I wish I was as talented and brave as this guy. Your lifestyle tells us that we do not need a big house and the junk that we collect over the years to live happily. You inspire so many people FF, you are awesome!
Yes tbh this is the same reason i started watching foresty since way back when he was in his smaller vehicle.
I had a Pontiac Montana , long version which was pretty small. Forestry had the short length
model, CRICKEY! Tiny fer sure!
Not being able to stand in my van would make me grumpy. He is exceptional.
Sitting on couch.
Want beer.
Open fridge from couch.
Take beer.
Close fridge.
*crack* ahhh.
Truly you are a king.
I miss the forestry forest sound track. The song occasionally pops into my head and makes me smile 🤓
I hate that song, I’m in this habit of auto fast-forwarding every video 15 secs on the chance he’ll play it.
As the world sinks ever further into totalitarian darkness, we have a shining light in the north called Foresty Forest. Live free my friend and thanks for the great videos.
Watching from Portugal, no boondocking allowed in Portugal, big fines for sleeping in your van anywhere but a campground. They are blaming van dwellers for everyone else’s trash. So very sad.
I feel like beer review could be a quick and easy addition to the show. You walk us through the food, but the drink pairing is just as important!
Strange Brew would be an appropriate movie to watch in this van; take off eh!
This Dude is Awesome at 5:21 he legit got a Sewing Machine in his Van Nice
When you're driving while air frying you know you're living in the future. There are probably a bunch of busy parents that would like that setup.
Favorite channel on all of CZcams!
Me too. I watch a few Wood Working Channels and a couple Outdoor channels , But his is still my Favourite. No fluff , lives on his terms , not arrogant , and just a good guy. 🇨🇦
I busted out laughing on the ending ! Thanks Foresty Forrest...
The combo of the freezing cold temps with snow covered trees while inside the toasty Van with a wood fire stove is perfection.
A “35 amp hour meal - not too bad”, cracked me up - so true to measure by watching the juice consumption and making electrons jump!
Maybe he will figure out a way to use the fan on the wood stove as a generator.
I guess we tend to measure tasks in the resource that is most precious to us, living in the rat race its time - when you have all the time in the world but power is limited that is the resource to measure.
Hey Foresty, usually there are people selling firewood in small communities. Not the ones that live near campsites. But places selling full cords of quality hardwood. Once you found a good network of em you can load up super cheap. Maybe even buy 1/2 a cord and ask if you can keep it stored there
Cheers.
I am truly concerned (NOT) about all the electrons, protons, and neutrons that were killed in that 35amp hour meal. We know from your contented smile that their sacrifice was not in vain! LOL!!!
the shots of you driving the van are so cool. i cant imagine how long it takes just to get a couple shots like that.
I love the way that he tackles almost anything.
He's more capable of doing various handyman type things than 99% of people.
The care you put into capturing footage and editing never ceases to amaze me.
Foresty.. get yourself a small dehumidifier. I do resin work all year where most people have to stop in the rainy or snowy seasons. I’m able to keep it going with a little bitty dehumidifier! Every few days it needs the cup emptied from all the accumulated water it pulls from the air in my studio. Easy peasy & it brings the humidity from 70, 80 or even 90% down to 20ish%. In your van it would probably do even better bc it’s a smaller space. You know when it’s needing emptied bc it auto clicks off. Just put a note on the dash to remind yourself to dump the cup out before you drive off so it doesn’t spill. Love your videos.. it’s wonderful, especially bc I hate the cold, to see you out there doing things. Even sitting around the fireplace shooting the shit for a while & making a meal👌. Thanks for sharing.. we’ve been hunkered down for so long you are truly a big breath of fresh air 🙌💯💯💯
@@pamflowers8364 heya Pam ..the unit I did is from Tenergy.. it was around $80 or so a year ago. For my little studio it’s amazing.. it’s around 10’ x 14’ space (heel to toe lol) It has a small hepa filter but it can run without it to collect even more moisture. Either way it’s a nice thing. I had another that had a nightlight at the bottom over the water tray - can’t remember what brand now & I gave it away bc I wanted an air filtering model without using more space & plug ins for separate unit.
Edit: it had a few comments about not being able to get replacement filters. I haven’t had that issue bc other companies offer it as well. The filters last 4 or 5 months so far👌
I'm always amazed at the long drive-aways or the long approaches in various You Tuber videos.
A recent video on Kara & Nates channel, of Nate solo climbing with a guide (well, solo as far as not being with his wife) really made it clear. His guide was a bit mystified by the extra time Nate was taking setting up the camera for the various shots.
