  • Fasten your seatbelt: It's time for our early review of "Ferrari." We were both extremely impressed by the latest film from Michael Mann, which follows an especially tumultuous time in the life of automaker Enzo Ferrari during the summer of 1957. Written by Troy Kennedy Martin, based on the book by Brock Yates. Starring Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley and Patrick Dempsey. In theaters Christmas Day.

Thank you for your reactions. Insightful as always. You reference Adam Driver in "House of Gucci" which we all know was a mess; the trailer almost suggests a similar result--the melodrama, affairs, , corporate stresses, car crashes etc; is this gonna be more of the same? But you suggest the opposite. This recalls the misleading trailer for "The Holdovers" which suggested the trope of grumpy teacher vs rebellious student stereotype, concluding with a close up of Paul Giamatti's all-too-obviouus exasperated face; but the movie wound up being the opposite--well drawn, realistic characters; one of the best films of the year.
You also mention the Big Moment which sounds intriguing. The filmmakers are getting so good in putting us into the cockpit of the race cars with standard sequential action you highlight: driver's face--hands'n-feet-clutch-reactions--cut to whizzing cars, repeat. As a result of your reviews, looking forward to this one. Hope our humble SilverCity gets it in. Thanks!

@@BreakfastAllDay Ferrari IS interesting; quite the life; pressures from all sides, much self inflicted; Driver recalls Jose Ferrer in The Caine Mutiny; meticulous, intelligent fascination with cars & racing; far less so domestically; the BIG moment is wrenching. Great editing! Driver & Cruz are very good; we’ll forego the mix of accents, save Ms Woodley as you say. One almost wishes for a teeny bit more depth on Enzo’s mother & his drivers but there’s a lot of plates spinning; ending’s s bit abrupt; otherwise, pretty engrossing effort.

@robaquarian yeah, I'm going to wait to the four hours director's cut on January 6th, we've been through this time and time again, studios heads just don't know how to deal with Ridley Scott, when there's a simple solution, staring them in the face the whole time: simply charge premium ticket prices for a 4-hour experience in the theater.
take the baseline price from $12 to $18 so that theater owners are happy. the public can be educated that this is worth it once the glowing reviews come in and they understand that it's worth the extra cost. they really need to put their trust in Ridley's hands and let him be the one who decides what's the appropriate story to tell, because he always comes out lookiçng great when he has his own cut

Last of the Mohicans gets my vote for Mann's best movie, a true masterpiece. And he pulled off amazing action scenes with old fashioned weapons (gunstock war club!)& great fight choreography.
    Good soundtrack too.

I appreciate the mentions in the film of Varzi, the first winner of an F1 GP (albeit not a championship race) in the second post war, on which I'm writing a book about, and of Borzacchini and Campari, the two "protagonists" along the Polish Czaykowski of Monza's Black Sunday, during the 1933 Monza Grand Prix (about which I've curated the Wikipedia articles).
The film was nice enough but not special in my opinion. Some nice footage, especially Guinizzolo and the shots and reconstructions of some cars like the 801 and 315S

Ferrari is brilliant. Wonderfully cinematic with lots of brilliant scenes, especially the interiors. Mann has cited Caravaggio as an influence, and that shows. I missed it in Venice, but have seen it twice since then at different festivals. It's rare that an American film grips me, but this one did. Mann may be the last American master still alive, and he is one of the very few directors who carved out a distinctive style when shooting digitally.
Christy's analysis of the opera sequence is spot on.
The Insider is amazing, too, and Blackhat was severely misunderstood. Nice to agree with you guys for once. ;)

Fascinating that critics would now consider Michael Mann "old fashioned". He was always such a trailerblazer whether it was marrying hardboiled urban crime drama to that unmistakeable nighttime aesthetic, or pushing digital video technology further than any of his peers. The best of his output is timeless to me.

Saw an early screening a couple nights ago. It's not as visceral as Mann films like Last of the Mohicans or Heat, but it has its charms. The racing scenes are pretty thrilling, although I'm curious as to how much of them are done with special effects, as they feel a little too seamless.

My wife and I fully enjoyed the drama and excitement within the Ferrari racing family! I would have liked to see extended racing scenes and then a more satisfying end, but it had to end at some point. Penelope Cruz portrayed Mrs. Ferrari powerfully and with intensity! The Red Ferrari race cars are so beautiful... amazing to see in motion! Recommended, although this is an iconic family drama!

I'm a huge Michael Mann fan - I think he's one of the cinema greats - but that doesn't mean you can't also be critical of some of his movies. Blackhat is really not a good film when it could have been and compared to his 90's masterpieces (The Insider, Heat, Last of the Mohicans), his later movies have sometimes been a little bit off the boil - Collateral excepted. Either way, I'm really happy to hear he's back on form and looking forward to seeing this!

I really liked this movie. I agree that Shailene Woodley was miscast, but she didn't ruin the movie for me. She was just okay, while I thought all the other leads were excellent. The two accidents! WHew! The first one shocked me, though I saw it coming seonds before. The SECOND ONE though!! I actually cried out in the theater! Lucky for me, everyone else did too, and the movie's volume was pretty loud, so I was safe! Devastating and so shocking! MINOR SPOILER ALERT:
You're right about the editing, including maybe 10 seconds before, they show the reflector on the road as a car zoomed past it. I took note of that and thought, "this is going to be something" but I didn't know what. Holy hell! I knew nothing about this going into the movie, so I was as shocked as anyone could be!

Outside of that i loved this dilm

I can't remember really even seeing a trailer promoting this movie. Didn't really know what to expect going in. While I liked it, the flow of it was often slow, feeling longer than its running time for sure. Having just returned from 3 weeks in Italy, I wish I'd have seen this before. I spent just a few hours in Modena, not really seeing anything to poke around for. Stupid me!

I didn't care much for this film. I love Michael Mann, but he hasn't really delivered since... Collateral? And even that kinda bothered me. The 3rd act was ridiculous and unbelievable. Ferrari was SLOW and uninteresting. I thought Driver was the weakest link in the film. His accent was comical. I will say that the movie belonged to the women. Penelope and Shailene were the backbone and only good thing about it. Aside from a few car crashes, one in particular, this movie stalled at the starting line.

  • @stephenshea7909
    @stephenshea7909 Před 5 měsíci +1

It was a horrible movie. The car crashes looked so bad that they were funny. I still don’t get why this period in the companies history was the focal point it sounds like the more interesting stuff happened before and after the movie. The racing sequences, while probably historically accurate, were hard to follow due to the helmets and all the cars looking the same and being the same color. Adam Driver is fine, Penelope Cruz is fine it’s just not good. I can typically respect a good movie if I didn’t like it but this is straight up bad.
