowered, I thought of all the times, and how much I missed her already. The sun started to set as I went home. In the sky, the sun beamed through the clouds as if heaven was picking her up. The sunrays perfectly shone upon my front door...
If this is true it's sad, rip to your grandma, but look on the bright side, you still have your life ahead of you, do what she would want you to do, she would be proud of you for what you probably are now, stay happy man or woman, and fly high to your grandma
I cannot listen to this track anymore without shedding a few tears. On my first pacifist run, I thought the song was nice, but I wasn't that touched by it. Then I did a genocide run... I took the world to its end and i thought i could destroy what I did by true resetting. Oh, how i was wrong. I had looked up what happened on pacifist post genocide on the internet and i was heartbroken. I did another pacifist and saw the worst ending you could get. I tried again and again to see if i could fix what i had done. But this game doesn't let you erase your mistakes. I got curious about genocide, and i payed the price. Now whenever I see this scene i can't help but cry. Papyrus is so eager to make a first impression, Undyne and Alphys are finally a happy couple, you live with Toriel, based on your decision, and Sans is content with where his life is. But then you get the ending scene, and Chara kills all of the monsters and the humans. I can never listen to this track the same way again.
I love this, and everytime i listen to it, it makes me gander into my own soul and heart, to make me question my own existence, i dont know where i would be without discovering this game, its creator and music. This has had such a positive impact in my life.

Think about it, it shows up everytime you witness one of the many facets of monsters: It shows up in the ruins, when Toriel shows you the soft side of monsters, it shows up in Undyne's theme, when she shows the willpower and determination of monsters, it plays in so many different places. And finally, it shows up here, when the hopes and dreams of monsterkind as a whole are reached. Therfore, I prefer to call this song: The Hopes of Monsterkind.

You can hear small bits of corruption in the music, which stands for something bad beginning to occur, which is you resetting and then doing genocide, which is also what the word respite is, “a short period of relief from a threat”
In the Undyne OST comments a lot of people refer to this piece (and ruins) as her theme, when really, I believe that it's the theme for the whole underground, and her theme just shows how dedicated she is to protecting the underground. It's just a theory/observation I discovered while listening to the Ruins theme.
I've always wondered if the sun was rising or setting at this point. That would also clarify if it was daytime or nighttime during the events of Undertale, when you were traversing the underground as Frisk. I can imagine it must have been daytime when Chara, Frisk and the other humans climbed the mountain and fell into the hole at the top.

maybe that is why the song is called respite, no matter weather you reset or not their peace will always be short lived because the humans cannot live peacefully with anyone, not even each other, and this time there will be no barrier, just total genocide of every monster in existence, maybe Asgore should have destroyed humanity... (yes i know undertale is fiction and the fact i am a human but im just saying tbh the monsters would deserve earth more than the humans do, they are not perfect but they are much better than we are)

It's been a while since Frisk led the monsters up...things have changed. It's good to see Frisk not wanting to reset. Nonetheless, I'm still staying with her.
Humans have learnt the ways of magic. I could finally reveal mine...I'm proud of my friends for becoming what they are. Guess they got stronger from being near me.
Still...nothing is going to be perfect around her are they? It's just going to be one day after another...and while humans have learnt to accept monsters, I feel that it's not over. We haven't saved everyone yet...so we should keep trying....
Oh and Papyrus has realised not to fight the sun, so that's good.

Current time since completion of True Pacifist Run: 1 year almost. Not going to reset again. I made a promise to Asriel. I'm done. The tale is told. Frisk and the rest deserve the sunrise. Never reset. Never let the Red Eyed Child have their way. Never strike down my friends.
You made one hell of a game Toby Fox. But i'm not going to play all of it. Asriel was redeemed and I left my friends smiling in the photograph that i refuse to taint.