That run back across the bridge ... that drive-away on that dark, morning drive out. That's dedicated hard work. Thank you.
Foresty I've no doubt you will look back on these years of your life as some of, if not they best years of your life. I travelled 20,000 miles across land throughout Europe between 2015-2020 and it fills me with glee when I reflect back on the experiences I had. When I watch your videos I get a little reminder of what it was like to truly live the free life and to travel without restrictions. You really are living it large and keeping the spirit of travel alive in your CZcams channel. Thank you and stay safe out there :)
[gasp] that opening drone shot! 🔥🥰
Never sewed before, you inspire me. Got a Sailrite portable machine, learning as going. What a great skill. Putting it to use, thanks.
I started practicing on paper too. Just using the needle without the treath.
Idk why this is my favorite FF episode, it just feels so right
you are such a lucky man simon, living the dream....
You would think this from the videos. It must be extremely lonely and boring the rest of the time. You really have to be a loner to do this. Not for everyone that’s for sure.
I'm 100% positive that 15:36 to the end was filmed in real time. FF is bionic man.
@@markakira8988 I am the one that needs help MA? You are the one that thinks they are too good to show respect.
@@elainecrowley4774 Chill out, meant no disrespect by abbreviating on a phone. You've never abbreviated in your life. I'm a FF Patreon member. I've had nothing but positive comments for FF for several years. Yet for someone to jump to conclusions and SHAME me and get angry over me saying FF is pretty shameful.
Nothing wrong with this comment at all. Since when did bigging someone up become offensive?
That outtake at the end was hilarious! Glad you're OK, I think you need a bigger skillet tho.
No need for a dislike button for you Foresty... everybody loves you. PS, love the ending, haha. Nice.
Love the cubic mini, looks like it's working out well!! I swear, there's nothing like the ambiance of a wood stove. Have a great Tuesday, Forest!
Hello Brian....I should have figured that you follow Forest's Channel....So Nice to see you here....Kisses to Sierra 🌻
Get a bumper rack or box for the wood. Keeping it inside just brings in moisture and insects. Also the moisture reader to get dry wood to begin with is a good idea. Keep up the great work, Cheers from Mtl !
On the firewood... Standing dead is usually a lot drier than horizontal dead, even if it is off the ground.
Idk if I am more shocked by the instapot cooking strapped to the front seat or the sewing machine! 😳🤯 you continue to amaze me
You'll be able to see creosote building up way before it ends up being a problem since you take it apart so much. You can get a chimney brush off Amazon for a few bucks that you can run through every month or so, they are sized for a particular chimney diameter. Just make sure to get a poly brush, not a steel one. The steel brushes are for brick chimneys and will scratch up your chimney wall (which helps new creosote build up).
I agree, it is normal to burn pine where I live and as long as you sweep your chimney occasionally there will be no serious problems.
I enjoy these " just a day in the life" type videos. I'm all about DIY so I really like seeing your projects, even the sewing 🧵!
When you head to the states maybe you'll happen upon Brian @ adventure van man. He doesn't seem to do epic hikes like you but seems super chill down to earth dude.
Safe travels
Brian is in New Mexico perhaps going to Arizona for the weather. Foresty, Brian, and Chrome (van city vanlife) are the only van dwellers I follow religiously. It amazes me how they are different in temperament, personality, and life style while living in a van :)
I played FF and SUV Rving for my granddaughter she loved to watch them at 8 yrs old.
@Guy Martin forgot to mention Tristan. He is one old school hiker/climber, too. I guess I don’t consider him a van dweller. He’s more like me, car camp in order to hike:)
A stealth woodpile sounds like a great idea!
FF don't listen to the crap about pine creating more creosote than hardwood, that's a myth, you are absolutely correct it's the moisture content that is the key factor in reducing creosote and getting nice hot fires, and with that being the case one of the best types of wood you can find in the bush that will have the lowest moisture content is "Beetle kill" Lodgepole pine. Research it yourself, the way that tree dies from the blue bacteria the beetle introduces into the outer layer of the tree prevents the moisture absorbed through the roots of the tree from going up the trunk and into the branches of the tree and essentially the tree dies by desiccation. Look for standing dead trees where the tree has been dead long enough the needles have already turned gray, if the needles are still orange the tree will likely have > 25% moisture content. Idealy you want the wood you burn in your stove to have < 20% moisture content. Trees that have already fallen on the ground generally have higher moisture content than standing dead trees because of their proximity to the ground and the fact that they are exposed to and receive more moisture from the rain and snow. I repeat, look for standing dead beetle kill lodgepole pine with gray needles, they will be the ones that have been dead the longest and dried (seasoned) the most. Get that moisture meter and you can test everything you cut yourself, you will see what Im saying is the truth.
