- A full 30-minute show set from Spring 1990 taped at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis as part of the River Blenders Sweet Adelines Show. All the songs were arranged by David Wright especially for Ambiance. Members of Ambiance: Shelly Sweet (tenor), Elizabeth (Liz) Hardcastle (Lead), Sandi Wright (Baritone), and Diane Huber (bass). The quartet won their international championship in 1986 and kept an ambitious concert schedule until the quartet retired in 1995. Songs include: Fat Waller's Ain't Misbehavin' Medley, It's a Sin To Tell A Lie, Keepin' Out of Mischief, Handful of Keys, and George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
What I wouldn’t give to hear Rhapsody live… I think it would change my life
The very best Quartet...ever!!!!
David Wright is a legend awesome arranger
"Rhapsody in Blue" is phenomenal!!!!!! Wow! I've never heard anything like it. David Wright's arrangement... the lyrics... the fantastic voices from these four incredibly talented ladies... just everything about this song is superb! Ambiance is definitely my favorite Sweet Adeline quartet of all time!
Chills. Chills! Rhapsody is perfection.
Thank you, Sarah
Gosh their Good!..That sound would Win now in 2022!
How much do I love this?! Ambiance would win international today!
We are so fortunate to have experienced these 4 incredible vocalists sing such fabulous music with so much life and ability.
Thank you, Liz, Sandi, Shelly, Diane, and David.
Ms Sweet nails it every time! Wish Mr. Gershwin could hear her...
Wonderful!
I'm absolutely floored! Wow. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is my all time favorite melody anyway, but this rendition is a whole new take on it. I could not have believed it was possible if I hadn't just heard it for myself. God bless you for posting it, and may it live forever!
I feel so fortunate to have experienced this amazing quartet live. This video is fantastic!
phenomenal....still...and always
Thank you for this wonderful video.
It was really good to meet this now.
Ambiance is definitely the best.
Unbelievable!!!
Incredible!!!
Amazing! Quality singing and incredible arrangements.
Thank you so much Sandi for sharing this!! The very first barbershop CD I had was the Ambiance - I Hear a Rhapsody album. I didn't speak English back then but I could sing along every song on that album. Ambiance will always remain my inspiration to become a quartet singer.
And Sandi, when we met a couple of years ago I had that album in my purse but I just didn't had the guts to ask you to sign it........
wow!!!!
THE BEST!
Oh, my, gosh... brilliant.
My favorite quartet! actually sparked my interest in barbershop. Thank you for this post!
My favorite quartet! Thank you for posting this!
Thank you for sharing!
Just as amazing to watch this now as when I saw them on my first chorus show in Sweet Adelines, some 26+ years ago! Thank you SO much for posting this! :-)
Pure awesomeness - my all-time favorite quartet. I watched you win international, it was what hooked me on Sweet Adelines for life!
(What two losers gave this a thumbs down?!?)
Thank You for posting this. That must have been wonderful to see this performance in person. Love Rhapsody in Blue.

I wish that all quartet recordings (yes, even modern day ones!) were like this. Maybe I'm crazy, but this type of recording quality is my favourite way to listen to barbershop. Modern recordings often just don't satisfy me the same way. I can't say exactly what it is, but I find that modern quartet recordings (particularly the live contest recordings and such) are way too "stripped down" for my tastes. I can hear the individual parts too clearly... maybe this isn't the exact best way to talk about it. Older recordings give me a much better sense of the wall of sound coming from the unit as a whole, give a better sense of the room. Also: I think the level of reverb used in this case is exactly right. I know some people can't stand reverb when it's really obvious but I think it gives the whole performance a nice extra vibe. The costuming is big and bold, and I wish (we men!) did more of that these days too. The guys are so conservative much of the time. Big, bold choices are so satisfying to watch and listen to. ALSO: Liz is hilarious, her jokes land really well. Ambiance really had a lot on offer.
By the way: Ambiance won the year I was born! I can't recall if SAI contests are in July, as with BHS... but if so, then they/you would've won the same month I was born too. Either way it's a neat thing for me.
Anyway this is a great set and I really enjoy the sound quality here, thank you for preserving this gem and sharing your quartet's performances.
Thanks for the comment. It was all we had all those years ago, and these VHS tapes have been in boxes in the closet. Some have weathered the years and others have not. Thanks for watching.
