    *Fun fact:* because they filmed the whole season before airing the first episode, they had no idea whether the show would be renewed and so, they conclued the season in a way that could also serve as a series finale. Something that I find really interesting is that every single season finale after this one works the same way to varying degrees.

      Thus setting a template for many shows since to follow. Season finales were more commonly cliffhangers before this show. Since this show, they've often been conclusions of storylines. Babylon 5 is supposedly another show that pioneered season arcs, but I believe they were more like chapters in one long novel rather than novels in a series, which is more what this show did. Someone who has actually seen that show might have more perspective on that. I really should.

  • @schloodie1942

    I don't think the "I feel strong" means that she woke up with more powers, I think it is more about her overcoming her fears (callback to Nightmares). She was really scared to face the master and die (understandably) so after she died (because she did. She drowned and Xanders CPR brought her back) she was unafraid and that made her feel stronger than before. I mean earlier in a sense her fear was literally paralyzing her and afterwards it no longer effects her because she is unafraid.

      @willsofer3679 Před 2 lety +19

      I actually asked about this at a convention, since it was never clarified on-screen. Apparently it's because she accepted her destiny, and then by later dying, she "touched the essence of the Slayer". She was more in touch with her powers, than at any time previously. It was made clear that at least part of it was her being willing to make that sacrifice, finally, and not just touching the essence of the Slayer when she died, so you were definitely partly right. :)

    Xander takes a lot of shit from fans but I like him. He’s a 15 year old boy and that at times stands out. He makes mistakes, he has crushes on his friend, very 15 year old boy stuff. But in the end he has a good heart and wants to help and I find that admirable seeing that he doesn’t have any actual powers or anything. SMG, is amazing in this episode. The “I’m 16 I don’t want to die” scene hits every time.
    Buffy did die in the episode and was revived by the CPR. So the prophecy was fulfilled. Also Buffy in the pilot episode describes how you get changed into a vampire. It’s not just being hit by the vampire. The person being hit then has to drink the blood of the vampire. Buffy says, “it’s a whole big sucking thing”. So Buffy just being but by the master couldn’t have turned her.

      In truth, the main reason season 1 gets a bad rap with longtime fans is that the show just gets so much better, so longtime fans tend to look at season 1 through the lens of having seen the rest. Those who do that tend to forget that season 1 establishes the world and the characters, gives us moments to learn to love the characters, and cements BtVS as both a genre defining AND genre defying show.

      @@cirrustate8674 Very much agree. Reactors even like the "bad" episodes because they are perfectly placed in S1. There are a few episodes in future seasons that belong in S1 as well - but they are panned because the surrounding episodes are so much better..

    My prom we had the "table of doom"
    6 couples that planned for months to sit together. 1 couple was "just friends". She ended up leaving with someone other than the friend she came with. 1 couple broke up at the prom. The other four couples all broke up within two weeks before the prom but decided to still go as friends because they had been planning for so long and already put the money out. It was an awkward table we were sitting at😬🙄 at least the ones that broke up before the prom didn't hate each other at that point so we were able to still have some fun. But at the table it was definitely a weird vibe

    In terms of Buffy needing CPR or not, she did. The Master may have only 'slightly pushed her', but she fell face-first into water. Too weakened to even struggle, she technically drowned to death. (She did cough up water once coming back to life.)
    The vampire bite didn't turn Buffy. She talks about it in an earlier episode but in the Buffyverse, to turn someone into a vampire, a vampire has to suck someone's blood (basically to the point that they're /almost/ dead), and then the victim has to also drink the vampire's blood.