Also, by burning properly dry wood the glass on your wood stove will stay cleaner and not get black so fast.
Hey Foresty, try cooking the onions first and brown them and then add the ground meat, the flavours will be that much more impactful in the final dish! :)
15:36 we appreciate the extraordinary reaches you go to to bring us along on your adventures! The shared knowledge and learned skills help even experienced outdoors enthusiasts. You have built this channel and brought us together like a digital tribal leader :]
Awwww we all worry for Foresty 🥰🤗
I like the standing dead wood when I can find it .It is very dry and burns well .
Good times when the snow plow comes in the night. Imagine if you were pulled off the road in the Uplander! Time to get out the shovel.
Wow. My great grandmother said when they wagon trained across the Canadian prairies to homestead in Sask they started late in the season and the only thing that saved them from freezing to death was her feather tic. Funny what 120 years will do.
And *guaranteed* some friendly native people. Settlers would not have lived through a winter without the original inhabitants teaching the newbies how to survive the land.
Your ancestors might have come over on the mayflower but my ancestors were here to greet them. xo
Dude when it cut to you cracking one open in front the fire... damn brother I’m envious
that wood stove is a winner
Foresty has a fireplace all he needs now is a little miniature Christmas Tree and your good for the holidays! The van looks pretty cozy. Beautiful footage of that area it truly is a winter wonderland there. Much more nicer than here in BC right now.
Good to see you Forest…
Glad your safe….
You should cut the paneling that's within that wooden square you just cut out and put fireproof insulation under that alu sheet. Not only will it up the fire proof rating, but also insulate that whole portion. If you do this, let the insulation hang over the sheet of metal, over the wood, and screw it in, then cut the excess with a sharp knife OR run it over the wood with a piece of trim. That way, the wood is 100% outside the reach of heat and cannot get accessed by any fire.
Mr Forrest.... that was a Epic slow- motion woodchop 13:36
As if your adventures don't pull in my heartstrings as it is and your enthusiasm 4life and the enrichment that you bring to Van life you had to turn around and do one more thing and pull out the sewing machine. I can say I love you and it is a healthy thing. You are a fantastic person May our paths cross one day
Forestry you show off the scenery is amazing I am jealous of your lifestyle and ability to move your home to each location. Stay warm and enjoy.
Welcome back
That final scene during the credits roll. So that's how Simo... I mean, Foresty, sets up those types of shots. I always thought his drone camera was hovering stationary in place. Turns out the camera is tripod-mounted and that lots of running is involved.
Don't worry too much about the flue issue, as you said, you'll have to look at it every time you take it off and put it on.
Wood seasons without having to be dry or undercover.
As long as its dead a while, a season for small stuff, a couple for bigger stuff, you'll be ok. It just needs to be off the ground to stop it staying damp.
A dead tree connected to the ground will be wetter than one snapped off or fully blown down and ripped out.
I've cut trees that had obviously been dead a long while, but they were full of water and had to be seasoned almost as long as a fresh felled one!
Do keep an eye on stuff, but don't let the worryers impart their fears on you.
Keep up the good work mate.
Love your style.
Well said. I'm glad I checked the comments first as I was going to tell him the same thing.
I like how every time you make food you always have a smile on your face haha.
Thanks, the shot of you driving out of the woods onto the road was epic.
Just messed up a crucial exam for a course in my computer science minor. Multiple all nighters in the past week studying... this could end up making me fail the course, therefore delaying the completion of my minor for another year. Let alone the wasted $ on a course I probably won't pass. Feel so down on myself. I knew the content, had everything right in front of me and just wrote a bad test. Couldn't focus, mind was racing, couldn't remember simple concepts, and the worst.... i immediately remembered everything right when i finished. But hey, at least theres a foresty forest video waiting for me. Your videos are always a source of comfort, even in the most stressful and bad times. Your videos are greatly appreciated, and mean a lot to your viewers. Love from Toronto !
Watching this from the Mojave desert 🏜, just a little bit different weather here lol…… 70 and dry as a bone. This is making me crave the cozy wintery vibes of up north now ❄️ ❄️ the grass is always greener right?
