I finally answer the question y’all always ask. And NO, it’s nOT teaching English!
I describe my thought-process when looking for a job in Japan and describe my whole experience with Japanese job-hunting.

I am bACK baby!! Thank you guys so much for your patience during my lil break from CZcams.
As you may have seen from my post on CZcams or Instagram, my father passed away suddenly in November. I’ve taken the past few months to deal with all the estate processes and the emotional processing with my family.
But I’m finally ready to move forward and continue with my CZcams journey; I can’t wait to see where we go with this channel!
As of right now, the Japanese border is still closed, but I’m praying to get there by end of March 🙏 I’ll keep you guys updated on my socials!

Exactly, working in Japan is a fuckin nightmare. It's not just the working hours, but also the strict way of working, narrow-minded boss/colleagues, etc.
People are imagining their lives will be like Pewdiepie but forget Pewdiepie doesn't have to work like normal people. I've seen too many people with unhealthy obsessions with Japan. Good luck to you.

From my experience, the majority of foreigners working in Japan (who can't speak Japanese) basically fall into these categories.
A)"Oh! Your a highly educated person in finance or IT? Here's a 5 year visa with a large salary. Don't worry, you don't need to know any Japanese."
B)"How did you get here? Oh, you transferred internally from abroad? Lucky you."
C)"So you can't speak Japanese but are a native English speaker and you have a degree in some random major. Here's a visa to teach English. It doesn't pay much but don't worry, you're young. You still have time."
D) "So you don't have a degree, you're not a native English speaker...hmm.. Well, we can always use more laborers in the factories."
E)"So you married one of ours I see... Well I guess you can have a spousal visa."
Of course there are many other categories, but the majority I believe fall into these categories.
It is kind of funny, however that I don't belong to any of these categories myself. :p
Wowww true, what a robust list 😂😂 i can definitely vividly see all the archetypes of foreigner in japan 😝 don’t forget “studying abroad / going to a japanese language school” 😌 what’s your case then??
There’s also military and dod contractors (for US) engineering. Typically no Japanese required
I'm C right now, but as it's my last year on JET, I need to start preparing for job hunting soon! X3
factory laborers are typically only accepted from southeast Asian and other developing countries. they're limited to like 7 or 8 years max with no path to permanent residency and the jobs are usually with "black" companies in poor working conditions.
Yeahh being a labourer in japan sounds extremely tough 😥
This seems like such a massive amount of effort and dedication, more than you'd ever need for a job in America. It almost feels like it'd be impossible for me. Mad props for all of this, you're an incredibly smart and talented person.
Thank you so so much for all the kind words 🥺🤧 it definitely felt like a lot of jumping through hoops and hurdles, but that’s the japanese job-hunting process 🤷♂️ but doesn’t take any particular smarts - just a lot of background research and persistence. You are definitely capable if you chose to pursue it!!
In Japan they have specific courses for interviews and job hunting, one way to instill company loyalty I guess, who would bother searching for a new job
Of course not for Otakus, but dedicated people want these opportunities.

About 15 years ago, my company moved me to Japan. Luckily enough for me I was an expat, and honestly it was the easiest way for me to do it - I didn't need to learn Japanese before going and my company paid for me to live in a fairly nice flat with my family. That is definitely another option for those who are interested.
Ahhhh truee, I’ve heard of cases like yours!! Very nice way of doing it, since you have job security and they handle everything to make sure you settle in well. Another reason to work for an international company!

ahahahaha honestly very accurate. I would’ve have been able to submit half-decent applications without my friends, and all their advice and interview practice made a huge different 🥲

That is an amazing story of the hard work and emotional roller coaster you went through, and finally landed that job! I don't know you, but I am so happy for you! You are young and that is the best time to be living life and taking these adventures! So very sorry to read of your dad's passing, that hurts at any age and any level of 'closeness' of the relationship. Sincere condolences, and prayers for you and your family. A sudden passing can be both a blessing and devastating at the same time. My dad suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in November many years ago. As a mom to a son who is (guessing) a few years older than you, but was 8 and with my dad when he died, for what it is worth, my advice to him then and I remind him still when I notice the cloud forming over him, take it one day at a time, and when the grief wave hits out of the blue, acknowledge it, process through it and come out the other side calmer and grateful for the memories and the emotions. Try not to fight these waves out of left field, that probably is not really the best thing for one's mental health. Feeling it, acknowledging it, driving that pothole riddled road to the cross roads and choosing the right turn to embrace and hold onto something positive will really help lessen the severity and frequency of the 'sneak attacks' that grief seems to do to us all. You seem creative, maybe make a tribute webpage or scrap book/journal might be a way to process through a wave. Many blessings, and good luck in your career endeavors in Japan.