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan Před 2 lety +2

    The Master asking The Anointed One if its a 5.1 earthquake was a perfect delivery by Mark Metcalf.
    "There's six more seasons." They finished season one and filmed all of it before it aired with the intent that it might be the only season. It wasn't until the season was over (airing-wise) that they knew S2 was happening.
    The writers didn't want Buffy defeating The Master every week only to have him try another plan the next week, so the entire season they had him trapped and neither able to fight each other. The two times they do fight; The Master wins (temporarily, as Buffy is brought back with CPR), and then Buffy wins by staking him.
    The CPR was necessary. Her heart was stopped due to The Master drowning her. The prophecy never said she stayed dead, though. Ironically, if The Master had drained Buffy instead of drowning her, The Master would have won and Buffy would be permanently dead 🤣😁😀😃😄😁 Biting is not what changes someone in to a vampire. Draining their victim to the point of death and then the vampire feeding them their blood is how to make someone into a vampire on this show.
    The idea of Buffy being stronger is more about accepting her role as the slayer rather than added strength post resurrection.
    I have no problem with Xander asking Buffy out (although I definitely wouldn't be a fan if Buffy had been into the idea and said yes), but I have no problem with it. What bothers me is his reaction to Buffy after she says no ("I guess a guy's gotta be undead to make time with you") and to Willow, who has to put Xander in his place when he tries to use her while knowing how she feels about him ("You think I wanna go to the dance with you and watch you wish you were at the dance with her? You think that's my idea of hijinks? You should know better"). If he had done what he said he was going to do (and did) without insulting Buffy and attempting to use Willow, I would feel more sorry for him.

    She isn’t a vampire (i see you saw the next ep anyway) I think she feels stronger because she died and came back. That must be a powerful feeling. She faced everything she had to and realized the master needed her power from her blood (and he didn’t even drink all that much; he drowned her instead) and realizing that she probably wondered why should i fear him when he needed my power and now hes in her world, in the open at her school, in her comfort zones. I think facing her fears gave her the powerful feeling… ya know before she has time to think “damn I really died” and suffer ptsd, of course lol

    Prophecy Girl definitely the best episode of S1. Many who are new to the show complain about the special effects, but have to bear in mind this is 25yo show, and S1 did not have a massive budget, plus the writers were conscious of the fact they never knew if it would be recommissioned. Here you can really see the direction of the show changing, giving all the characters so far much more purpose. This incredible show just gets better and better, you will love S2. Some comic relief also, this show has the best one liners ever. The Master ' what do ya think, 5.1' and 'By the way I like your dress'. SMG'S acting is superb here. When she says 'I'm 16 years old I don't want to die' you really feel her anguish. Great enthusiastic reactions to S1, from mid season 2 onwards this show goes like a rollercoaster and never stops with some amazing episodes. S3 is just out of this world. Enjoy your journey guys.

    Mark 14:19. "Buffy" = "Blonde". The way that you said her name, I'm not sure how it is spelled, but it reminds me of, "Friends"! In that sitcom, Phoebe Buffay's identical twin sister, Ursula Pamela Buffay, pretends to be, Phoebe, when acting in erotica, so as not to spoil her own reputation. (She eventually does go into politics and becomes New York's governor!) One of her sex movies is titled, "Buffay The Vampire Layer"! 😂

    On the scene where buffy saying she didn't wanna die,. If I remember correctly, Joss Whedon has said that SMG's acting in that scene showed Joss that her acting range was much larger than he realised and it influenced the show being able to write some of the more heavy stuff that comes in later seasons knowing that SMG could deliver on performance.
    This is my favourite episode in season 1 and season 2 is essentially just all around better than season 1. Season 3 is often considered the best season, I love seasons 5 and 6 personally though.

      I remember that being debated in the newsgroups back in the day. I don't believe it is ever clarified, but best suggestion was Angel had no idea how to do CPR. But based on the limited vamp biology we get in BtVS and Angel it's possible that his breath would have a different composition than ours.

    Final finale notes? Once it aired and began getting an income, they do improve their production values. Season One, was done before the first episode was aired, so there was no input from the viewers, just the studio executives. Season Two, got to take advantage of viewer input.
    By the way, you never seemed to notice the set of hair colors. Blonde Buffy, Brunette Cordelia, & Ginger/Redhead Willow. As if inspired by the, "Bradley Sisters", in, "Petticoat Junction". SMG, is actually a Brunette, by the way. When the actresses eventually try to get away with changing their hair colors, and thus spoiling the collection set, they were told by the bosses to revert back to how they started, since that is what they paid for and expect! 🤔
    Edit: By the way! That "old printer" was new when the episode was made! 🙄

    "To make you a vampire they have to suck your blood. And then you have to suck their blood. It's like a whole big sucking thing. Mostly they're just gonna kill you."
    She didn't suck his blood, so she's not a vampire. But he did attack her, and she drowned, so she fulfilled her part of the prophecy. She just didn't have to stay dead, a twist which I love.
