This quite literally saved my life. You should be proud of yourself for making such an inspiring animation. It doesn't matter that it doesn't have a million views yet. For how young the animation is what it's got is phenomenal. I'd love to see more animations+art from you. Probably gonna do a little sketch of the boy and his dog later. @artist_of_nightmares. The saddest part of this in my opinion is that his parents probably think he went for a nice walk and found a dog and would not have known about their son killing himself
I've suffered bad depression for YEARS, So too did my 24y/o nephew who found a private area in a newly opened state park in Va in Feb 2014. He didn't want to be found & he thought no one would EVER find him. His body was found hanged by a random lone jogger later that cold Sunday afternoon. I l never got over his death.
I know the feeling. I starved myself as an and it lead to stunting my growth and causing other damages. But now, I use fasting as a way of keeping healthy. My desire to not eat is now a way of staying healthy instead of my childhood way of slowly and might I add, rather painfully, killing myself.
Putting the obvious thing to the side, what scares me is the fact that somebody abandoned that dog and let it drown just for the sake of it, it is disturbing and sad, I'm glad both of them got to live safely after all
I also saw some sort of similarity in which the dog had a noose (leash) wrapped around its neck while in the water. Idk maybe I'm overanalyzing though.
@@mikebryant6388 2:22 i think what happened is the previous owner tied the dog to a log that he thought would be secure on land but was near the ledge. when the owner left to do whatever they were gonna do, eventually that log rolled off, along with the dog that was bound to the log with the leash, hence the camera panning to the other logs on the hence i think this makes a lotta sense
He probably just doesn't want to hurt people. I mean if he didn't care about hurting people or leaving them to rot he wouldn't have followed the sound of the distressed dog

Sometimes when given a second chance… people like him don’t actually want to die but want to live to die another day… unfortunately a lot of people die by suicide and it’s a real problem… it constantly looms over me so I’m happy awareness is being raised. Nobody should deal with it and especially not alone. But tears aside very good animation!!
Some people deep down don't want to die but don't see another wayout, for a serie of reasons. Maybe their minds are playing tricks with them, maybe they haven't someone to give them support, or they think no one will care. It's a desperate act that never should be judged.

I like how at the end he’s fighting to live, unlike the other way he would’ve gone, where he willingly dies. He WANTS to live and was trying his hardest to keep going. I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, but you are needed and loved! ❤️

I love how he used the thing he was gonna end his life with to save himself and something else. It shows how by living and fighting you’re able to do wonderful things even in the darkest time.
i think it's nice how the dog saved his life and he saved the dogs. if the dog died before he showed up he would've died and if he didnt show up to kill himself the dog would've died.
The dog gave him a purpose. He thought the last thing he wants to do before killing himself is doing a good deed. The thing that was going to kill him saved his life and the dogs life. Pretty ironic
This animation is truly amazing. I remember coming across it, not even knowing what a noose was, when i first started struggling with mental health. Now, as I'm rewatching it after recovering, I feel emotional, knowing that it gets better. I see myself in this young boy (plus the dog looks a lot like mine). I love everything about this video. and to all of those thinking of ending it: don't. it gets better.
That's the point. Sometimes a thing that's usually meant to kill you can end up being the same thing that saved your life. And maybe even someone else's.
When he stared at the dog without reacting I thought to myself "man you're not gonna react". And then I thought about myself 2 years ago when I seriously thought about ending my life in front of my dad and sister. I forgot those feelings and need to empathize more with myself and those who feel much worse about life than me. Thank you for creating this short. I needed that realization

I like to imagine that he goes back home and his parents don’t wanna keep the dog, but then he tells them that the dog is the literal reason that he’s alive and the doggo stays with them.
I know this was posted three years ago but I just discovered it, and I wanted to leave a comment because something in particular hit me. It's a powerful metaphor, the boy taking the noose - the representation of all his pain and anger, everything hurting him in that moment, taking all of his heartache and turning it into something to help another. It's so hard to feel that kind of strength in yourself when you're in the dark places. Thank you for this. Even though I cried and I hate crying, thank you.