I’m sorry to hear that you lost your father as well, as you said, it hurts at any age or degree of closeness. It’s very relatable when you describe grief as launching sneak attacks, cause they do come out of nowhere sometimes. I agree with your advice to your son that embracing the loss and sadness is much better than suppressing it, as I’ve found that also works best for me. Im not the most creative with scrapbooking or hands-on art, but maybe I could make a video about his life sometime down the road; that sounds like a really nice idea! Thank you again for all your kind words and support, even towards someone who is a total stranger to you. It truly means a lot 🙇♂️❤️

I also went through a similar program to get a job in Japan as a software engineer. I know the hardship and the stress of that😵💫
It was one of the most stressful times of my life - and getting rejected by so many companies didn’t help 💀

Of course it'd be nice to be able to reach fluency before six years, (N1 can definitely be reached before then, I know, but there's still a huge difference between N1 and native as I am certain you can attest to!) but it's currently difficult to make the time for immersion with college and work. 😵
My apologies if I have missed this information, but how much time did you used to spend in immersion per day, and what's your own background as a person? I can see you are incredibly skilled as a speaker, videographer, and video editor! Can absolutely see this channel blowing up someday. ^^

I am 19 years old and currently just started my undergraduate program in computer science and my dream is to live in japan and get a job there but i dont really have a clear path and i find your videos really fun to watch so could you please upload videos about how to do stuff like the whole immigration stuff and the necessary things like getting an apartment etc etc would help a lot

that’s fair. But to be honest, I didn’t have a clear path forward until i actually started applying for jobs 😂 so don’t worry about having it all figured out and just move in a forwards direction! and i was actually planning on doing a video on moving in japan, so look out for that sometime in the future 😌

This was a very timely video! I actually live in Boston so I'll have to check out that career forum when the time comes. I was aware of it before when I lived elsewhere and a bunch of my Japanese friends traveled to Boston specifically for that forum before finishing their study abroad program. I have yet to experience what it's like working for an airline living in Japan (they do have some differences in how they operate in Japan compared to the US), but at least in my experience working for a Japanese airline here in America, I feel like it's not a bad route to take either. It doesn't require as much technical skill as many of these finance, IT, or other STEM jobs, but it's still a nice challenge to anyone that has the Japanese skills to take the job.
oooooo definitely really convenient if you’re already living in boston!! And yes, airline seems like a nice balance if you don’t want to need too many technical skills but still want to improve your japanese 🤧 if you already work at a japanese airline, maybe you could inquire about transferring to be based in japan!

Congrats on making it happen! So you had N2 level Japanese before applying it seems? I’ve seriously been considering the JET program because I just got my bachelor’s degree and want to try living in Japan. But I only speak English and Spanish…
I actually had my N1! But the JET programme actually doesn’t require any Japanese knowledge! It’s completely a bonus, but they do want to see that you’re genuinely interested in Japanese culture, and learning the language can be good evidence for this. The JET programme is a fantastic way to have a sheltered way into the country, so i would definitely recommend considering it!! 🥳
Congrats! Just discovered your channel. I know someone who did a similar process to yours, but with a headhunting agency. He didn't share much of his experience, but he met his wife there, got a family and left Japan (with the family). Looking forward for your videos.

@@TokuyuuTV From what he shared, the process was similar at the beginning, lots of interviews and tests, but there was a lot of negotiations since he was a highly specialized worker and they had to "attract" him. Talk about living in the fast lane, he did all that in about 4 years living in Japan! Careful in the dating scene, lots of "gaijin hunters" and "princess"! lol

