    I was a traditional singer songwriter type musician who found ableton and it unlocked a deeper creative world I had been looking for. Mixing has been my greatest challenge. These videos are helping me achieve my ideas and given me the confidence to tackle things I may not have tried to approach before. For real thank you for working so hard on this. I’ll be taking your courses 💪💪💪

    Yet another brilliant video for any level of producer. I thought 'yeah I will maybe learn something at level 8' because I've been producing, mixing and mastering for 30 plus years. Let me tell you, I learned things well before level 8. Great work, Alice. Again! edit: one of the most important things you say here , which is insaney important and lots of people will ignore: LISTEN to it. Don't keep making changes just because it looks better on a visual EQ. LISTEN.

    Alice thank you for your long lasting quality in the content you upload I've been watching for over two years now and I get a lot of value in each of your videos.
    Just one constructive critique if you allow me.
    In this particular video I had to boost up the volume to hear proper details in the low end (I use open beyer dynamic headphones)
    But because of raising the volume, the voice high pitched accents turned out to be too high for me and in occasions quite harsh for the ear.
    You must know better than I do, but I think that it should be easy to fix this with a "de-esser" in the voice channel.
    Anyway thanks for the vid . great content like always.

    A question I have, when you set your kick around -7db and your bass around -12db, what level in decibel do you target for the overall mix ? (-6db, 0db, other?)

    • @AKAtAGG
      @AKAtAGG Před 2 lety

      your overall mix should never be higher than -6db - this is because it leaves those six decibels for the mastering engineer (me!) and makes my job much easier. If you are mixing it yourself and mastering it yourself, there are no hard and fast rules on this, but i would always recommend leaving some room for the mastering.

    • @Arthur-he3gy
      @Arthur-he3gy Před 2 lety

      @@AKAtAGG thank you sticky. Yes but since it's all digital nowadays, (I think) I could also target -1db, make sure it doesn't clip, then use a gain reduction to target the level asked by the mastering engineer.
      My question was more related to mixing and levels in techno. The relation between the different elements in loudness. But I had the answer and it's around -6db ;)

  • @keflat23
    @keflat23 Před 2 lety

    0:50 its a good thing to use utility and get down the volume and not from the direct volume of the channel. Thats because the direct volume of the channel its not accurate and sometimes for example you get down -4db and if you check with a utility you will see that its not 4db that it brought down.

  • @Dekkie61
    @Dekkie61 Před 2 lety +2

    Very useful, but I've got a bit of a question on the group processing: I am used to Glue Compressing all my drums in a drumbuss. If you make a Kick & Bass group, would you also do group compression on the rest of the drums, and if so, how: are there 2 groups in parallel (1= kick&bass, 2= all other drums), or is the kick&bass group a subgroup of the entire drumbuss, or is there another option I am not seeing?

  • @FireyDeath4
    @FireyDeath4 Před rokem

    I just watched a lot of CZcams videos I wasn't really comprehending. Maybe I'm just tired, and will have to look at them all over again tomorrow :P
    That's a LOT of attention to detail... Should I just focus on arranging the music first? I mean, last time I made a substantial piece, it got so cluttered that I didn't know where to start balancing it other than making the quiet tracks louder, resulting in escalation making everything progressively louder. Honestly, I didn't really plan out what I was doing, and I have no idea where I went wrong or how I can get a good idea of what the EQ looks like so I can manage it. Every time I get into a DAW, it's like I'm just doing literally everything by the seat of my pants and I am just horrible at it. I can't have a musical idea for 10 seconds without listening to the trash I make and completely forgetting how it was supposed to sound, and all the instruments on there suck. But anyway, yeah, I should probably stop being self-taught because I clearly have SO MUCH to learn. This one is about mastering, right? Sigh... I'm about to take so long just to know what I'm doing so I can properly think about mastering stuff
