I am a beginner, have had my guitar about eight months and love the way this song sounds. I've been practicing the strumming pattern for about a week but what I strum still sounds nothing like it should. I guess I'll keep trying.

I had the same, what cured it was using a thin .40 pick.
Do not strum all the strings. When you are a more advanced played you will strum all the strings.