Here’s from a guy without a plan:
Didn’t bother to check the internet due to a lack of common sense.
-went to Japan (thanks to college loans) because I was heart broken and wanted to get the girl I liked out of my head; figured I’d like Japan since I grew up with Nintendo.
-made a “mistake” by choosing Gifu as my location so I could supposedly get gud at Japanese faster.
-was the worst out of everyone at Japanese and was sort of outcasted for it. Apparently everyone had more common sense than me, took 1-2 years of Japanese preparation before going. The program I went to was a known, difficult program.
-learned almost nothing in class since the classes were n2 level right off the bat and in Japanese.
-failed at multiple relationships with Japanese women because I couldn’t communicate with them.
-Often felt depressed for not being able to participate in even the easiest conversations.
-almost gave up on Japan entirely before meeting my fiancé.
-struggled to communicate with fiancé even after much study.
-found AJATT and RTK1 and at about the same time, my fiancé forced me to watch attack on titan raw with her.
-Went back to my country to get gud at Japanese using AJATT and RTK 1
- went from really terrible Japanese to being able to pass n1
-came back to Japan and couldn’t get hired by anyone, not even an English teaching company because of my high JLPT level.
-finally given a chance by one kindergarten and was depressed at work for not being able to fully use my language abilities and being treated as a fool, being an English teacher (I actually liked the job; I just wasn’t respected)
-got fired for wanting to go see my family during Christmas and was told by many that I wasted my time learning Japanese and that I should’ve just studied business or marketing instead, pairing those skills with an n3 or n2
-tried one last time and got hired by an IT company for being fluent in both English and Japanese.
-almost gave up and went back home but decided to hang in there despite not being prepared for Japan at all and basically lacking all around common sense. Stay foolish

Wow, what an incredible story. I can’t believe all the emotional stress from being recently heartbroken, alone in a foreign country without the language, and in a class that isn’t suitable for beginners. I can totally understand the frustration of not being able to communicate in Japanese, but on top of everything else and LIVING there is just unimaginably tough. I have so much respect for you for sticking through it and passing N1 - absolutely incredible you were able to stay productive and put in all the work while under all that stress. I’m sorry to hear about your negative experiences with jobs, im very surprised places turned you down for being overqualified. But im beyond happy you met your fiance and have found a job where you can fully utilize your language abilities. I wish you nothing but the best moving forward, i think you’ve learned a lifetime of lessons in a short period of time. Please, don’t be afraid to set up plans in the future 😂🙏

On the BCF website, each job posting will often list the salary! If they don’t, it either means it’s really low or it’s negotiable / changes depending on your experience.

@@TokuyuuTV Yeah, according to my latest research teaching english now requires a teaching degree (I'm guessing since that's how a lot of foreigners get there they have more than enough English teachers and can be more choosy) I'll look at that program specifically but I have seen no mention of it in a while
@@TokuyuuTV So I looked into it and the JET programme doesn't require a teaching degree but it still requires a degree and you're only really an assistant and from the look of those numbers it's stupid hard to get in as only around 3k from 57 countries get in. I'm making assumptions from their participation numbers but I damn well know that a lot more than that applied from the US alone. There's a lot more "Terms and conditions" to it and it's nowhere near permanent all and all I think your list is the better option overall as those are permanent. You can also start looking far before you get there with your list with a lot better pay. Thanks for the wishes mate.
So funny! It was a very long time ago when I worked in Japan (yes, teaching English) and I used to go to companies to teach English on-site. I used to see people reading the newspaper and sleeping at their desks so it struck me then that while people were under pressure to stay at work a long time, it was more about time spent than work achieved!

It is pretty crazy to see that you have to go through three rounds of interviews before they can decide whether to accept or not to accept you into their company in comparison to the interviews here in the U.S where you only need to go through one to two rounds of interviews. I knew only verrrrry basic keigo (if i were to do it again, would def want to have learned more basic keigo and practice using it more). I’d say about 70% of the interviewers were in Japanese! It's an exciting journey and I hope you have a great time, but please please please take care of your mental health.
They are still decades behind other countries when it comes to mental wellness.
Over the years I worked in Tokyo, my mental health declined and I caught myself wishing I'd be hit by a car on my walk home from the station so I don't have to go back to work the next day because I just wanted a break so badly.
For better or for worse, my time there taught me exactly where my limit is when it comes to stress tolerance lol
Though I eventually left the country before I turned into a perpetually grumpy office worker, I learned so much from the experience and don't regret it. However, many don't or can't pull out when things get bad and become permanent victims of the toxicity. Stress does crazy things to the mind, so please take care.
Wow, I can’t imagine the level of stress you must’ve been going through to slip into thinking such dark thoughts 😔 it’s really sad that japan is so far behind in terms of work-life balance and mental health. Luckily, my company seems quite forward thinking and im not doing any overtime. But i have felt very tired on some days and it’s an important reminder to listen to your body and give it the break it needs. I’m really happy you grew from your tough experience. I used to work at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Tokyo, and we would have people go to Boston Career Forum every year. We would then interview the top recruits. I had Boston recruits working for me. They were really good, ambitious, worked hard, smart, but weren't likely to stay. Didn't really matter. I think working for a foreign company in Japan is the best. Depending on the company, you usually don't have to work the crazy hours that you have to in a Japanese company. I still tended to leave the office at 6:30, so I wouldn't say it was short hours. And you could take 2 weeks vacation in one go (actually for investment banks, this is often mandatory to guard against what happened with Nick Leeson).
Oh that’s a crazy coincidence, my friend just started working at BoA in Tokyo 😂😂 thanks for the interesting insight! 6:30 is definitely not bad by japanese standards, especially for banking i imagine, although i personally would still like it a bit shorter 😝

