Learn how to play Baby Blue on guitar as performed by Badfinger. Part 1 of 2. Truly one of the great power pop songs of all time, maybe the first!
Covering the acoustic and electric rhythm guitar parts and the electric lead parts. The secret to sounding like the record is...a Capo on the 4th fret. Trust me, that's how it was recorded. I know you don't see them playing live with a capo, but watch the lesson, try it - I think you'll agree.
Part 2 of this lesson series is me covering the full song against a backing track with bass and drums. See that here • Baby Blue - Badfinger ... .
    Hope you enjoy.

What amazes the hell out of me is way back in the sixties and seventies these bands like the Beatles The rolling Stones bad finger etc. All were geniuses to figure out these songs and these chords? Learning chord shapes that mimic C, D, & G open shapes are a huge help, particularly in country music. With them, you can noodle around until you figure out where the lead singer, (or backing guitarist), has the capo placed. As often as not there's a capo somewhere, especially for the keys of Bb, Eb, & F.. (Bb as G, Eb as C, & D as F. all with the capo at the 3rd fret As you likely know, the other two "open shapes" translate to barre chords. (A, Am, E, & Em)

Baby Blue came out in 1972. I was only 11 when I first heard it and remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard it. I immediately fell in love with the song and out of all Rock&Roll songs ever it was and has remained my favorite Rock song. I just turned 62 and have been playing since I was turned 62 and it's still my favorite. I started playing guitar when I was 10, have written and recorded over 500 original songs but I have never written one I think is better. Sure there's more sophisticated songs but to me it is the quintessential Rock song. I learned to play it before the internet by ear. It's the perfect song!

Pete did not use a capo to play "Baby Blue" live, and most likely didn't when they recorded it. The dual rhythm guitars on this recording are not separated in stereo, so it's difficult to tell what guitar each is playing in what position. 12 Foot chain (which would convert to 3 yards). I really appreciate your playing and your attention to detail. I am also pleased that you liked my drum and bass version of this song. However, I am hoping that one of these days you and I can work together. I have to assume you are a DAW guy. I have been trying to learn Cakewalk for awhile but I am just slow with it. So I prefer using my Tascam. I love that thing. But then we would have a problem exchanging files.

For what it's worth, Joey Molland plays this live without a capo. I still like your version, and I agree that's probably what's on the record. The only catch is that if you're playing it live, it's not ideal to play the solo with a capo on.

    • @noodlegawd
      @noodlegawd Před rokem

By the way, you can also do this with a capo on the 2nd fret, basically playing most of the same chords as the open version, without having to barre them. And this makes the scale parts easier too.

thank you - I don't, but suggest you use the little "gear" icon at bottom of screen to adjust the playback speed to something slower than normal to follow along when i breakdown the solo parts

Love the channel, guitar sounds out of tune or maybe it’s me with this capo😂 I’m fixing to check my intonation.

For me, this was a tough electric part to play well, with the barred c-shape and some challenging chord changes. Much easier to play the acoustic part with a capo, but the capo doesn't sound right to me on the electric part. When playing along with the song, the record seems a bit sharper than standard tuning. Assuming it was sped up a bit. Great song by an underrated, group with a tragic end. The song was the perfect fit for BB's closing scene.

Yeah I used to play this with a band about 5 years ago. I DO THINK THE GUITARS WERE CAPOED. However when we were doing it back then we didn’t know and played it WITHOUT in B . We had two guitars in the band and I was doing the lead…if I was still doing it I would definitely CAPO on 4! Sounds more accurate and nicer voicing . Great job ! My only suggestion is after you show the solos, play them once through in tempo to demonstrate the feel. Thanks

I wonder if the solo would sound OK from the capo 4 position when doing it live? I guess you could try to quickly drop the capo? never tried that before.

I’m glad I found this. I learned the open version from Tone Doctor and when I watched the television performance I noticed something wasn’t just right. You don’t see electric guitars capoed that often and it never occurred to me to try it.

Capo fourth fret yes. And 40 years later I figure Jet Airliner was capoed at the second fret.

On the video, no capo is used. You can see right in the opening shot; he is going from a B major seventh position (E shape) to B sus.

I get it - but I'm thinking about the studio recording. I know you CAN play it without the capo - but I've yet to see a live version that Badfinger plays without the capo where it sounds anywhere near as precise as it does in the studio. videos are out there of them playing it "live" but its clearly the studio instrument track with a live vocal and them miming the instruments. I'm not saying they couldn't have done it without the capo, I'm saying I'd like to see it without the capo sounding like the recording. Yet to see one. happy to be wrong, but still waiting for someone to show me one.

There is no capo used on the main guitar. Listen closely to the first chord, you hear the notes B and F#, you do NOT hear the D# on the A string that you would hear with a capo and the "G" fingering. Why do so many people get this wrong?

  • @noodlegawd

If I might offer a suggestion for your guitar lesson videos: for each section of a song, before you start talking about HOW to play it, just actually play through it first to demonstrate it. This would be helpful for a couple reasons: first, viewers have better context, and second, more advance players may only need to see it being done without the later explanation.

I was using my blackface bassman, treble around 6, bass, 3, ocd for overdrive for both rhythm and lead and dimension C chorus for the rhythm guitar.
