- Its time to fix up this Toshiba Satellite Pro 4270 that I was given for free.
After the restoration I did some run time testing on the battery was able to get about 1.5 - 2hrs installing applications, amazing for any laptop of this age.

I had an exact same modell back in 2005. I made some upgrades back then, changed the CPU to a 750Mhz Pentium III, added 256Mb RAM and a 40GB HDD. I really liked that Toshiba. Good memories :)

I had a very similar model but mine was a dell latitude. It looked just like that though even down to the stylized case shape and all. That takes me back. Battery lasted like an hour and a half! Good times.

Even my 4 year old laptop’s battery doesn’t hold a charge, so this is really surprising
My laptop measured 0.1 Wh. Phew. It's slow anyway. I already invested 20€ into adapter and 8€ into keyboard
@@kyria_kous Date inside it was 09/18 2009. So it gives sense. And my neighbor wanted to throw it away first, but then gave it to me. It's still extra slow with AMD athlon 64
@@kyria_kous Probably my mistake. I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10. That was super slow but windows might be useful so I did dualboot with Linux Mint 20 MATE and that runs ok. But still, it can't even smoothly play 144p video. It's emachines E627
My 8 year old laptops battery lasts for 2 hours max. Around 1 hour in total though. But it takes about 12+ hours to change it.
@@kyria_kous I thought it's gonna be great for web browsing....but.... CZcams won't load at all, reddit takes around 1 minute to load (It's just processing, internet speed shows 0), Twitter just 30 seconds. Screen is awful! You only see 7cm stripe of correct colors when you look directly at it, the top and bottom already has off colors, so terrible viewing angles. But, it's a laptop. 64 bit one.

2:01 this is what happens if the backlight stays powered on, but the supply voltage to the panel itself is shut off or there's no or a corrupt LVDS video signal anymore, a combination that normally shouldn't happen. What you're seeing is the panel stopping to refresh/control the pixels, so they fade till they return to their natural state. Usually indicates a broken flex cable to the panel, but not always
A very scary error in the Southwind CDOS line was the kill screen meltdown, instead of pressing any key in this screen, we trigger it by Command+SysManage+F5 (for desktop computers, it is Command+FuncKey 3) and it affects the LVDS video signal. Causing the meltdown, but doesn't display vertical lines. After 40 seconds it will shut down.

Nice restoration! That wa a great laptop back in its day - and yes I do believe that Windows 95 (or 98) was the correct operating system to use. This was back when manufacturers added lots of ports to their laptops, as well as made them durable and upgradable.
I'm also fully aware on how Li-Ion batteries work; I have an old Packard Bell laptop from the Windows XP era, and that refuses to charge anymore due to it being left too low for too long. When I did finally get it charged (using an external charging method), it lasted less than 30 minutes, then went to a low level (again) and refused to charge. So it's important that you take care of your Li-Ion batteries to make sure they don't deplete too much and/or the cells become imbalanced over time.

I had one of these from an old job, only got rid of it this year having a clean out. Mine also had a proprietary external drive caddy you could add extra drives with. Great video and brought back some memories, thanks Hugh.

I had two 4300s many years ago. A little higher spec with a P3 700. A very capable machine for the mid 2000s, it ran 98 well. I remember SNES emulation ran perfectly. Also used for P2P clients (Limewire, Bearshare) and web browsing, with a PCMCIA WiFi card.
On one of the laptops, the hinges failed so the screen had no support, plus the power jack failed so the power brick was soldered in. I can remember it being propped up in the living room against a pile of books to keep the screen up!
Learnt a lot about computing in my teens on these old dinosaurs, leading me to my software development job today.
Aww, that's heartwarming to see it. So little time passed, and we've moved on so far.

@Michael O Callaghan that depends a bit on use case, I use my devices with older external displays, rs232 devices, and much with servers so I need vga, seriall port, ethernet, usb (both type a and c), double sata slots, dvd and much more that I can't find in any device
Laptops in the 90s were like 2,800.00. I remember going to Radio Shack and looking at these, and you had to ask the Clerk to take it out of the Case to handle it. The Clerk had to stand by while you viewed it! Things are made Cheaper nowadays!

Amazing how much of this machine still works, especially (almost) the hard drive. I hope Toshiba never lose their reliability.
Toshiba no manufacture laptops anymore. But they were a good quality laptops.

Man, Toshiba was on fire with the repairability / upgrade-ability of their devices.. My first laptop was a Toshiba satellite from around 2008/2009. Still miss that old brick. Sadly the screen died on me and I could not really replace that at the time. Loved the keyboard on it and it was actually just as easy to open and mess around with as this one. I still have the keyboard actually.

I seem to remember if the model number ends in a 5 it is a retail laptop, if it ends in a 0 it is a bulk order laptop say for a University etc.