I'm watching this from a ladyb0ys apartment while she's in the kitchen making me dinner. I sure do appreciate it a lot more now
How's the desert? I'm just north of S.F. near the coast. Overcast and 50 today. Love the desert. Maybe some day I'll break the shackles.
Bruh I'm from the Midwest and you can't be inviting that kind of negative temperature energy over here. Canada can keep that shit
@@dereksimmons5877 😂😂 I hear you man I’m from the Pacific Northwest so normally I’m done with it all by this time of year but being in the desert sun for a few weeks has got me thinking backwards 🤣
@@photopicker it’s awesome, Death Valley and the Mojave preserve at this time of year are just perfect! I Haven’t seen rain in weeks on this little road trip im on from NW Oregon where it’s non stop rain right now. But ya gotta love being away from all those people and traffic out in the desert, that’s for sure 🏜 🌵
Just leaving a comment to help the algo. Nice video as always foresty! Youre an inspiration. Less is more.
My week is now complete.
I loved the scene with Foresty running back across the bridge 😂
That’s great mobile cabin complete with wood stove.
It’s great you did a recap of your entire electrical system and other aspects of your van. It’ll help the rookies to the channel.
I use a small dehumidifier in our van to keep the windows clear, works a treat.
You must be the only van dweller that has a sewing machine in their van..... Actually I am amazed at all the gadgets you do have to hand
Hey Foresty,
I thought I remembered you said you might head south this winter now that the border is open.
Death Valley is nice this time of year with miles and miles of off roading.
A little change of scenery.
Yes sir I’ve just left spending about 8-9 days in the Death Valley region and it’s a beauty this time of year, a lot of roads I had to turn back on with my RAV4 he’d eat up with the 4x4 cargo van
The desert sounds tempting! It's been 20 years since I've been to death valley.
He did say he was headed down to the states in two weeks 👌 Can’t wait to see where all he travels here. 💯💯👏👏✨
Bud did you watch the video ? At one point he says he’s heading south in a couple weeks.
The views are so epic.. especially at the beginning with the mountains and snow covered trees perfectly paired with the soothing music
I was an aero space mechanic we measured everything 3 times just to be sure no exceptions it seemed to work out perfect it seems you can be wrong twice but the third time is usually the charm
If folks are concerned about you, then they care. So safe travels
Hello, I enjoy your content. BTW, I saw another YouTubber that attempted to cross into the USA. He was carrying a small load of wood for campfires. Border Patrol had him turn around and unload the wood. If and when you travel into the states you should check that regulation. Peace.
Thanks, Becky, I did not know that hauling firewood from state to state was also illegal.
@@johnhambyphotography we found out the hard way going to camp out of state with our camper to a state park. Park Ranger educated us. It is about bug and disease containment. He gave us the Emerald Ash Borer example. It hit home.
Even more restrictive in Canada...supposed to consume it where you acquire it. Technically, if you get firewood in Banff National Park, you shouldn't be bringing it into adjacent Kananaskis Provincial Park (same province).
You are so talented in so many areas. I hope someday you meet Joseph from “ Sharing the Wild.” I think you two fellas would have a lot in common!
I'm living my life vicariously through Foresty
1. Hope you're feeling better after some rest, don't worry about the downtime on YT :)
2. You made me hungry again, seems a recurring theme with each video !!
I'm chilling in the Rockies(Colorado) this winter too! Happy to see you still out and about, your editing and camera shots are so good!
Those drone shots, especially the one rising out the trees were amazing! Your work is always a pleasure to watch Foresty
Dude, you hike to a lot of dangerous out of the way places, could you talk about your Garmin GPS communications and how you publish a planned departure and arrival to people who know about your whereabouts and rescue plans?!
That's what I wanna know. He doesn't strike me as someone who'd like to check in on a regular basis lol.
I think I saw him use Gaia or another phone app to navigate in another episode though.
I am so happy to see this video. I was getting a bit worried about you. Glad to know that you’re ok. Take care and stay safe. Love your videos.
For your firewood, try to find standing dead trees as they tend to be much drier. It seems like the Rocky Mountains has a lot of insect kill standing dead trees.
Yaaay!!...So Good & Happy to see & hear you are all good!!... Was worried if you had got stuck on one of those roads in B.C. that had landslides or washouts...No worries about taking some downtime, you deserve it!!... Totally get it when laptops/internet etc become technically challenged as I too have been experiencing the same on & off for many, many months...Can't wait to see what is coming next, but take all the time needed for yourself!!
