  • As part of the Kinetic Rock and Roll Smart Control Zwift Gear Test for TitaniumGeek, we need a sound test - and this is it!
I've moved over to some different software for the testing now, giving a graphical overview at the end of the test. Quite interesting here is that to trainer seems loudest at around 400 watts, rather than at the peak power!

Each test previously has been performed with the phone 5cm away from the actual source - so I've tried to maintain that throughout for that data at least to be comparable. Although now the microphone is angled toward to unit for better measurements, so it would make sense for me to reshoot all of them (give me time).
The audio in the video is actually recorded from the iPad. I fully get your point through about the difference in tone vs straightforward decibels. This is something I have tried to cover by having the volume recorded from a different source to the actual audio on the video, which was from about 1 meter away

I'd steer clear of anything to do with Kurt Kinetic especially if you want to use an android device. Head on over to their website and see the number of people complaining about the app crashing. I didn't think about that before I bought it and you can imagine how frustrating it is half way through a ride to have the app crash and lose all your data. It's been an issue for a few years by the looks of things and they can't be bothered to sort it out properly. It leaves you with a near useless trainer where you can pedal blindly unless you are subscribing to Zwift or similar. Mine also leans to the left. If you look closely at the video you can see theirs does to as the right foot comes off the ground. Common occurrence judging by the forums. You can dismantle and reassemble the mechanism to see if that works or as one person suggested stick a magazine under the foot to raise it up. I don't expect to do that after spending hundreds on a trainer. If you really want to see how much they care about the customer, look at how old their videos are on CZcams. Says it all really. The rock and roll seemed like a good idea but you'd be better off spending your money with one of the more established manufacturers.

Great insight and it's noticable how few people on the virtual cycling platforms now talk about these trainers.

This isnt a bad test, but I feel there is some flaws in it. For one, the microphone isn't picking up much of the sound at all, so its hard to tell what it actually sounds like. Secondly, there's quite a difference in Db from having the meter directly next to the unit, vs having it positioned a meter or 2 away. Also, the wattage doens't usually matter as much as the RPM of the flywheel does, so spinning a harder gear at 200 vs an easy gear at 200, will be drastically different.
From my own experience with trainers thus far, the noise level is most important when it coems to cycling in a small or shared space, like a bedroom or small aprtment, in which case you'd probly be more interested in how loud it is from a slightly further out position than the motor itself. This was the deciding factor for me when buying my Tacx Neo, as even though the Drivo and the Kickr are very close Db-wise, the sound pitch and travel of said sound, was quite different between them all.

Can you tell me if you have a separate cadence sensor on the bike or are you relying on the trainer? My trainer is not communicating cadence correctly. It just stays at 60 and i'm wondering if the power #'s are off because of this.

I normally use the cadence and power meter in the turbo for the sound tests Havnt seen an issue here, but Kinetic have only just posted their latest firmware, so need to return to finish this review - I'll check for you, but it will be next week now - hpe that is ok?
