- 20 Ford Commercials from 1976 (Elite, Monte Carlo, Cordoba, more)
The 1976 Ford Elite is a personal luxury car produced by Ford and marketed in North American from February 1974 to 1976, with the name Gran Torino Elite used in the first year. Based on the Torino, the mid-size two-door coupe was intended to be a less expensive Thunderbird alternative to compete with the increasingly popular intermediate personal luxury class of vehicles such as the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Buick Regal, Dodge Charger and Chrysler Cordoba. It was essentially the concurrent Mercury Cougar XR-7 with a mild front end restyling to resemble the Thunderbird, different taillamps with a center reflector, unique twin opera windows, and large color-keyed vinyl moldings placed higher on the bodysides. The interiors were identical save for upholstery styles and minor trim.

Description of Ford Mustang taken from Wikipedia "The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from April 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. It was initially introduced as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale the following year. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, sharing its underpinnings with the Falcon, was slotted into a compact car segment.”

It takes some balls to compare a Granada to a Mercedes ....big ones !
That Ford Granada commercial make me really want to buy Mercedes.
I'm a Ford fan, but no way in hell anyone is confusing a Granada for a Cadillac.
$24,000 for a car in 1976 😱😱😱
"The Granada Sports Coupe is not quite a Mercedes but it is not quite $ 23,000 either". They were honest.
I remember my mom bought a lightly used Mercedes about the time the Granada came out. I remember she used to joke that she wanted a Granada, but had to settle for a Mercedes!
"Ford: Okay, we know it's not the best, but just... give it a chance... please?"
The message of the spots is: "we produce cars that look very similar to Mercedes and Cadilac, but ours are cheaper".
My '76 Monarch was pretty rusty by 1998☺ 351 Windsor motor ran like a champ, but rust got the better of the ol' gal after 22 years of salty Ohio roads
Ironically the Mercedes are literally on every corner still .
I love how they weren’t saying that it’s the best but that it’s a good value.
So they're basically saying:
The nostalgia of watching these old commercials is cool.
I was feeling oh so warm & cozy watching these nostalgic commercials with the lovely 70's music in the background & then............"we compared a new Cadillac, a new Mercedes & our brand new Ford Grenada ......."
Our Granada had the best Engine ford ever built the 302 matted with the c-4 transmission. .Car ran forever we owned it for 18 years and we went Everwhere in that car. It was a great car.
The art of automotive advertising was more fun, interesting, and informative in 1976 than today.
I used to drive my boss's Ford Elite on errands. What an elegant, silent, powerful boat of a car it was! I loved that car. Then his wife made him sell it and get a Toyota Celica. I quit shortly thereafter.
"The closer you look, the better you can see body panel gaps wide enough to walk through."
Tom Selleck driving a ford Elite in that commercial!!
We didnt have a Ford Granada, We had a Mercury Monarch... La di Da!
