My great grandfather was from Cedar key. My grandmother was born in Cedar key in 1927. I used to go there as a child in the late 60's to early 70's.

I was probably 15 years old in the latter 1960s, my Dad had a copy of The Empty Copper Sea. I took it and read it. When I first heard 'Incommunicado' it immediately brought me back to the book I read 20 years before. This is the first of these I have watched, keep up the good work.

Thanks for sharing. My parents lived in cedar key in late 70’s/ early 80’s and worked at the sea breeze restaurant. My dad was in a band at the time and said then Jimmy buffett was just becoming famous and would come to cedar key often and play music with them and spend time on the island. I was there the first 5 years of my life and just Recently went back with my daughter. Beautiful town.

Melissa, thank you so much for watching and sharing your history. Cedar Key is a really great little island and your parents must have had a great time during their years there. It's especially nice to hear that you recently went back with your daughter. You are right, it is a beautiful town! Please feel free to subscribe and share this video as I will have more JB related content coming in the months ahead.

I read all 20 and so did most of my family. We actually got the quiz book that we used as a game at a family reunion. I have eight brothers and sisters by the way. I believe the lonely silver rain started in cedar key.

Thanks much for the video! But a modest correction....MacDonald's books are still fairly popular today with we "older folks" who remember and can relate to the time period(s) of Travis McGee. Plus MacDonald quite often uses McGee as a voice for his own philosophies and observations of American culture. That is the real beauty of the McGee series....the social commentaries woven into the stories. Sadly though, as not many "youngsters" are reading books these days, MacDonald, McGee and Meyer will eventually be forgotten.

John thank you so much for watching! I truly appreciate your comments and please understand that I was not trying to diminish how good of a writer John Macdonald was or how popular the books were at that time. I knew it as soon as I said it that it came out wrong! Everyone that I know that has read the books truly enjoyed them.

Very nice work you are doing!
CK is one of my favorite places on earth. We used to vacation there often for short weekend getaways and de-stress. Even got engaged there! But, you left out a big part of CK--The historic Island Hotel. Jimmy stayed in the hotel many times (there's even a room named for him). He serenaded a large crowd during the annual Seafood Festival from the upper balcony. The Neptune Bar, still in the hotel, holds a lot of memories of JB both patronizing and performing there. Pictures show the evidence.

Thank you for watching and the comments. My wife and I spent a couple of hours in the Neptune and had some great conversations with the locals about many of the things you mention. In fact the autographed picture in this vlog of Jimmy "thanks for the crabs" that was taken in the Neptune. Time was tight and we couldnt get all the information in as it was just a short 2 night stay. But CK will be back strong soon and I will return and tell more of his history and stories.

I don’t remember which book, but Travis did spend time in Cedar Key. It was after one of his misadventures when he and the girl he helped set sail on the Busted Flush to recover from their near death experience. They spent their days soaking up the sun, eating good, drinking Boodles gin, and of course making love.

That's great. Topic I really needed to know more about! Funny I was in conversation with a young woman of a Manatee preserve tour and she said she never heard of it when I said to her Travis McGee is on Cedar Key .
We were talking about Buffett and also the key is nearby so I said I'd visit it and she said how it was very cool old fishing village to go see it.
The Manatees still need your help, with or without Jimmy .

The line from the opening lyrics of Incommunicado “Travis McGee is in Cedar Key that’s what John McDonald said”. That piqued my interest. Started at the beginning of the series and am nearing the end of the series. I an approaching the last book, and am beginning to feel the loss of a friend..Travis McGee.

Sailors read more than other members of our society.... When I fished and lived on a boat full time, I read constantly, and my preferred books were less than academic- really I just wanted some brain candy as read myself to sleep. Clive Cussler was my favorite.

Many people are not aware that Key West was *the largest city in Florida* back in the day.

Or of the fact that the whole city was a fabricated project of the United States Government fo a good long while. Look it up . The US Govt spent billions to induce tourism and other interests into Key West through the 20th century and for military use .

Long time ago there was an elderly couple that owned a restaurant in Cedar Key down by the water on the main drag. Buffett sailed in one day and stopped by that evening to grab a bite to eat. The place was busy with people waiting outside to get a table. The server, upon seeing Buffett also waiting rushed into the place and excitedly told the elderly woman owner "Jimmy Buffett is waiting outside for a table!!"... The old lady said "I don't care, you tell Mr MUFFETT he has to wait just like everyone else." LOL! Good ol days in Cedar Key.

It's funny to me that you keep saying "down here" in reference to Cedar Key. Most of us Floridians say "up there" because it's way up in the north part of FL. Where are you from?
