- 11 January 2014: Portlanders were joined by Weymouthians and visitors to clean up vast quantities of flotsam, jetsam and marine detritus washed up onto Chesil Beach after the two greatest storms of the 21st century. Gigantic storm waves changed the shape of the beach overnight, scouring away the normal 3-tier cross-section of the world-famous pebble bank into a single steep concave profile. The Enviroment Agency warned of a potential catastrophe with 'severe threats to life', but the sea defences held firm and there was no flooding in the village of Chiswell behind the bank at Chesil Cove. Local girl Storm Wallace was the main organiser, she was commended on ITV's Daybreak live TV show 10/3/2014
Stuart, you and I have witnessed over the years storms which have reshaped the beach, but the sea has always returned the three pebble tiers without the help and tremendous cost of machinery. Excellent footage and tremendous effort by all the volunteers.
A big thank you to the people of Portland, and beyond, for the fantastic work you are doing...I look forward to my usual summer visit to the most beautiful...and secret...place in the country. Sadly I can't get there to help as I live 300 miles away..
excellent video, can't imagine whats gonna be there after todays storm !
what beautiful rocks and landscape makes me want to go there to have a rest
gives me faith in the Great Mystery
I would love to live in Portland. If I could find a job there I'd move in a heartbeat.
Please also give credit to the many people from Weymouth and beyond who responded to the radio news item and spent hours cleaning the beach. Some were visitors and some were day trippers.
Nice video Stuart. Looking good down there. 🏄🎣