Cheers to you & your fam!!
Doctor gave me a relaxation cassette. When my blood pressure gets too high, the man on the tape tells me to say, 'SERENITY NOW!'
i was worried too, seems he was bisy with his paying viewers...oh well
Haha I smiled at the closing scene. I guess I'm not surprised you set up that camera on foot, but it's still impressive. Nice to see your well equipped home functioning in the winter, cozy vibes and beautiful scenery. Thanks for all the work you do to bring us this amazing channel!!
I miss your bike packing. I hope you do another bike packing trip someday when you get bored!
You are an amazing individual. Jack of all trades. Your van is dialed in for adventure. One of the best sites on CZcams.
I have contemplated living like that but I highly doubt that I would make it one month. Thanks for the great videos!
It'll be exciting once you get to the states! Lots of beautiful places to hike!
that was quite a nice presentation to a group of electrical and mechanical engineers. most of us have no idea of the basics of powering your van much less any idea of the equipment used....
Gotta say when I saw the plastic bag you used to catch clippings in, it brought many memories like telephones with rotary dials. Kauai has a plastic bag ban _(which is a good thing)_ to help reduce the carbon footprint & have less plastic end up in the ocean so seeing your plastic bag was very nostalgic 😁💭💭☎️📞
A Blast From The Past! 💥😎🤙
Straight pipe and you are on it all the time, so from someone who grew up with wood heat and cookery, you are good to go with green. There are brushes and rods for cleaning. The meal reminded me of school lunch “tamale pie” from my Arizona 1960’s childhood. Not bad.
I was a Firefighter for 28 yrs. I went to many chimney fires. The problem that most people have with wood stoves building up creosote is that they damp them down so much that the creosote cannot be burned off. You need a "clean" wide open burn every so often. You can not make a firebox full of wood last 12 hrs. without causing problems. A gas engine will not run right if you restrict the airflow, neither will a wood burner. Mike from Mass.
Sound advice, Mike.
We had a chimney fire years ago at the old homestead on the coast of Maine...happens very quickly, and unless one is right there and knows how to deal with it - can be disastrous...
My experience with wood stoves is burn rounds , split wood burns fast and sleep with only a sheet over you so when stove drops only a couple of degrees you'll wake up with plenty of coals left .
Fogging on the inside of the windows can also be a sign of carbonmonoxide buildup. But I think you have a detector for that.
Today's tip: You can find broken pallets in industrial areas or behind larger stores. Usually it is quite dry wood.
make sure its not painted or has a mark with M on it, its been preserved with PCP and the fumes are dangerous.
And most companies want people to take it away for free as it costs them for rubbish removal
When the wood stove was added, I thought to myself, I wouldn’t do that in my van…. Now it’s looking very appealing!
O:03. Embrace the darkness. Resist the cold! Great opener!
I ❤️ it when you bring back elements of fav videos past such as the warp speed trek back from setting up a shot and pulling out the sewing machine. The slow mo chop was solid👍
Nice work mate from Australia 🤠🤙
That little woodburner must make all the difference in the world.
Great addition to your home.
I like sewing & making practical things and like it when you haul out your sewing machine. Good you are on top of the creosote thing.
Thanks Forest! I love those "up and over the peak" drone shots. At my age its like remembering what a roller coaster was like.
I LOVE these project videos! I find it insane that you make whatever you need and seem to have an infinite supply of tools in your van. Also, I love how functional the van's interior has become. It's a mishmash of things you've needed to do over time. It looks so cool. You've done an incredible job. Your old van was nice, but this has become so much better. (Not to mention the AWD!). Thanks for these entertaining videos!
He gets what he needs, but it's not like he's Grizzly Adams...he does visit town(s) from time-to-time.
Dude has a sewing machine-I’m beyond impressed! Wow. Middle of nowhere, and he pulls out a sewing machine. Can you say ‘MacGyver’? I knew you could!
I now live in the Canadian Rockies. Part of my school's education program oh so many decades ago was survival training on the Coastal Mountains of BC. More recently in the Rockies part of my daughter's high school curriculum was living a week in wilderness survival training ... living at 1,800 meters (6,000 feet) in 4 meters (12 feet) of snow in January. The kids saw it as a huge party but it was learned skills that will last them a lifetime. I don't know if these programs are offered in all areas but our schools teach you to live in the wilderness, cook, sew, build a fire, etc.
That’s amazing. Um no, here in the USA the only survival skills being taught in school is snitch a shooter drills 🥲