I just looked at some of your older videos and honestly this man deserves 1 million subscribers like he litteraly posted videos when he was 9 and has been making videos for the last 12 years
Most old & battered laptops are destined to be scrapped, but given the love, time & patience, the know how, & a stock of new or refurbished parts, you can guarantee experience, & the thrill of resurrecting old & broken equipment, you cannot beat! I love your work & it tells me that you take pride in it, I have copious amounts of respect. I have an old early 90's "GRID" laptop that's falling to pieces with all the plastic casing failing all over it, cracks throughout! It looks to be in terrible condition , but amazingly (apart from having a screen so terrible) it boots into MS DOS , then I Type "win" & it boots into Microsoft Windows 3.1! That was a few years ago & I still have it! I'm planning a full restoration for it, I just have to get everything to hand.
Based on that text-mode scrollbar it looks like the laptop had Windows 2000 installed.
He should have installed XP Pro or 2000. I would have personally re-installed Windows 2000 again, it's a great OS for sure.

Wow! Reminded me of my early days of the career. Windows 3.11 and then Windows 95. Good job of restoration. That hard disk gamble worked nicely 👍
I have the same machine, but with the 650Mhz celeron and the dstn screen, it was my dad's very first laptop way back in the 90's and the battery also keeps a charge, which is insane!
Toshiba knew how to make great laptops back in the day, never bought any other brand of laptop back then, love watching your videos

I had a lot of Floppy Discs like 70+ and never thought they would be so important and used to play with them and break or lose them but now I have only couple of them and I know how precious the are
I had a Toshiba Tecra 8100 from around the same era, it developed an annoying problem where the backlight randomly just seemed to die, found out there was a lawsuit for the issue and Toshiba repaired it free of charge despite it being a second hand laptop and purchased years later than when it was originally released! So top marks to Toshiba for that :) I miss the days of tinkering around with PC hardware, a combination of now having worked in IT for around 20 years and manufacturers starting to put 'thin and light' as a priority over upgrades and repair means the novelty has worn off sadly...at the moment I use a Dell gaming laptop with a 1060 graphics card for...Chrome, Chrome and erm Chrome 99% of the time!

We used to use those laptops in school they had a mobile computer lab that had all of them connected that we would use in our classrooms. :) It's cool to see one get restored!
The TrackPoint was perfect for playing Doom or Tie Fighter back in the day.
I just wanna say u got scammed for that charger, i have one that is exactly the same apart from the fact i can adjust the voltage and i got it for a little less than 40 usd brand new from a tech repair store

Having an old Windows is good for files that you want to keep secret etc as I highly doubt anyone would think of hacking this type of laptop.
I used to have this laptop as a kid and I loved the hell out of it, I lost it at some point and couldn't for the life of me remember what the model was. Thanks! Now I can go look this guy up on eBay...
I had a similar laptop by HP (Compaq) with windows 95. It had so many freaking ports. All I did was play Doom on it. Miss old times

I own a small computer shop and get old stuff in all the time, I love getting them back to working condition. Ita restement to how well stuff was made back then. I doubt we will ever see a 25 year old MBP ever work or the pooh HP and Toshiba are putting out now.
even lenovo has now degraded to the quality-level toshiba was at 20 years ago. plasticky, kinda meh consumer units instead of solid business devices that can take a beating. sadly they're still a step above everyone else with that these days

Nice video! You should remove the CMOS battery though, those proprietary rechargable ones can leak and ruin your motherboard
Yup, especially in case of Toshibas. They used NiCd and later NiMH rechargable coin cell packs which tended to leak with age. The battery acid ends up traveling down the wiring and destroying the board around the connector. It's really sad how many light grey Toshibas (486 to Pentium II era) I had to diagnose as a total loss because the leaky BIOS and suspend-to-RAM battery packs had annihilated the motherboard, despite the laptops looking mint from the outside

After coming here from the iPhone 13 video, these old laptops are a breath of fresh air for repair. My Toshiba Satellite 2545xcdt had everything fully accessible and replaceable (Including a socketed desktop CPU!) with just a few Phillips head screws. My dell even goes as far as to have the floppy, battery, and CD-Rom drives on slide out modules.
The Toshiba ones even generally carried parts over for many models, so many replacements exist, and if you know how to fix one you can easily fix another.

Wow this brings back memories.. the very first laptop I had from work back around 2000... This thing was a pleasure to use, never had a problem, travelled with me in 3 continents, lots of pleasant and some less pleasant moments. Didn't have a LAN adapter built-in iirc , and that was a huge problem even back in the day as PCMCIA LAN adapters were expensive (the good ones from 3COM at least) and thus not allowed! No USB at that time... It is really dismaying how this almost universal and most practical standard (USB) is now deprecated as obsolete...