11th of November (tomorrow) is where if you have been suffering of a mental illness or suicidal thoughts anything like that you draw a semi colon on your wrist
Its probably because he's been tying those knots. I've been tying them too recently and it does make my arms tired from moving them and all the pressure i have to apply to the curl part.
The part when he save the dog and also fighting for his life is when I cried because I'm so glad that he finds a hope on that darkest time of his life, this is a great story. And I'm also proud for myself that this reminds me of how I give my life a chance to experience more good things and happy memories I will have in my future.
Crying is the price we pay for living. Whether it really is worth it is up to you. As someone who has dealt with suicide, I believe that it has been worth it. If you are still struggling, stick around a little longer. You might see that there is still something there that might make it worth it.
My therapist recommended a dog for me when I admitted to having bad thoughts about hurting myself. I got one from a breeder who breeds specialized dogs to help people with mental illness like depression and she's been with me for almost 10 years now. She's really helped me face the demons in my mind and I hope to be to get a rescue of my own one day.
I think the dog was meant to be a parallel to the boy/be the one to help him The dog was caught in an over powering river and in a life and death situation but he was saved because he yelled out for help The boy has caught in an over powering mess of emotions and in a life or death situation but he saw the dog and heard it's cries for help and saved the dog and the dog saved him as well
i don't have an animal to live for anymore, but as someone who has considered ending it multiple times, the only thing keeping me from doing it at this point is my friends and some of my family. I'm lucky to have friends who care as much as they do about me cause they've helped me through so many things. this is honestly making me tear up, thank you for the message in this.
I have struggled with self harm and my mental health for so many years. I adopted a dog, her name is Vixen. She is very smart, and can detect certain physical and mental health issues. If it weren't for her in my lowest times, especially the past year, I'm not sure I could have made it through the year to be honest. As much as I hate admitting that, I hope I can at least help someone as they read this. Even if only one reason at all, find a reason to keep going. Things really can lift and get better ❤️
Even after SIX years of this animation being on the internet… this still made me cry. I was bullied to where I almost considered the easy way out. Killing myself. I’m… GLAD I’m alive. And to all those who considered suicide or nearly did take their own lives, I’m glad you’re still here.
I saw this video around two years ago. Recently I had a random memory of it. I spent two months looking for it but gave up for a while. It just popped up in my recommendations. It's been hard times lately and this animation hit kinda close to home for me.
Imagine his parents are like: “Oh my god honey where were you?” And this guy goes: “I was gonna go hang myself off a tree but I saved this dog from dying and now I just kinda came back here”
Both of them literally saved each other. The boy saved the dog from drowning and the dog and the dog gave the boy another purpose to live or a strength/will to live. 😢❤
Without the guy saving the dog, the dog would have died. Without the dog calling for help, the guy would have died. Amazing story, beautifully planned out
It's funny how, despite the fact he was about to commit suicide, human curiosity gets the best out of him. He was so willing just to end his life yet he still had the urge to care for others! I really loved this film :)

I think that there is one thing that goes overlooked, and that's the setting, he's in the middle of the woods, usually a setting where characters get lost, like how this character lost what was important to him. But then he saw the dog in the river, something that only has two ways, and usually is the best spot for life to thrive, just like how the dog saved the characters life by realising what good there is, the setting alone is powerful
It really do be like that with dogs. Getting my first dog was 110% a total life changer. If you have the means, go to your local shelter or rescue and find yourself a new best friend. Things might not always be perfect with them, especially at first…but then again, same goes for you-and they’ll still love you unconditionally. Nothing beats coming home from a shit day and having your best friend shower you with love at the door. Great film.
This made me cry. I have two dogs and if I died then they would not get that, they would think I abandoned them. And I can’t not be here with my dogs thinking I left them. Wonderful animation.

