  • In this episode Dr. Nader sits down with Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett for a fascinating conversation about feelings, emotions, and thoughts and the role they play in our lives. Does everyone experience happiness, sadness, and anxiety the same way? As we learn more about the brain we realize how mistaken we might have been about the mechanics of emotions. Can we eliminate the unhelpful patterns of feelings and emotions holding us back from living a fulfilling life?
Dr. Feldman Barrett is a neuroscientist, a University Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, and is among the top one percent most-cited scientists in the world for her revolutionary research in psychology and neuroscience. She is the author of the books 'Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain' and 'How Emotions are Made' and has published over 260 peer-reviewed, scientific papers.

Wonderful subject! I always love learning more about emotions and feelings. Also, I think is important to learn how to transmute emotions. Andrew Kenneth Fretwell in his book, Emotional Alchemy the Love and Freedom Hidden within Painful Feelings teaches how to do that. Here is a quote: “Emotional Alchemy allows us to turn pain into wisdom, fear into courage, and sadness into compassion.’’

Wonderful. So so great. One suggestion if possible is to have table of contents on the scroll toggle. Some videos have sections on the red scroll button. Would be so helpful in these videos where many complex concepts are touched upon 🙏🙏

trillions of cells organized into dozens of systems that all have to be
    5:14
coordinated with each other in a metabolically efficient way or will become sick and so that's really the brain's
    5:22
most important job and it's to keep things coordinated
there are special names that we give for the signals from the body versus our
    8:53
experience of those signals right so if you have tissue damage somewhere in your body
    8:58
the the signals that are being sent from your body to your brain are called no susceptive
    9:06
signals but those are not feelings of pain those are signals which
    9:13
you may experience as pain but you may not also experience and part
    9:18
of the experience of pain is the distress that you feel over that damage

Emotions shape and sculpt your salience landscaping such that an agent arena relationship becomes obvious and apparent to you.
When you are angry, you assume a particular role, and you assign a bunch of identitys and it's obvious to you what you should be doing.

But why does the body have a feeling? How does it effect the internal systems?

She explained all of that in the interview. It can be hard to grasp at first because it isn't intuitive.
I'd suggest watching other interviews she's done with Andrew Huberman, Lex Fridman, and maybe some others of your choice in addition to this one.
Each Dr or interviewer asks different questions so it's been easier for me to understand through multiple interviews. Maybe it'll help you too. :) have a good one.
