I got the new Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa

- I finally got my visa! I started this process nearly six months ago and in this video I walk you through all the steps I went through and how to go about applying. I could have applied for the D7 or the D8 based on my situation, but it seemed that the D8 was a more straight forward and obvious path for me.
I couldn't have done this without the Facebook group "Americans in Portugal," which is a wealth of information in the form of its community and the checklist they provide.
You definitely DO NOT need to hire an agency to help you prepare for the application; if you have half a brain you can do it on your own, though it is helpful to hire someone to obtain your NIF and possibly open a bank account.
I also recommend spending time on the ground in Portugal prior to applying in order to find a home and go in person to the bank to open your account. I spent three months in Lisbon before my VFS appointment making sure I really wanted to live there, finding a place to live and opening a bank account (this was a lot more annoying and difficult than I could have ever imagined).
Portugal is a slow moving country so this process requires an immense amount of patience and perseverance.
I probably won't reply to direct questions about this process; I recommend joining the Americans in Portugal Facebook group and reading the documents there, doing your own research and figuring things out on your own as these are essential skills to being able to adapt in a new country. I'm not a visa consultant and don't want to be :)

We have our D8 visa appointments next week and I've been a bit nervous because our situation is the same as yours, we own a business and aren't paid a set salary and just take money out of the business as needed so it's a bit of a different situation than most people. The immigration process in the US is even worse. It took me five years and cost me $5,000. I'm interested in the Spansh digital nomad visa and have convinced myself it will be a breeze in comparison, lol. The Spaniards have a rule where if it takes over a certain time, it's automatically approved (I hope they still have it!). I'm considering the Portuguese one as a backup. Also, would an airbnb booking be okay to show as residence when I arrive or do I have to have a lease agreement?

I've got a one question though, is it required to show a 1 year lease for a rental to get the digital nomad visa? Because it doesn't really makes sense if your application gets denied you're stuck with a 1 year rental that you can't actually live in...?

Hi, Congrats!!! Always feels daunting going through something like this but I'm glad it worked out for you! Do you know if the Portugal D7 or D8 require you stay in Portugal for a minimum amount of time each year? I ask because I believe the Spain nomad visa requires a person physically be in the country for 6 months minimum per year, which isn't the worst thing in the world 😄. Congratulations! Adrien, me and my husband want to apply to d8 too. How much does 3040 gross euros to net? I find some calculators but all them are different. Please guide us, we want to learn if we have sufficent income

Before getting a visa, I can show my minimum income of 3040 euros for 6 months. but after getting the visa, it may stay below 3040 euro for some months, for example, I may not be able to work fully during holidays and the months I am sick. Is there any problem after getting this visa when i want to extend the visa, can the SEF check my income after getting the visa and prevent me from renewing the visa because i have earned less for some months?

Dear Adrien, I thought about you and your process today, and bamm, you show up with great news! Congratulations and welcome back! Stuff like visas and burocratic stuff are stressful and time consuming everywhere, and 🇵🇹 has been slammed with more and more processes for visas and residency permits. FYI, my sister is, Portuguese like I am. She is married to an US citizen. She and her family moved back home last June. Her husband is entitled to immediate residency and citizenship as they have been married for 20 years, but here we are in May 2023 and only the 1st phase of his residency process is complete! 🙈 As you probably know, unless you are a bonafide resident here, you cannot enroll in the national medical scheme, our SNS, and that's frustrating, but that's how busy they are. Now it gets easier for you Adrien, so enjoy. 🙏👍❤️🇵🇹

You don't need to submit a 1 year lease. A hotel reservation is enough. I submitted a booking reservation for one week and got approved. You made the process super complicated while it's quite easy. Just provide what they ask for in their official website. NIF is not needed either

@AdrienField that was my personal experience. I think you were over prepared, as you said. I submitted my application in Bangkok. So not sure if you were asked to provide all of these.
