Better parade hack for those who read this: Find where the floats "run out". At the end of the parades, the floats usually head to an area where everyone debarks. There is usually a route from the end of the parade to the debarking area. (for instance, Tchoupitoulas Street for many of the Canal Street parades) Set up there (chairs and whatnot), find a bar/restaurant where you can use a bathroom and either buy drinks or bring your own coolers (but you'll still have to buy drinks when you use the bathroom). You'll have to wait until the end of the parade, but once it's over, the people on the floats DO NOT want to lug any of the throws left on the float home (they are going to the afterparty!), so they will absolutely RAIN the remainder of their booty on anyone who even waves at them as the floats roll by at full speed to the debarking area.. I've had full cases of beads and all kinds of "premier" throws and trinkets thrown to me at this juncture. You'll miss the dance troops and the bands, since they usually break off in another direction, but if it's loot you want, loot you will get. Just be prepared to lug it all home (we bring a wagon).