There really isn't. Trust me, I know all about the Genocide Route. I know friends who have done it. But someone once said "Don't Kill and Don't be killed."
You can say that the Genocide route is brilliant for creating a serial killer persona for Frisk/(insert your name here, calling the Fallen one Chara is guilt deflection). I see no reason to do so. Sometimes...you need to find the willpower to put a good story down. I can see no point in killing the characters i've grown to adore.
@Mining Trout I know of it too but I've had enough nightmares in my life (grimdark or otherwise, awake and dreaming) without adding more. Granted I may still be in habit of making some but I'd like to cease that. And now I wonder how true my words are if I continue but help.
The reason people do the Genocide is because they're curious. Because they want to see what it is. Because they want a challenge. Because they want to know if they can do it, or how hard it will be. This is what is reproached to them by the mere characters of the game. Killing to satisfy your curiousity. Hell, worse than killing, wandering around until every last one of the monsters has perished by your hands.
I'm no stranger to this. I did it. I did the genocide route. I wanted this challenge, I wanted to get my shot at beating Undyne and Sans, I wanted to hear Battle against a true Hero and Megalovania in the game (and they feel way more beautiful when they come from the game). I almost died once per monster I've slain. 72 times. 30 against Undyne, 42 against Sans. Because I wanted to see what it was. But I didn't even want to read the dialogues. I didn't read them, I didn't want to see what I was doing.
In the end though, I didn't finish the genocide. I just did what I wanted, beating Undyne and Sans. After I won against the skeleton, I closed the game without saving, then opened it again. I fought him again. Reached his mercy offer. Accepted it. Let him dunk me on.
"If we're really friends... you won't come back."
I didn't come back. I reset the save file there, and went back on to another Pacifist Route, without having Chara's grip weighting on my save file like the memory of what I had just done would forever stay in the depths of my heart and soul like an anchor in the bottom of the sea.

As the casket was lowered, I thought of all the times, and how much I missed her already. The sun started to set as I went home. I cannot listen to this track anymore without shedding a few tears. On my first pacifist run, I thought the song was nice, but I wasn't that touched by it. Then I did a genocide run... I took the world to its end and i thought i could destroy what I did by true resetting. Oh, how i was wrong. I had looked up what happened on pacifist post genocide on the internet and i was heartbroken. I did another pacifist and saw the worst ending you could get. I tried again and again to see if i could fix what i had done. But this game doesn't let you erase your mistakes. I got curious about genocide, and i payed the price. Now whenever I see this scene i can't help but cry. Papyrus is so eager to make a first impression, Undyne and Alphys are finally a happy couple, you live with Toriel, based on your decision, and Sans is content with where his life is. But then you get the ending scene, and Chara kills all of the monsters and the humans. I can never listen to this track the same way again.

+Magic Tiki AJ Well, respite is based on Ruins(or "An Ending" to be exact), and Undyne's theme, just like the waterfall music, also has part's of Ruins in it. Ruins is mixed in many songs that contain piano lines.
+Fra32Entertainment As intelligent people before me have pointed out, this is the Leitmotif for monsters as a whole. Think about it, it shows up everytime you witness one of the many facets of monsters: It shows up in the ruins, when Toriel shows you the soft side of monsters, it shows up in Undyne's theme, when she shows the willpower and determination of monsters, it plays in so many different places. And finally, it shows up here, when the hopes and dreams of monsterkind as a whole are reached. Therfore, I prefer to call this song: The Hopes of Monsterkind.
Toby Fox, creator of the game and it's music, explained he repeated the same themes in different variation to make the player feel nostalgic and think of the first time they have heard it.
Thats pretty interresting. Well, Toby was a genius while making the soundtrack.

Even after 3 years, I feel like this is the best melody from Undertale. Wrapping up the story in such a satysfying way, and also giving you the feels, something very few games can offer. Happy birthday to UNDERTALE, Still the best game I 've ever played.

You can hear small bits of corruption in the music, which stands for something bad beginning to occur, which is you resetting and then doing genocide, which is also what the word respite is, “a short period of relief from a threat”
I almost cried at this. I don't have the heart to do a genocide run, and I swore to leave my save file alone forever after I got this ending.

In the Undyne OST comments a lot of people refer to this piece (and ruins) as her theme, when really, I believe that it's the theme for the whole underground, and her theme just shows how dedicated she is to protecting the underground. It's just a theory/observation I discovered while listening to the Ruins theme.
I've always wondered if the sun was rising or setting at this point. That would also clarify if it was daytime or nighttime during the events of Undertale, when you were traversing the underground as Frisk. I can imagine it must have been daytime when Chara, Frisk and the other humans climbed the mountain and fell into the hole at the top.