Alby Forever yeah, i agree with that; but dogs shouldn’t be the answer as to why we are still alive. true, dogs, as well as other creatures, make people happy because of their positivity and radiating happiness, but depression is a mental illness that can’t be solved with just cute pictures of dog and motivational speeches. in the story, the boy was contemplating on committing suicide when he heard a bark, yes? he stopped to take a look and lo and behold, he saw a dog stuck on his leash, drowning in the river, correct? he had a change of heart from killing himself to saving the dog, and he did so. yada yada, cross river, get dog, put dog on top safely, then climax. the thing that made me say that “dog didn’t do shit” was at the end when boy was about to fall. i thought ‘hey! i bet that dog would hold the rope to save the boy!’, but i was soon disappointed. i get that realistically the dog couldn’t save the boy by pulling the rope since the boy was heavier. to clarify my interpretation of the moral of the story, don’t commit suicide just because you think the world is beating you, and *only* yo alone. others will suffer the same way, and there are people who have been there. those who committed it had a lot on their mind, so i can’t blame them (rip etika). but there are people who can help you, even if they have to risk their lives just for you, and i think that’s sweet. oh yeah, fuck the dog though. dog could’ve just hooked the rope to the trunk or log.
I've been watching this since around the day it came out- whenever I'm feeling depressed I like to come back to this to feel better, the story, art, and soundtrack is so amazing
i saw this in my recommended and didn't really want to watch it but i clicked it anyways. i've seen this before, a long time ago. i feel like theres a reason i've been brought back to this video. having the same thoughts as i did when i first saw it. youtube has no reason to recommend this to me, i don't watch short animations nor do i watch anything having to do with suicide.

Speaking from experience, depression is one of the most devastating things that can happen to you; sometimes people take it lightly and just use it as an annoying phrase but when you go through this stuff and get through it there’s no greater feeling in the world after you have conquered what you have fought. I say speaking from experience because when I was twelve I went to an abandoned warehouse where I would chill out after school, once I was there however and these kids offered me some crystal meth, which, unfortunately, I took. I fell into a dangerous spiral of drugs and pain and it got to the point where I would start literally stabbing my own arm with a kitchen knife. This helped me but only made the pain greater, eventually I came to the warehouse one day and it was completely empty, no crackheads, no distractions just me and the world. After about an hour of lying on my back and thinking about how shit my life was I decided that the only way out was death and I walked to the edge of the ceiling on top of the warehouse, because it was abandoned it was just one big complex of floors meaning, no safety rails or any protection. I wrote a note to my mum and dad and brothers about how it wasn’t their fault and they should carry on living their lives without me and not be burdened, with that done I clutched the note in my hand and simply stepped off the edge. However, as I stepped I changed my mind, in that one millisecond I decided that I want to carry on and let myself die knowing I could of done so much more and I started viscously clawing at the passing wall and after what seemed like an eternity I grabbed onto a loose girder and pulled myself up. I sustained no injuries in this attempt and to this single day none of my family know anything about my depression, drug use or attempted suicide. I have however told my friends about this and they haven’t believed me until I showed them the entire notebook full of sorrys and to this day that notebook has been kept under my bed in a floorboard, along with a knife and drug bag. I like to sleep on top of them because it means I have conquered that horrible part of my life and if I ever start to feel sad or lonely I just remember how far I’ve come since that faithful day in the old warehouse. If your still reading this comment down to here, thank you for staying and I hope I’ve persuaded you not to even think about taking your own life. Bye

Wow just wow. I am very sorry you had to go through that and I am glad that you changed your mind in such a short amount of time. I am not having the best life right now, I have had suicidal thoughts and still having them, my family have no idea how I’m feeling but somehow they’re the reason I’m getting through life at the moment. The only thing that stopped me taking my life several times was my pets. Especially my current dog, who was very hostile and bitey after my previous dog passed. I knew if I punched my own ticket, my stepdad would have tried to give him away. He had threatened to do so on many occasions because Ollie was biting a couple wrong people away from being put down.
I'm somewhat relieved when I attempted and was hospitalized, I didn't have access to a firearm or rope strong enough to support my weight. I once read, "don't make permanent stupid decision for a temporary emotion". For the men, women, and children out there, it's always better to see how this life will play out than to quit the game early. Remain strong mentally and emotionally, there are many others out there amongst the billions of us, that have attempted. I'm one and have met many others, we're not as alone as we may feel.

I know this was posted three years ago but I just discovered it, and I wanted to leave a comment because something in particular hit me. It's a powerful metaphor, the boy taking the noose - the representation of all his pain and anger, everything hurting him in that moment, taking all of his heartache and turning it into something to help another. It's so hard to feel that kind of strength in yourself when you're in the dark places.