I'm very interested to hear your opinion on the work environment in this company as you did mention the bad culture in the Japanese companies. I too I'm thinkg of searching for a job in Japan, but that work culture kind of makes me not wanting to do it. But hey, maybe there are companies that are different. Still, I'm on my way to getting an N2 and I'm fluent in English, but it seems to me there are way less openings for non English natives (I'm a native Spanish speaker). I'll give it a shot tho, it's not like I did studied Japanese to move to Japan or anything.
The work environment so far is really good!! No overtime, and everyone is extremely kind and open-minded. Usually 外資系 (foreign companies in Japan) tend to be more progressive thinking (but not all, like Storgan Manley 😝). Absolutely incredible you’re on your way to getting your N2!! And even if you’re not an English native, you’re English seems strong enough that you’d still be an attractive candidate in that sense - the average japanese person’s English ability is fairly low. Just keep up the awesome studying and be really diligent when doing research on companies’ cultures. Thanks for watching my video! 🥳

Congrats! Interview tip, though(not that you need it). If a company requires you to do a presentation as part of your interview process, walk away and keep applying elsewhere. You’re basically giving them free consultation because, I assure you, they will use some of your ideas and you will get $0.00 for your services.
Ahhhh that’s so true!! My eventual employer required a presentation, but it was on a more personal subject so it couldn’t be used for their benefit. But the Storgan Manley interview had one too on how they can improve an aspect of their work culture and i could totally see them ripping off the candidates’ ideas with nothing in return…. just poor ethics 😪
I'm glad that I got a job at a company with an international environment. We work from 9-5 but my lazy arse starts work at 10/11am and just finish late. I don't mind doing this since I still have time to hang out with my friend and boyfriend on days when I do decide to start work at 9am lol.
ahhhh yes, internationally influenced companies typically have reasonable hours, which is a big reason why i chose my company too 😝 glad to hear you’re still having a life outside of work! 😙

I have to apply to about a hundred different companies and EVERY application wants a resume & cover letter tailored to their company and position, getting 15 1st round and 6 2nd round responses is amazing
damnn, ive never job hunted outside of japanese companies so I don’t even know 😂😂 but writing cover letters in japanese when it’s your second language takes 17x longer 🥴👌 not bad but also probably less than average applicants i think! honestly just really glad to be done 😭
I'd totally be up for teaching english in Japan, unfortunately I am german and when I emailed the japanese embassy in Berlin about wether I could join the JET program with the appropriate english certificates anyway and they said that I could only apply as a teacher for german (which they haven't been looking for since 2018) because I am not native in english. So screw me I guess... :(
Wow that sucks since your English is really good. Are there any other language programs? Also could a C2 level certificate help? Being a native doesn't make anyone a good teacher. Good luck
Ahhhhh that’s too bad 😔 I’m really surprised they won’t let you teach English even with the right certificates, doesn’t seem fair. But I’ve talked to someone who worked in a language school in japan outside of JET (and they weren’t English native), so there are definitely alternatives out there !

try not Jet. there are other eikaiwa out there that don't require you to be a native speaker. otherwise how do you explain all of the Filipinos teaching English lol
It's even worse than that. Native English speakers from some countries are also not considered suitable to teach English, such as Ghana, Nigeria or India , to name a few. I wonder why...