My therapist recommended a dog for me when I admitted to having bad thoughts about hurting myself. I got one from a breeder who breeds specialized dogs to help people with mental illness like depression and she's been with me for almost 10 years now. She's really helped me face the demons in my mind and I hope to be to get a rescue of my own one day.

I have struggled with self harm and my mental health for so many years. I adopted a dog, her name is Vixen. She is very smart, and can detect certain physical and mental health issues. If it weren't for her in my lowest times, especially the past year, I'm not sure I could have made it through the year to be honest. As much as I hate admitting that, I hope I can at least help someone as they read this. Even if only one reason at all, find a reason to keep going. Things really can lift and get better ❤️

It really do be like that with dogs. Getting my first dog was 110% a total life changer. If you have the means, go to your local shelter or rescue and find yourself a new best friend.
Things might not always be perfect with them, especially at first…but then again, same goes for you-and they’ll still love you unconditionally. Nothing beats coming home from a shit day and having your best friend shower you with love at the door.

in the story, the boy was contemplating on committing suicide when he heard a bark, yes? he stopped to take a look and lo and behold, he saw a dog stuck on his leash, drowning in the river, correct?
he had a change of heart from killing himself to saving the dog, and he did so.

the thing that made me say that “dog didn’t do shit” was at the end when boy was about to fall. i thought ‘hey! i bet that dog would hold the rope to save the boy!’, but i was soon disappointed. i get that realistically the dog couldn’t save the boy by pulling the rope since the boy was heavier.
to clarify my interpretation of the moral of the story,
don’t commit suicide just because you think the world is beating you, and *only* yo alone. others will suffer the same way, and there are people who have been there.

Speaking from experience, depression is one of the most devastating things that can happen to you; sometimes people take it lightly and just use it as an annoying phrase but when you go through this stuff and get through it there’s no greater feeling in the world after you have conquered what you have fought.
I say speaking from experience because when I was twelve I went to an abandoned warehouse where I would chill out after school, once I was there however and these kids offered me some crystal meth, which, unfortunately, I took. I fell into a dangerous spiral of drugs and pain and it got to the point where I would start literally stabbing my own arm with a kitchen knife. This helped me but only made the pain greater, eventually I came to the warehouse one day and it was completely empty, no crackheads, no distractions just me and the world. After about an hour of lying on my back and thinking about how shit my life was I decided that the only way out was death and I walked to the edge of the ceiling on top of the warehouse, because it was abandoned it was just one big complex of floors meaning, no safety rails or any protection.
I wrote a note to my mum and dad and brothers about how it wasn’t their fault and they should carry on living their lives without me and not be burdened, with that done I clutched the note in my hand and simply stepped off the edge. However, as I stepped I changed my mind, in that one millisecond I decided that I want to carry on and let myself die knowing I could of done so much more and I started viscously clawing at the passing wall and after what seemed like an eternity I grabbed onto a loose girder and pulled myself up. I sustained no injuries in this attempt and to this single day none of my family know anything about my depression, drug use or attempted suicide.
I have however told my friends about this and they haven’t believed me until I showed them the entire notebook full of sorrys and to this day that notebook has been kept under my bed in a floorboard, along with a knife and drug bag.
I like to sleep on top of them because it means I have conquered that horrible part of my life and if I ever start to feel sad or lonely I just remember how far I’ve come since that faithful day in the old warehouse.
If your still reading this comment down to here, thank you for staying and I hope I’ve persuaded you not to even think about taking your own life.

The only thing that stopped me taking my life several times was my pets. Especially my current dog, who was very hostile and bitey after my previous dog passed. I knew if I punched my own ticket, my stepdad would have tried to give him away. He had threatened to do so on many occasions because Ollie was biting a couple wrong people away from being put down.
This kids lapse of judgment was pretty serious

I'm somewhat relieved when I attempted and was hospitalized, I didn't have access to a firearm or rope strong enough to support my weight. I once read, "don't make permanent stupid decision for a temporary emotion". For the men, women, and children out there, it's always better to see how this life will play out than to quit the game early. Remain strong mentally and emotionally, there are many others out there amongst the billions of us, that have attempted. I'm one and have met many others, we're not as alone as we may feel.
